One Sweater Dress, Three Ways #FashionFriday

Welcome back to 25 Days of Winter Fashion! Cyndi of Grace+Beauty and I have teamed up to bring you 25 winter outfits, and today is Day 8.

3 Trendy Ways to Wear a Sweater Dress for 2015

Sweater dresses are super popular this fall and winter, and I love this wearable trend. When I saw this grey Cozystitch Sweater Dress on sale at the LOFT a few weeks ago, I snapped it up. Today it is $25 off, bringing it down to $64.50.

What I love about a sweater dress is that you can wear it by itself with boots or pumps and a key accessory such as a scarf or a statement necklace, or you can layer it up with a poncho, a fur vest, or a leather jacket.

To illustrate my point, I styled this dress three different ways.

3 Ways To Wear A Sweater Dress

First I put on my sweater dress with black tights, black wedge knee-high boots, and I added a necklace and bracelets. I’d wear this to church or to lunch with friends. (Yes, it’s that necklace again!)

By the way, the tights I’m wearing are by Spanx, and I swear by them. They are the only tights I wear.

Then I decided to take it up a notch with this black faux shearling vest from White House Black Market. I switched out the purse for this fun teal clutch that came from LeTote, and I also changed out my bracelets.

This shearling vest is a bit spendy (I nabbed it when I had a 25% off coupon) but the quality is outstanding. I’ve ordered several shearling vests in my search for the perfect one, and this is by far the nicest I’ve tried. That said, I returned it because $$$. And there’s something about the black fur that I feel is harsh and aging.

I’m on the hunt for a more casual version that’s more affordable but fits as well as this one. I don’t think I’ve found it just yet, although I have a grey and cream one in my closet that I’m going to style next week. That said, if your budget allows, this is a fabulous piece to have. It would be just as nice dressed down with a long-sleeve tee and jeans.

Another fun way to wear a sweater dress is to add a poncho or blanket scarf to the outfit. This is the Bonfire Poncho from LOFT.

  1. I love that dress! I’ve been really into dresses this winter, which isn’t my norm, but I’ve been enjoying the new look. I love all three styling options, but I especially like the vest ensemble. And that teal tote!! Love!

  2. I like everything about that sweater dress Jo-Lynne. I can’t say which way I like it best. Question: Does the sweater dress ride up or cling to the tights when you walk? I actually looked at the Spanx tights at Kohl’s, but did not purchase them. Next time, I will!

    Have a blessed day!

    1. Hey Ginger, no, it stays put pretty well. I do feel like it shows lumps and bumps, though, so I prefer it with a layer over it – jacket, poncho, vest, anything. This was the only shot of it by itself that I was willing to post. The rest looked lumpy. 😉

      1. Thanks Jo-Lynne! I think I’ll refrain from buying a sweater dress since I definitely don’t like lumps or bumps showing either.

  3. Thanks for showing us some options! I love seeing different ways to wear the same thing–totally extends my wardrobe! Gotta love that! I like the dress by itself (I would add a scarf, probably) and with the vest the best. The poncho style looks good on you but I know I would feel super bulky in it. I think the jean jacket option would be cute too.

  4. I love a sweater dress – I wear a dress to work everyday !! And in the winter I am always looking for cute sweater dresses – I love the one you styled I will certainly have to try it on when I am at the mall next. I will have to give the Spanx tights a try – I typically wear the HUE luster tights because they do not stick to any of my dresses. I noticed someone else asked if the Spanx tights stick to your dresses – do you find that they do ?

I think my favorite look you did is with the vest (bummer you had to return it, but for that price you need to be 100% happy). I think my other favorite look would be the one you didn’t post – with the jean jacket. On “jeans day” at work I typically will wear a jean jacket with one of sweater dresses — it’s the cutest look ! Thanks for sharing.

  5. I LOOOOVE this sweater dress! I think I might have to get it in the deep ruby color. And I have the perfect leopard waist belt to go with it! I really like the different ways you styled it! 🙂

  6. That’s a great dress! I love all of the styles, but especially the one with the vest. I hope you find a vest that you completely love. Whenever I hesitate about an item, I let it go. We need to be happy in our clothes (and have peace of mind about the cost).

  7. All three looks are great! I have never even thought about wearing a vest with a dress but that is a great look. Thanks for sharing! ???? I also like the shirttail hem line of that dress. The little details mean the most. ????????

  8. I am actually wearing this dress today in the camel shade. It’s a trial run to see if it might work for Thanksgiving. If my light lunch doesn’t produce a “food baby” that causes this dress to cling to unflattering body parts then it’s a GO! I love how you styled it and I am wearing it today in a similar to your basic way with heeled boots and a long pendant necklace. I wanted to try a blanket scarf with it but the heat tends to be on the warm side in the office and I was afraid of being uncomfortable. Also going to try it with my leopard print heeled booties.
