Spring Clean Your Beauty Routine

spring clean beauty

Despite the freezing temperatures this morning, spring has indeed sprung, and it is time to update your skincare and makeup for spring!

In the wintertime we tend to need heavier products, but when warm weather approaches, you might find that your current skincare products are too rich. If your face is starting to feel greasy around mid-day or you notice clogged pores, you probably need to look for a lighter moisturizer.

Springtime is also a great time to take inventory of your skin and look into any spa procedures that might be overdue. I, for one, am positively giddy about the spring facial I’ve scheduled for next week. I need it desperately.

Here’s a list of Spring Cleaning Tasks for your skincare and beauty cabinet:

1. Clean Out Your Makeup Drawer

This is a great time to go through your makeup drawer or bag and clean house. Throw away anything that is over 12 months old. Mascara really should be tossed after 3 months. I will keep powder and foundation from one year to the next, but I try to purchase products in squeezable tubes rather than tubs that i’m constantly dipping my hands into.

2. Wash Your Makeup Brushes

You should do this at least once a month. D’oh! I know, it’s hard to remember. But if you haven’t cleaned your makeup brushes in a while, now is a great time to do it. Your makeup brushes can harbor bacteria and it’s very important to your skin health to keep them clean. You can purchase a cleaner specifically for makeup brushes, or just clean them with a mild soap and water. Reshape and lay out on a towel to dry.

3. Trade in your heavy winter foundation for a tinted moisturizer or mineral powder.

You may want a lighter coverage in the summertime, and a tinted moisturizer is the perfect solution. During these in-between months, when you haven’t developed your summer tan, I like to continue to use my winter foundation (the lighter shade) and use my summer powder (a darker shade) on top. Eventually I will switch to a tinted moisturizer that is a shade darker than my foundation to take into account my summer tan. Even though I use sunscreen on my face, I like to go a shade darker for my foundation so my face matches my body.

4. Switch to summer skincare products.

Trade your creamy cleanser for a gel or water based cleanser, and switch out your rich moisturizers and creams for lighter-weight ones. If you have the time and budget, make an appointment at your favorite beauty counter to get professional advice on what products are best for your skin. Our skin does change as we age so it’s a good idea to re-evaluate based on your current needs.

5. Schedule a facial.

Over the winter, we tend to neglect our skin while we hibernate inside with the dry heat blasting. I know that my skin is feeling really rough lately. A professional facial is a great way to slough off the old dead skin and get your skin in tip top shape for summer. Consult your aesthetician and consider spa treatments that might be beneficial, depending on your skincare needs.

6. Up your water intake and watch your diet.

It’s always a good idea to drink lots of water, but especially when it starts to get warm outside because the heat can be dehydrating. If it helps, add fresh fruit to you water to make it more palatable. Limit alcohol and caffeine. Also be sure that you’re not overdoing it with the processed foods, which can take a toll on your skin. And no matter what time of year, be sure you’re getting adequate Omega 3s. You can take them in the form of fermented cod liver oil capsules if you don’t get enough in your diet.

I just switch from a thick foundation to a CC cream and I’m much happier!

  2. I so need to do this. I honestly am not sure I’ve cleaned my makeup out since the 1990s. Ok, well maybe once or twice but it sure feels like it’s been since then. Great tips!

  3. I simply did this a day or two ago. Truly tossed out such a great amount of make-up that was much excessively old. I additionally attempt to clean my brushes consistently. Extraordinary tips!
