Sleeveless Cowlneck Sweater + Bootcut Jeans

Greetings, friends. Happy FRIYAY! Who has fun plans this weekend? I hope those of you in Florida are playing it safe. Irma sounds like one angry woman.

I’ve got another casual outfit today with bootcut jeans and a sleeveless cowl neck sweater.

Fall Fashion for Women Over 40: Sleeveless Cowl Neck Sweater + Bootcut Jeans with Block Heel Sandals

I know, I know, jeans again. I really intended to have more variety in my outfits for this series, but I ordered about 5 dresses from Old Navy over a week ago, and I just got an email saying that my entire order was canceled. I am beyond baffled. That has never happened to me before. I mean, okay, maybe one, but all five? Weird.

And I know that some of you want to see more work wear looks with pants, and I’ll try to do one or two, but work wear really isn’t my jam. At least today’s jeans are bootcut, right!?! #workwithme

I don’t really know why, but I love a sleeveless cowl neck sweater. I always seem to end up buying one or two every fall, and it’s always a bonus when the color is as pretty as this one. I’m not even sure what to call this color. It’s not really red, but it’s not pink either. It actually has just a hint of rust going on, but all I know is, it’s a gorgeous shade for fall — or any time, really.

How to wear a sleeveless cowl neck sweater for fall

Don’t hate me, but I found this top at the LOFT Outlet so it’s not online. Normally I don’t buy things I can’t link to, but maybe that’s silly. I would buy a lot more at the outlets if they were online! That’s one reason I love J.Crew Factory… but that’s a post for another day. Like probably tomorrow.

Anyway. A couple weeks ago, I was invited along with a small group of local mom bloggers to the Philadelphia Premium Outlets to shop for fall and back to school. I hadn’t been there in a while so I was excited to see what’s new. They’ve moved some of the stores around, and I’m pretty sure I heard angels singing when I saw that a Tory Burch store is going in soonl!

I scored quite a few new pieces for fall, including this cowl neck sweater for $32. If you have a LOFT Outlet near you, go hunt it down right now! You’ll want to size down, though. I’m wearing an XS, and I almost never wear an XS, but the small was too long on me and the armholes were indecent. If you’re taller than my 5’5″ then you may be able to wear your regular LOFT size.

It’s split on the side, and the back is longer than the front, which I like. There’s also a really pretty knit detail on the back of the cowl, which is a nice feature if you have shorter hair — mine pretty much covers it, though.

I’ve already worn this sweater with black jeans, and it’s pretty with my grey jeans too, but a lot of you like to see outfit ideas with bootcut jeans so that’s how I styled it for this post.

I actually think it works well with the bootcut jeans because the sweater is a little too long for me so the bootcut jeans elongate the line of the leg and balance out the overall proportion of the outfit. These have a 33″ inseam, and my skinny jeans are 28″ or 29″. If you’re taller and need a longer length, this pair has a 36″ inseam.

I really love the fit and feel of these Seven For All Mankind Kimmie bootcut jeans, and they’re the perfect mid-wash to go with almost anything. They run TTS (true to size) but if you’re in between sizes, go with the smaller. For reference, I have the 28.

I could wear booties with this, or even pumps, depending on where I’m going, but I decided to wear these Lucky Brand block heel sandals. This brindle color is kind of a taupe/grey color, which works well into fall, and I like the ghille lace-up style and the cut out details.

I put away a lot of my sandals already, but I kept these out for our warmer fall days. As much as I love ankle boots for fall, I don’t want to wear them every day, so block heel sandals like these are a nice for a change.

I carried a crossbody bag that coordinates with my shoes and accessories. I recently ordered this R Minkoff Love Crossbody for 33% off on her summer clearance sale, and I know I’m going to get a lot of use out of it. I like her Love crossbody collection because they look like Channel but at a fraction of the cost.

Mine is the regular size, which is perfect for holding my wallet and iPhone and a few other essentials like tissues and lipstick, and this mushroom color is super versatile.

Unfortunately my exact bag is discontinued, but this small size is available on Amazon in the same mushroom color with gold hardware, and the newest Love crossbody style for fall comes in a pretty embossed nubuck. There’s also a grey leather version with gunmetal hardware.

I kept my jewelry pretty simple with a pair of gold beaded drop earrings and a couple of gold bangles.

  1. These jeans look great on you! It’s hard to beat a classic boot cut in my opinion. And you can never have too many jeans right?! So strange about your order being cancelled!

  2. Love this look!
It’s so awesome to get inspiration on how to style my jeans without looking like my teenage daughters. I like looking “hip” and fun, but not too young. The cowl neck sweater and those sandals are fun and more grown up, in my opinion. Thanks!!!

  3. Happy Friday! So sorry about your order being canceled. Both my daughter and I were waiting on packages that were delayed in Houston. We finally got them all in yesterday. I understand shipping delays but to just cancel an entire order is odd? Okay, love this outfit but since I’m petite, I can’t pull off the cowl neck. It’s just too bulky for my short neck lol….but boy does it look great on you. We have an outlet mall about 30 miles away and try to hit it every few months. We make a girls trip out of it and stay for the day. And yes we love the TB outlet! I got some TB sunglasses last time we went for 75% off (score). That was a fun day but other times we find nothing so it’s hit or miss, as some of the outlet prices are not much better than the regular stores. I just ordered a Rebecca Minkoff backpack purse for my daughter and it was on sale. She also has that exact same purse you posted in a grey/sliver matalic and she gets so many compliments on it. And also said the same thing you did, about it looking like a Channel bag so it makes her feel good!  Thanks for the Amazon tip, maybe it’s time for mom to get a Rebecca Minkoff too ????

  4. Love this outfit! Great color sweater on you, pretty lady. FYI Same thing happened to me with Old Navy & Banana Republic over Christmas All I got was email saying order was cancelled. Apparently they have increased their online security, so if you use a different Credit Card from previous orders, they just cancel your order. SAY WHAT? After a lengthy call, my order was re-instated and they did honor the price(on sale,of course)

  5. Love the post today!! I love my skinny jeans but it’s nice to see other options that are in right now as well.I might have missed it but what’s the name of your current nail color?

  6. Love this post because it is so versatile! This sweater or any sweater in this bright hue would look great with any kind of pant… black dress pants would look nice too for work!! Love this post

  7. Happy Friday Jolynne,
The out fit looks great, a nice transition to cooler weather. I am a little jealous- the cowl neck looks nice on you but I actually pulled them all from my wardrobe! I feel so overwhelmed in them (short neck? Square face?) plus they weren’t even on my sorta like list never mind my love list. I have the boot cut jeans on my “have to buy” list.  Do so love my skinnies but something about a dark wash boot cut brings an outfit up a notch.
Btw, The photo shoots are terrific, very professional

  8. You look fantastic in that red, or whatever color it is!! Ha. And I love that you style your jeans so many different ways. Jeans and anything is my cup of tea, even though I style other things on my blog, my fall back is always jeans! So thanks for showing so many different styles with our favorite, comfy pieces! Have a great weekend. – Amy

  9. Very pretty cowl neck, I also love turtlenecks that are sleeveless
We have a Tory Burch store at our Rehoboth Beach outlets now! Yay!

(Siri changed my typing to Story Butch-get with it Siri!)

  10. I love a sleeveless cowl neck too, but don’t actually own any. I should check the outlets. We live 3 miles from the San Francisco Premium outlets so I just run over there all the time. I wish more outlets were online too. That’d be great. We’ve got a TB outlet that opened last year, but I never really find anything I want in it. Seems the TB and the KS outlets have kinda the same things all the time, but I do love getting fun gifts at the KS outlet for a steal! Have a great weekend Jo-Lynne!

  11. Hi I notice when you wear bright colors it really makes you come alive in pictures as well as when you wear higher contrast prints. So extra photogenic today!! Love your blog!

  12. You are killing me with all the cute sweaters. This is one of my favorite styles: a sleeveless sweater! It is such a pretty color too! Sorry to hear about Old Navy. I never ordered online from them, but it must be disappointing to not get any of your order.

    1. Well, it was odd, for sure. I can’t really complain b/c there are so many people dealing with serious stuff. 🙂 Maybe it’s a sign I need to get out of my house and shop at the mall and not online. Ha!

  13. Oh and one more thing Miss Jolynne, our Loft Outlet is holding this sweater and the cream colored one for me.  I think you need the cream one as well!  Heehee!

  14. Yes I love the outlets.. when we go over from Canada we make sure we hit a few, and yes it’s hit or miss. Sometimes I make out great at the malls and not so great at the outlets or vise versa. In November we got 70% off Kate Spade plus a student discount of 15% can’t go wrong with that. Planning a trip in October can’t wait will be doing some Christmas shopping????Never too early to start. I’ve been to the rehoboth beach outlets years ago… great day . Have a great weekend.

  15. These boot cut jeans look great on you. They elongate the leg. I love your sweater, too. Both the style and color. It’s a great transition look for fall when the temps are still up there.
I’ve never had great luck at outlet malls so I stopped going. You lucked out though. ????

  16. I still struggle with when to wear these, but they are definitely favorites. I have two from last year’s Nsale and added one in light pink this year. I love the color of yours for fall. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any in actual fall colors anywhere before.

I am two hours from the closest outlet mall, so I don’t get over there often. It would be so convenient to have more online options! Although, other than J. Crew Factory and surprise.kate spade, I have not had luck with online factory stores. Sizing/quality is so off at Gap and BR factory, I gave up.

  17. I love the sleeveless sweater look too. I bought the same top at the Loft outlet. It is a great casual top and a great deal. I don’t understand why they make the sleeve hole so wide.

  18. This outfit looks fabulous, Jo-Lynne! Thanks for reminding me that I should wear my boot cut jeans more often…and to drag out my sleeveless sweaters which are perfect for this time of year.

  19. I wish I read this post weeks ago when I was near our Loft Outlet lol! I really love this outfit on you and think I will have to branch out and try a sleeveless sweater next time I go shopping.
