Things To Do With Kids in Cape May

things to do with kids in cape may

A few weeks ago, we enjoyed a short family vacation in Cape May, New Jersey. Cape May is one of the prettiest towns on the Jersey shore, and it’s definitely one of the quieter beaches. Many families like to stay in Ocean City or Avalon, but I’m quite fond of the Victorian charm you can only find in Cape May.

You can rent a house, stay in a hotel or even camp nearby. There’s a travel accommodation for nearly every budget. We camped in Cape May many years ago, before we had kids, and that worked out well. There are several campgrounds to choose from.

On our most recent trip, we stayed at The Beach Shack. You can see my thoughts about those accommodations in my post Summer Vacation in Cape May.

In this post I want to continue my Things To Do With Kids series and share the fun things that Cape May has available for kids and families. We haven’t done everything on this list, but all of these activities come highly recommended.

Things To Do With Kids in Cape May, New Jersey

1. At the risk of stating the obvious, go to the beach. The beach at Cape May is lovely, and it’s usually not too terribly crowded, even in the height of the summer season. Incidentally, Cape May is a great place to visit in the off-season as well. You will have to purchase beach tags. You can see the current rates at CapeMay.com.

2. Rent a bike or surrey and tour the town on wheels. Surreys and bikes are everywhere in Cape May. What a fun way to get around!

3. Movies on the Beach is a popular attraction for families with kids and a great way to spend an evening, and they’re FREE!

4. If it’s your thing, there are several Ghost Tours that take you around to some of Cape May’s gorgeous historic homes.

5. Visit the Cape May County Zoo. This is on our bucket list. We didn’t get there the last time we visited Cape May, but everyone raves about this zoo. Trip Advisor ranks this as the #1 attraction in Cape May and the attraction gets a 5-star review from Trip Advisor users. And it is also FREE!

6. Visit the downtown shops. There is something for everyone on your gift list in this collection of shops. Be sure not to miss the Original Fudge Shop and the ice cream shop on the corner by the pizza joint. (I can’t find the name online.)

7. Go on a Dolphin Watch. This looks like a blast. I hope to do this next time we go to Cape May.

8. Rent jetskis, waverunners, or kayaks. Find all this information on CapeMay.com.

9. For dinner one night, be sure to visit The Rusty Nail, a family friendly surfer bar and restaurant owned by Cape Resorts Group and situated beside The Beach Shack, a popular Cape May hotel for families. There is always live music, a bonfire and plenty of kids and families hanging out  around the sandpit and soaking up the atmosphere. Kids’ meals are served on a souvenir Beach Shack Frisbee, giving you a fun after-dinner activity.

10. Finally, you do not want to miss the Cape May Lighthouse. Climb to the top for a picturesque view of the ocean, bay and countryside and check out their Family Fun Days for kid-friendly activities and entertainment.

  1. The ice cream shop is Uncle Charlie’s. My best friend and I are there (at least) once a day on our annual trip to Cape May with a bunch of her female family members. My fave is white chocolate raspberry truffle. I was just thinking about Uncle Charlie’s yesterday, acknowledging that we’re going to have to seriously cut down on our ice cream outings this year since we’re both struggling to lose weight and trying to eat better. It may really have a negative impact on Uncle Charlie’s profits for the summer season. 😉

    1. No way! It is so fun. Tell him to hang out at The Rusty Nail. 🙂 I mean, it’s not like the boardwalk. It is a slower pace, so maybe not for everyone. But it’s totally my bag. 🙂

  2. My son enlisted in the Coast Guard and leaves for bootcamp in June – he’ll be at Cape May! I was curious about the area as we’ll go there when he graduates in August. Thanks for the post!
