Summer Date Night Outfit with Gathered Halter Top

Hello, hello! Somehow it is Wednesday already AND the last day of May. It hardly seems possible.

Today I’ve got a summer date night outfit that is more practical than the off-the-shoulder dress I styled yesterday. In fact, if you swap the heels for flat sandals, this can easily be an everyday look as well.

I discovered this top when I was at the mall, and I wasn’t sure I liked the way it fit when I tried it on in the dressing room, but I love the halter style so I bought it. It’s very lightweight and comfortable to wear, although it does require a strapless bra.

You will definitely want to size down if you purchase this top; I’m wearing the small.

I decided to wear jeans and heels to offset the length of the top and also because I wanted to dress it up a bit for more of a date night look. I think flat sandals could work, but I may front tuck it when I wear it that way.

It’s always my natural inclination to wear white jeans in the summertime, but this shade of rust-red works every bit as well with black jeans, and I like wearing them in the spring and summer for a change. These jeans are discontinued because I bought them on an end-of-season sale, but these are similar and on sale. Whoop!

This pair has quite a lot of distressing, but of course you could wear whatever black jeans you have in your closet with a top like this. I carried a grey leather clutch that I’ve had for years that just so happens to coordinate perfectly with these shoes!

Speaking of the shoes, these are sooo comfortable, especially for heels. I can walk in them all day (and I have!) I just make sure to double-knot them when I know I’ll be doing a lot of walking so they don’t come untied. (I can’t remember the name of the polish on my toenails; so sorry!)

A necklace didn’t really work on this top so I went for a pair of bold earrings instead. These came from Fair Trade Friday, which is a wonderful organization run by Kristin Welch.

I wore my Alex and Ani bangles because the copper color works well with these earrings, but I wish I’d worn a bigger stack to make more of a statement. I just grabbed a few out of habit.

On one hand this outfit is really basic, but on the other hand I love how the fun cut of the top, the texture from the distressed jeans, and the geometric cut-outs on the block heel lace-up sandals work together to give it an edgy vibe that is still practical for everyday wear.

  1. Cute outfit but I tend to shy away from tops that accentuate the girls and this top certainly does that. Not sure if it’s the pleats or the way it drapes? But it would do the same on me, so it’s a no ????

      1. I have to say, I don’t love this outfit. The ripped jeans….I just don’t like them. I know that everyone has their opinions about them! I’m not well endowed and I stay away from tops like this for that very reason. I don’t like how the material drapes down the middle of the chest with a rounded neckline and pleats. Love the color combo, shoes and accessories, though! Thanks your daily posts. I always look forward them!

  2. That color looks great on you, especially with the sunshine! Missed your weather report today, LOL! We woke up to a downpour, but by the time the grandkids got here to wait for the bus, it stopped & our sun has popped out!! Although my days of halters & sleeveless tops have passed me by, I always re-imagine your style & color combo’s by using what works for me. With all the rain we’ve been having, I’ve stayed away from my white jeans (I hate dirty water splatters up the back of my jeans) so it’s been dark denim lately. Come on summer!

    1. I started out writing about the weather and deleted it. LOL! At this point, I am most definitely complaining and I didn’t want to sound negative. The sun is supposed to shine this afternoon, and for a few days, but then we are looking at more rain next week. I heard somewhere that this is going to be a cool, wet summer — was it you? Anyway, I am resigned to it at this point, but between that and the dizziness, I’m starting to get depressed. I think if I can get back to running, I’ll be able to deal better with the crappy weather. I am ready to move to Arizona. Who is with me?

  3. I bought a sleeveless top in the same color recently and I like the idea of wearing it with black jeans. 🙂

  4. Love the outfit! And so glad you are wearing your Fair trade Friday earrings. I love Kristen’s mission and Been in her bracelet club for the past few months!

  5. You look great Jo-Lynne. Love the black jeans, actually the whole ensemble look super cute!! Thank you.!

  6. Well, I am here in sunny California. It is not sunny today. Up here in the Sierra Nevada range we have clouds and breeze. It is actually pretty outside and we have a great view of a meadow. Your outfit is great, I really liked shirt pants shoes and jewelry that gave and edgy look. Have a great day and may your dizzy go away soon. K
