Leopard Silk Blouse Two Ways

I’ve always been a big fan of leopard and animal prints, but I tend to incorporate them into my outfits in small doses — a clutch, a scarf, a belt, ballet flats or pumps… accessories, mostly! But J.Crew has a whole line of leopard print out right now and I’m absolutely in love. I ordered the shift dress and this cuffed sleeve silk top. The dress didn’t flatter me, but I think this blouse is adorable.

This top would be perfect for work with black pants or a pencil skirt. I love how they pair it with a mustard yellow skirt on the website. I still don’t have black pants that I like so I paired it with black jeans. I think it would also be cute with blue jeans for a more casual look.

I decided to carry a bright pink purse for color, but it’s a bit much. A more subdued color would probably be ideal — like this Vince Camuto tote in Smokey Quartz or this Kate Spade in Merlot. Of course black or camel would work too, but I was trying to add something a little bit unexpected to the outfit.

For shoes, I went with black suede pumps. I first tried it with my Kate Spade chunky sandals, but I prefer the more conservative pumps since the leopard makes a pretty bold statement.

My pumps are well over 10 years old. (Seriously! I remember my mom buying them for me back when we lived in our old house — and we moved here 11 years ago.) These were my first pair of Stuart Weitzmans. I was shoe shopping with my mom, and we wandered into the Stuart Weitzman store. They were having a sale, but even so, they were waaaaay out of my budget at the time, so she treated me to a pair. I blame her for getting me hooked. Ha! She’s a longtime fan of the brand and wears them to the office. Anyway, this is proof that a good pair of classic pumps can last you many, many years.

Since mine are long gone (although these are similar), I linked to these Sam Edelman suede pumps. They’re more delicate than mine, but I think they’re so pretty.

I wanted to show this look with a jacket because a top layer will be necessary when it finally gets cold around here. It works well with my cotton coated moto jacket, although I think I’d like it better with a more traditional blazer.

I tried on this seasonless blazer at White House Black Market last week, and it is very flattering. I didn’t buy it, but I’ve been thinking I might get it if/when it goes on sale.

I can totally see wearing this look out to dinner with my husband or to meet some girlfriends for lunch. It would also work for a conference or blogging event.

We took these pictures Sunday morning, and I liked the outfit so much that I decided to wear it to church. Because we were going to my in-laws for lunch afterwards and I didn’t want to wear heels all day, I decided to switch to my chestnut suede lace-up flats and a black handbag.

I had my husband take a few shots of this more casual version of the outfit so you can see how versatile this top is. I also think it would be really cute with blue jeans and the chestnut flats, but I didn’t want to do blue jeans for church.

I picked up these flats during the #NSale, and they’ve been sitting in my closet waiting for a time such as this. I knew they’d come in handy! I just love this color for fall. They are also currently in sock! WOOT! (The chestnut were sold out for a while.)

I did the front tuck with the blouse in the dressier outfit above, so this time I left it untucked to show you how it can be worn both ways. I also think this bag is gorgeous against the blouse.

I added a few gold accessories to complete the look — big gold hoop earrings (similar) and my pave sphinx cuff and ring.

I really like this more casual version of the outfit. There’s something about the chestnut flats against the black jeans that makes your eye bounce back up to the leopard top, and then the black bag with gold hardware compliments the gold jewelry and the gold grommets on the shoes. It’s simple, but put-together and chic.

  1. You’re right, this is such a polished and chic look. The leopard top is bold but still very tasteful. I love it both of the ways you styled it, but the more casual is my personal favorite. I think J Crew Factory has a similar version -or did last I skimmed through.

  2. I love the outfit — and honestly adore the pink purse with it. I love pops of colors with neutrals and I consider leopard a neutral — even with the yellow in the top.

  3. Love this look! I know you are trying to decide what to wear in HH… What about this top with white skinnies and the pink purse for that first cocktail party? The entire look says ‘you’ in a way that projects confidence. I think you’ll feel uncomfortable if you try to dress in golf club casual, or Southern resort wear or any style that is not ‘you’.

  4. I see you are coming to Hilton Head. I live here year around. You are going to love it. Be sure to bring your swim suit, the temps and sun are still very available for the beach.

  5. If you are staying at the Westin next week – it IS absolutely gorgeous!! My hubby’s niece got married there last month and I SO did not want to leave. I could have stayed by the pool, under the palms, having my slushy drinks brought to me on a tray for days…alas son had to get back for school so we swooped in and swooped out.

  6. I love both versions of this outfit. However, the first one with the pumps and jacket are just WOW!! Looking gorgeous!

  7. I read your post, walked over J. Crew at Suburban Square & bought the top w/ a super cute long tortoise chain link & pearl long necklace that was on-sale in-store. (Top was full price–but worth it b/c adds so many possibilities to my wardrobe). Already have black pumps & black dress pants. Perfect, easy outfit. Looks great. Thank you! (I also tried on the sheath dress in the same print & it was not flattering on me either!)
