Summer Outfit: Lace-Up Flats with Shorts

Lace-up flats with shorts is a fresh, fun look for summer. I'm wearing Old Navy Pixie Chino Shorts and M.Gemi Brezza Lace Up Flats in Latte.

Lace-up flats with shorts might seem like an odd combination, but sometimes even this girl gets tired of sandals! Lace-up flats are a fun trend that work well with everything from shorts to jeans to dresses, and they’re just as appropriate in the summertime as they are during the other three seasons of the year.

These are my new M.Gemi Brezza lace-up ballet flats.

There’s actually a story here . . . I was eyeing up this style all through last fall and winter. The more I saw them, the more I wanted a pair. As far as I know, M.Gemi created the original (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) and it seemed to be the brand to have, but lots of other brands hopped on the bandwagon and created their own versions. I tried quite a few of the knock-offs in the late winter/early spring because I didn’t want to spend a lot on a trendy style that I wasn’t sure I’d wear a lot, but they were all dreadfully uncomfortable so they all went back. I pretty much gave up on finding a pair of lace-up flats.

Fast forward to the RewardStyle Conference in April, and I discovered that M.Gemi was one of the brand sponsors. They had a booth with tons of samples for trying on so I went right for the Brezza lace-up flats, and whoa!!! There is a reason these babies cost $248. They are absolutely gorgeous, hand-crafted in Italy, and incredibly comfortable. I feel like I’m wearing slippers.

I spoke for a while to the brand rep, she gave me a little gift bag, and I moved along to visit the other booths. When I got back to my room, what did I find in that little gift bag but an M.Gemi gift card!?! I didn’t waste any time opening up my laptop and ordering a pair.

They came in a couple of weeks ago, but of course we’re in the dead of summer and suede ballet flats aren’t the first shoes I reach for when I get dressed in the morning, so it took me a while to get around to wearing them. I brought them with me on our vacation last weekend, hoping for a chance, and I ended up putting them with this outfit. (Gotta love a resort that has a Starbucks!)

Lace-up flats with shorts is a fresh, fun look for summer. I'm wearing Old Navy Pixie Chino Shorts in Lilac and M.Gemi Brezza Lace Up Flats in Latte.

I always like how lace-up flats look styled with jean shorts, but for this post I wanted to feature my new Old Navy Pixie Chino Shorts in Ashen Lilac. I think the lilac and the latte are so pretty together.

The Old Navy Pixie Chino Shorts have a 3 1/2″ inseam, which is my favorite length for shorts. If you like a longer inseam, their Everyday Twill Shorts have a 5″ inseam. I ordered my regular size 8 in both, and the Pixie Chino Shorts fit perfectly, but the Everyday Twill Shorts were a little large, so if you go for that style, you may want to size down.

On top, I added a classic white t-shirt and a denim vest. The outfit was rather plain with just the t-shirt and shorts, and the denim vest adds a nice point of interest. Of course, if it’s too hot for a vest, the outfit is just fine without it. Just add another accessory like a bold necklace.

For jewelry, I kept it simple. I wore my engravable bar necklace and a pair of hoops and a few Alex and Ani wire charm bangles. I experimented with adding a longer pendant necklace and ditched it, but looking at these pictures, I think I could have used it. Oh, well.

My denim vest is almost sold out, but here is another option, although it is about 2 inches shorter than mine. You may remember that I had the medium, and it was on the larger side, so I exchanged it for a small. I do think the small is the right size because I can button it comfortably if I want to, but the bottom sticks out funny, which is why I’m holding it in most of these pictures, lol. All that to say, I almost wish I’d kept the medium.

My grey crossbody completed the outfit without competing with the muted color palette. The Mini MAC is a R Minkoff classic, but the colors change frequently. THESE are the current color options, and some are on sale.

I suppose my white saddlebag would have worked too, but I like how this bag compliments the shoes.

What do you think? Would you wear lace-up flats with shorts?

  1. I love my lace up shoes—-it’s funny how we get so drawn to a look!!
I’ve been eyeing that brand of shoes, but haven’t succumbed yet…it’s nice to know that they are truly comfy!
Love your lilac shorts—in a couple of the pics, I thought they were pink—but then when you said lilac—it made sense!

ps…of course you can edit your own pictures!! It just takes a little practice!! There’s even some online courses or you could probably google everything!!

    1. I wanted pink – I ordered pink in the other style, but these didn’t come in a light pink. 🙂 The lilac is nice, though! I know I could edit my pictures, but he has spent soooo much time perfecting it, I just leave them to him. I need to take some time and have him show me what he does. I keep saying I want to do that, but whenever he’s here, it’s just easier for him to do them himself, lol.

  2. Love the shoes! You mentioned you wish you’d added the long necklace with this outfit and I think I would have liked to have seen it, too. I love the long necklace trend. I feel as if it elongates my body and takes the eye away from my large bust. As for the vest, the size issue is a struggle. I bought 2 of the longer vests from Gap this spring and sent the larges back for XL because the L wouldn’t zip over my bust. But later, when I put them on, they seemed too large and a little sloppy. I concluded they would work better for fall with heavier clothing. Sigh.

    1. I totally agree on the long necklace trend. And the vests… lol. Not my favorite layering piece. I love a jean jacket, so I’m not sure why the vests don’t work as well on me. Maybe I need to give it time to break in.

  3. Those shoes are adorable! I bought a cheap pair in a similar style earlier this year but they just didn’t fit right so I returned them as well. With this style it seems like quality is important! And love those shorts. Old Navy is my go-to for shorts lately.

  4. Great outfit Jo-Lynne! The lace-up shoes are so pretty, especially the color. I hear you on getting back in the swing of things. We just returned home late yesterday, after being gone 11 days, so now I’ve got to get back on track, after my coffee though.

    Have a blessed day!

  5. Super cute! The shoes are gorgeous! I was all over the lace up trend too, but it took me a bit to commit. I started with a super cheap $15 pair to ease into it. I loved the style so I upgraded a little. I got the bp brand and loved them after I finally found the right size. Love your vest and shorts too. I gave up on finding a reasonably priced vest I love. I’ve returned two and quit looking, lol.

    1. Yeah, this actually still has tags on. I’ve styled it twice but never worn it more than 20 minutes. It might go back. I like it in theory, but I felt like I was always futzing with it.

  6. I’d not seen a pair of lace-ups yet that even tempted me at all, but those shoes are exquisite! And your feet and legs look lovely in them. I hope that didn’t sound fresh! But so often lace-ups make people’s legs look a little boxy to me. The pretty point of the toe makes those extremely feminine and flattering.

  7. Beautiful shoes! I’ve tried several of the lace up shoes, but like you, found all of them to be extremely uncomfortable. I’m going to take a look at the ones your wearing.
    The whole outfit looks perfect!

  8. Love! I was looking for ideas on how to wear them for the summer too. I like that it is an option to wearing sandals all the time.

      1. Ha – you know I haven’t decided yet? Deciding on things like this is not my strong suit (can you tell?). I still have about a week to decide. The blush is growing on me though…and, they don’t have Luggage in my size (at least not right now), so that is at least helping to narrow down my choice to 2 colors :p

  9. I just wanted to say that I have 2 pairs of Sam Edelman lace ups and they are extremely comfortable but at a cheaper price point. I have worn them any times all day and they too are like slippers. Just a thought for those who might not want to invest that much- from a confirmed shoeaholic!

  10. Do u find it difficult to keep the laces up on your leg? I have a pair of similar shoes and have not found the right technique to keep them laced up my lower calf.

  11. Just FYI your text says 40 DOLLARS off the shoes but under the picture it says 40 PERCENT off. At $248 that’s quite a difference.

  12. They really are cute. Having great legs helps the cause. I peeped the way your nail polish matches those adorable shorts. Keep looking good and posting your amazing fashion sense.

  13. Sorry can’t cover my toes in the dead heat of summer and paying to get a pedicure. I wait for the warmer weather to wiggle my pretty toes. I’d definitely wear these shoes in the fall!
    Thanks for listening.

  14. I’ve been coveting a pair of MGemi shoes and your review is very convincing. I actually don’t think they came up with that style but they do have a gorgeous version of it, because about 3 years ago I got a pair of lace-up flats from J.Crew from their Italy collection. Funny enough these didn’t even sold out that quckly because they were not IN.

  15. Love this post!! I was glad to hear I wasn’t the only one who had problems and finding that style super uncomfortable. I tried on a ton at DSW and ended up with a super cheap a pair. They are SUPER cheap (with a coupon I only paid $10) but they were so comfortable. I thought it was because I have extra wide feet and just couldn’t fit into the pointy toe style. I wear my black lace up flats with everything. But I absolutely ADORE your neutral ones. The MGemi shoes are gorgeous!!
