Plaid, Camel & White Jeans for Fall
Good morning, friends! TGIF! Today I’m partnering with Nordstrom to share another way to wear white jeans for fall. I wore a variation of this outfit to church a few weeks ago, and I got several compliments.
I told my husband I wanted to go somewhere pretty to shoot this look, and he suggested this cool nature preserve. We actually photographed another outfit there last fall. It is so pretty, although I felt ridic tromping around in 3-inch heeled over-the-knee boots. Haha! Thing things I do for this blog . . .
One wardrobe item I’ve been wanting to add to my closet this year is a classic camel sweater that I can layer under scarves and quilted vests. Camel is so pretty paired with blue jeans, black, white, even plum and burgundy. Plus it looks amazing with leopard, and y’all KNOW how I love me some leopard.
I had a longer style that I got at the #NSale that I loved. It fit okay before I lost weight, but the last time I wore it, I realized how ridiculously oversized it looked on me so I decided to send it on to a better home. I’m looking for a more classic style that hits me at my sweet spot and flatters my curves — easier said than done!
I typically steer clear of crew necklines, but in this case I thought that might work best with the outfits I have in mind. Plus V-necks can be cold, and I’m a grannie. I work with a space heater next to my desk in the wintertime because no matter how high I turn the thermostat, I always seem to have a chill. I think it’s because this room is on the front of the house and the thermostat is in the back.
I thought it might be helpful to show both of them to you and share my thought process, so here are the two side-by-side. Pardon the ponytail and lack of makeup. See, I’m not as vain as you thought! (I actually don’t mind baring my face but I really do wish I had a full set of eyebrows. Ha!)
Interestingly, the Halogen (left) is much softer than the J.Crew (right), but the J.Crew holds it shape better and doesn’t wrinkle as easily. It’s clearly better quality, although I actually prefer the feel of the Halogen against my skin. The J.Crew sweater also has more yellow in it, which is not as flattering on me. I try to look for cooler undertones. Camel isn’t the best color next to my face anyway, but I plan to wear it with a scarf or bold colored vest so I can make it work.
I wish these sweaters were a bit more fitted through the waist and not quite so long. I look more balanced when my tops are about an inch shorter than these, but I’m not having much luck finding shorter sweaters. (Petites are too short and regulars are usually too long. It’s frustrating, and sweaters can’t really be tailored.) These are both size medium, by the way.
Between these two, I like the Halogen one better. The price tag is much more palatable, for one thing, plus it feels nicer on and the color is slightly cooler. I do think the small would probably fit better, so I ordered one to see how it compares. I’ll keep you posted!
You may remember this scarf from my pumpkin patch post. It’s perfect over beige and camel tones. I’m a huge fan of the infinity scarf because it takes the guesswork out of styling. You just throw it on, wrap it twice, and go!
As a woman who is, ahem, blessed in the chest area, scarves can add bulk and visual weight, so I’ve learned that they look best if I allow them to hang longer — almost to the waist. To achieve this with an infinity scarf, I usually leave one loop shorter and make the other one longer. I just play with it until it looks right.
I love wearing white jeans this time of year because it’s unexpected, and they add a crispness to any outfit. The key to pulling off white jeans for fall is to pair them with heavier pieces in fall colors. Not only did I pair them with a long-sleeve cashmere sweater, but I added over the knee boots and a scarf — lest anyone wonder if I think it’s July! Ha!
I’ve had a few people ask about what white jeans I recommend, and these Paige Verdugos offer great coverage. Mine are a discontinued ankle-length version, but these appear to be the same fabric so should afford the same coverage.
I’m also a huge fan of DL1961’s white jeans because they are thick and provide great coverage, but they’re still stretchy and comfortable. I have the Florence in Milk, but I think I prefer the Emma in Porcelain. The Florence style is an inch longer than the Emma and a tad wider in the leg, but they’re both considered skinny jeans. If you like a straight leg style, the DL1961 Coco Curvy Straight in Milk is a great option. All three of these DL1961 styles are on sale for 33% off at Nordstrom right now!
For white jeans at a lower price point, these from Two by Vince Camuto get pretty good reviews. The great thing about ordering from Nordstrom is you can order a few and return the ones that don’t work out for free. Nordstrom has a fabulous denim department, and many styles are on sale right now as they’re having a fall clearance event.
I love how this teal crossbody coordinates with the teal in the scarf. I debated a teal bag or burgundy, but the teal one… this time!
Finally, these over the knee boots were a sale purchase last winter, and I am so glad I went for it. I was unsure about this trend, maybe I’m too old or they’re too edgy or something, but I absolutely love them.
Mine are by Dolce Vita and they are incredibly comfortable — leather inside and out, but they’ve been discontinued. Dolce Vita has a new pair this year, but I have been linking to a Vince Camuto pair that I think looks more like mine. Both brands make a great shoe, and either is a great option if you’re looking to try this trend. Bonus, both are 25% off at Nordstrom!
By way of update, I wrote this post last week, and since then I ordered the Halogen sweater in a small. It fits SO much better! So if you’re thinking of ordering it, you may want to size down. It also comes in about a dozen other colors. It’s a great fall and winter basic that should last several years.
Halogen Crewneck Cashmere Sweater // similar white jeans (less expensive option) // Plaid Infinity Scarf // similar OTK boots (ON SALE!) // Kate Spade Spencer Court Lavina Crossbody // double pearl earrings (my new faves! only $28 and you can wear them either way — large or small) // Nails: CND Fedora
And it’s Friday, so that means linkup day! If you have a fashion blog, I’d love for you to join us. If you’re here for your weekly dose of style inspiration, you’ll find plenty of that here. Have a beautiful weekend!
