Ruffle Cardigan + Black Skinny Jeans

Hello, friends! Happy Monday! I have a new outfit post for you today! I’m also co-hosting the weekly linkup over at Pink Sole, so if you have a fashion blog, I hope you’ll share your style with us at the end of this post.

I’m not big on ruffles generally. I mean, I get the appeal — they’re feminine and flirty — but I usually feel fussy wearing ruffles. Yet for some reason, this ruffle-front cardigan at White House Black Market caught my eye. I love the way it drapes slightly longer in the front, and it’s the perfect muted berry color that is appropriate for now but will also carry me well into spring.

I originally styled this outfit as a work wear look with my LOFT scuba pants, but the loose cardigan and the loose cami on top of the pants that are slim but not snug just made the overall look a bit sloppy, so I changed into black skinny jeans. I’m much happier with this look.

Style Tip: Generally, when there is volume in one half of your outfit, you want the other half to be more snug so you don’t lose all of your shape.

I’ve been asked a few times by people taking the Adore Your Wardrobe course what body type I am. I am “short-waisted curvy.” In AYW language, curvy refers to body type, not weight.

I’ve known my whole life that I’m short-waisted, however, I had no idea that I had the hourglass body type. I always thought I was an apple or a carrot (inverted triangle.) It’s been incredibly eye-opening to have a more accurate view of my body and then to learn how to dress to accentuate those assets. It’s exciting to hear from those of you taking the course. So far everyone seems to love it. YAY!

So back to today’s outfit! This is my Topshop Double V-Back Camisole, and I love it under cardigans as an alternative to a tank or tee for a dressier look. It appears to be selling out, but this is similar. I was in between sizes, so I got the 8 and had it altered a bit.

I’m wearing black Frame skinnies. These have a fantastic fit and feel, and I like the 29″ inseam and 10″ leg opening — same as the DL1961 Emma. That’s my sweet spot with skinny jeans.

Once you learn your ideal inseam and leg opening, it makes finding jeans that fit great so much easier. I always compare those numbers before ordering. If you have a pair of jeans you love, measure them so you know what to look for when you shop.

I carried my R Minkoff Mini Perry Satchel. I included this in my best buys of 2016 even though I purchased it at the very end of the year, and it hasn’t proven itself just yet. It’s definitely becoming one of my go-to handbags for its perfect size and structure.

For accessories, I just wore simple faux pearl earrings and a long pendant. I can’t find a pendant to link to that’s similar to this. It’s from White House Black Market, but it was discontinued a few months ago. I like that it’s extra long and lightweight. It helps elongates the upper body and keeps the overall look in proportion. I probably should have added another delicate necklace in the neckline to help fill in and add some visual interest. I love layered necklaces, but I tend to wear the ones that come already put together. It takes the guesswork out of layering.

This is the perfect outfit to wear out to eat with friends, and I expect it would work for some office settings. You can always swap out the jeans for ponte knit pants or another slim-fitting pant. I can also see myself wearing this to church. For a more casual look, I’m going to try pairing the cardigan with a white tee, blue jeans, and ballet flats.

  1. I was never a ruffle girl growing up either. I always wondered if it was because my mom was—so I was basically rebelling?
But now I think it’s fine to be feminine and embrace those details like ruffles and lace!
I can see why you liked this cardigan, Jo-Lynne. I think the color is great on you too besides the length & style!!

  2. Good Morning Jo-Lynne! I hope it’s still quiet there. I’m enjoying coffee while I read my devotions for the day, and am now seeing what you have for us today. Thank you so much for the style tip! If it isn’t a lot of extra work for you, I’d love for you to do that more often. I am a visual person, so reading the tip while looking at the example is very helpful. The long sweater from BWM is so pretty on you, in the color and style.

    Make it a great day!

  3. What a stunning outfit! That cardigan really spoke to me! LOL! But I’m still on my “no spend January” kick. So far, so good….but I did look up the cardigan on the website & it’s not available in XL so for sure I can’t buy it! I do have other elements of the outfit in my closet, but that cardigan really made the outfit pop! Love you OOTD inspiration! Happy Monday!

  4. I am another follower taking the ADY course. Love it! I was shocked to find out I am a short waisted hour glass! I have been following your blog for a bit & always like how you style things. Now I am going to copy your ideas more.! Makes life so much easier. Thank you.
I LOVED the red lace dress on you, but agree that a v-neck & 3/4 length sleeves would have been better. I found a Tadashi Shoji in a navy lace with more of a boat/open neck style & three quarter sleeves at Nordy’s Rack yesterday. I snapped it up pronto without even trying on. How does it look ~ amazing. Hubby said, “Wear that a lot.” I never would have done that without having an idea on how it looked on you. Also I love lace, not so big on ruffles or florals. But the ruffled sweater is a winner for you.

  5. I have two of this type of sweater in my wardrobe and I was looking at them yesterday wondering if they were even still in style. I’m glad to see you wearing one today, and that they are still selling them, now I know, ‘Yes they are still in style!”. I love how you styled yours. Beautiful look.

  6. This sweater is lovely on you. I can definitely see it in spring as a topper….also looks like one that could be slipped on when air conditioners get a bit chilly. The drape is great on this- doesn’t add the visual weight we learned to avoid in AYW!
I look forward to your posts each day with my coffee!

  7. Hi Jo Lynne,
This post is very informative. I really appreciate the way you explain in detail what works together and why, instead of just showing how cute it is. I learn so much more from you when you explain outfits this way and it is so helpful. Thank you!!

  8. Hi Jo-Lynne, I’m ready to take the plunge in buying premium denim…you have convinced me! I’ve checked your “shop my favorites” but I’m a bit confused when I try the links because there are so many dl1961 Emma jeans from which to choose. If you could only choose one blue jean color, one white color, and one black color, which Emma jeans would you buy? Thanks in advance.

    1. Hey Bev, it really depends on what type of wash you will wear the most. The light wash is more casual, and the darker washes are more dressy, but can be casual if you want them to be. I have the Token wash (https://bit.ly/2jpq3lU) and they’re a really nice basic dark skinny jean, but for my casual life, I tend to gravitate to lighter washes for everyday. My light wash Emmas are old, so I’ve started linking to these: https://bit.ly/2jRw6wo. I’ve tried the white ones, and they’re really nice. I also really like my white Paige skinnies: https://bit.ly/2jRkd9q (I sized up in those.) My black jeans are Frame (https://bit.ly/2jpvFgh), but you could certainly can’t go wrong with the Emma in black. They’re very similar in cut to the Frame: https://bit.ly/2jpoip0. Hope that helps!

  9. Hello. This may be a silly question but is the AYW course only a ‘local’ thing?

I’m in Missouri so wondering if it’s an option for me

  10. Hi Jo-Lynne! As you know, I’m taking the AYW course and already knew bootcut jeans look best on me. They also say a straight cut for short-waisted pears. So I’ll venture to Nordstrom some day to try on a bunch of premium brands. Gotta find a pair that doesn’t stretch out too much! Thanks for all that you do and for mentioning AYW. I can’t wait to clean out my closet and only buy what looks good on me! 🙂

    1. Carrie, when you try on your jeans they should fit snug as many stretch out quite a bit. I learned this the hard way. Do you agree. Jolynne?

  11. Thanks! I thought it was online but I read a comment from the unboxing post that said you were getting a lot of shout outs and that threw me off!
I’ll hopefully be able to do the next one. Sounds interesting!!

  12. Hi Jo-Lynne,
I know you didn’t specifically mention it in this post, but I’m wondering about your DY bracelet – is it the “extra large” or “large” link style? I’ve been eyeing it for some time, it is so pretty and versatile.
    Thank you!

  13. Love this look! And, I love your explanation of why the Loft pants don’t work, but I’d actually like to see a picture of that, too. I think your explanation plus the visual of what doesn’t work compared with what does work would be helpful. Have a great week!

  14. Stopped in WHBM today to find this sweater – I tried on a large & think I could go down to a medium – unfortunately they were out of my size in the store but they ordered it for me. When I tried it on I loved it!! Can’t wait till my size comes!!
