January Try-On Sesh

Greetings and salutations! I hope y’all are having a good weekend. Late yesterday afternoon, I did a quickie try-on sesh on my Insta Story (you can still catch it if you missed it… it’s live for 24 hours) and I wanted to share pictures and links with you here.

I’ve been wanting to try some of the trending cropped straight jeans, particularly the Levis I’m seeing all over Instagram, and of course it’s always more fun with friends! I have a few more pairs from other brands coming, but today I’ll share what I have so far. I’m also working on a denim under $100 post, so I’ve been trying different denim skinny styles to recommend as well.

Before we dive in, I thought I should address a question that came up on my Facebook Page yesterday, in light of my post on spring trends. We can talk about this more on my Facebook Live this week, but here’s the question:

“I find it difficult to do trends – I turn 50 this year. Yikes. How do I incorporate trends without looking like an old lady who’s trying to look too young?”

This is a valid question, and I think something worth discussing. When I share a seasonal trends post, it’s often before the trends hit the mainstream market, so they often seem kind of extreme. Trust me, as the retailers roll out their spring lines, we will see more subtle variations on those trends, and they won’t all seem so far out there.

But the question is still relevant. How do we incorporate the trends as we get older without looking like try-hards? Because let’s face it, no one wants that… least of all me!

I’ll start by saying, I don’t believe in being a slave to trends. But as with all matters of fashion, I think the trends we choose to embrace should be less about age and more about personal style.

What is the saying? “Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.”

I share the current and upcoming trends because I think it’s fun to see what’s coming next, and it’s helpful to know what the trends are so we can keep our style current. But that doesn’t mean that we should all embrace every trend that comes down the pike. In fact, I strongly discourage that.

I do think, however, that no matter what your age, you can incorporate some of the current trends into your existing wardrobe in a way that is classy and age appropriate. You just have to pick and choose what works for you based on your personal style, your lifestyle, your body type, your coloring, all of those things that go into making any other wardrobe decision.

If you choose an age at which you decide to ignore all current and future trends, you’ll end up looking dated and frumpy in no time. You know those women you see out and about, and their hair is stuck in a certain decade, or their pants style, or whatever? Our style should always be evolving because we change, our lifestyles and occupations may change, our bodies may change; and trends can be a part of that, but the most important thing is that those trends work for you, you don’t work for them. Ohhh, I like that! That should be on a meme somewhere. Ha!

Okay, that’s enough about that, but I think we should make our next Facebook Live (on Wednesday at 1PM EST!) about unpacking this conversation a little bit more, plus I can speak to more specific questions better in that format. I am by no means an expert, but I’ve definitely grown over the years in knowing what works for my body, my lifestyle, my personal style, and I’ve always loved being a little bit ahead of the game when it comes to new trends. I just think it’s fun!

But there’s definitely a fine line between incorporating a few select trends in a way that works for your personal style, and being a slave to the trends for the sake of being trendy. And I’m not saying it’s always easy to find that line, but I think it should be the goal.

That said, it’s just fashion, guys. I mean, what’s the worst thing that can happen if you wear a trend and it doesn’t quite work for you? So you tried… no worries! Have fun with it. Life is short to worry too much about what you wear.

Okay, that was a lengthy prelude. Let’s get started here!

January Try-On Sesh

I’m a sucker for a good sweater dress this time of year, but a great fitting sweater dress can be hard to find. Some are too clingy, some hang on you or grow as you wear them, some are too short, but this cashmere turtleneck sweater dress is pretty much the perfect in every way! (For size reference, I have the medium, and I’d recommend sizing up if you’re at all in doubt.) It’s a nice quality, and while it’s a little on the shorter side, I will almost always wear it with tights. That said, I first snapped a selfie with ankle boots and bare legs.

I would definitely like this better with the sock booties, but the pair I had got donated so I need to find something else. (They weren’t comfortable.) I threw on this leather pair, but I don’t think they’re quite working with the dress. I like these ankle boots better with jeans.

Ankle boots with dresses is definitely a trend at the moment, but I always prefer to wear dresses with tall boots. I just feel like it’s more flattering, and they’re warmer too. In fact, I wore this dress with tights and tall boots to dinner last night. (I added accessories, of course!) These boots sold out (I bought them on an end of season sale) so I will link to similar styles.

Okay, moving on to the jeans!

Unfortunately I didn’t wear any of these for more than 2 minutes because I was trying to get through the try-on sesh, so I can’t really speak to how they wear over time. The Levi’s definitely feel stiffer and thicker than the jeans I’m used to wearing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it would take some getting used to.

This first pair is the Levi’s 505C High Rise Crop Jeans. They have a 10″ rise, 28″ inseam, 14″ leg opening, and they’re $98. I ordered a size 29 from Bloomingdale’s. (I normally wear 28 or 29, and I’ve been told these run small, so I went with 29.) They DEFINITELY run small. I’d be curious to wear them around and see if they loosen up, but I feel like I need a bigger size in the waist. That said, I wouldn’t want them to be any wider or longer, and sizing up can change how they fit in the leg, so I’m not sure I’ll be ordering a size up.

So the verdict… I don’t love them but I don’t hate them either. I mean, I really thought I might. I like them better than girlfriend/boyfriend jeans, for example. Of course, I’m only wearing a t-shirt, so my opinion might change if I try on some other sweaters and tops.

I didn’t get a good look at the rear view, and I wish I had because that’s as important as the front view. I will try them on again today and wear them for a little longer to see what I think. I have to say, they work really well with the mules.

These are the Levi’s 501 Taper from Revolve. They have a 27″ inseam, 9″ rise, and 12″ leg opening, and they’re also $98 and a size 29. These have a sewn hem as opposed to the raw hem, which I think I like better, but I don’t love that big hole on the thigh. I think I prefer the wash and distressing of the pair above.

I tried them first like this, and they didn’t look quite right to me, so then I tried rolling them.

Here you can see them rolled. I just did a single small cuff, but it makes all the difference, in my opinion. I like the slightly shorter length, and it just gives a chicer vibe somehow.

I’m not totally sold on these, but I would like to put them on again and wear them around for a bit, maybe try them with a couple different tops. I definitely see myself adding a pair of jeans in this general style/silhouette to my closet this year. They’re fun and fashion forward, and on trend without being too far out there (in my opinion.)

jeans // tee // mules

I do want to try some other brands, and I have a few from premium brands on order, but the price on these is pretty good so it may be worth keeping them while I wait to see if the trend really takes hold.

Mind you, I’ve been following other fashion bloggers rocking this look for a while, and my eye has begun to grow accustomed to it. I think it takes a while to get used to a new style of pants, and you may hate them right now, but give it some time. See what you think in a few months.

For me, I’ve always enjoyed being a little ahead of the trends, and I live in denim, so I think it makes sense to try to incorporate this style into my wardrobe this spring, but it may not be right for you… or you may want to wait until your eye adjusts to make up your mind.

Speaking of trends that may take a while for your eye to adjust to… here are the white loafers I ordered. *grin*

Ever since someone said they reminded them of their dad’s Sunday shoes in the 70s, that is ALL I SEE when I look at these. Haha! But there’s something about them that I kind of like.

They’re the Sam Edelman Loraine leather loafers, and I ordered them from Bloomingdale’s in a size 8.5. I wear an 8.5 in the Felicia Flats, but these are a little big on me so they have to go back. I think a smaller size would look a little better too. I’m seeing these all over the place in various colors, and I’m always drawn to them on others so I’m not ruling them out yet, but I do want to try a few other styles before I decide which ones to keep.

jeans // shoes

I’m tempted to order the R Minkoff pair I have in black… I already know that they’re comfortable and easy to walk in, and they have that minimalistic style that I really like. something about that buckle is throwing me off, I think.

I tried the Me Too Audra, and I like them, but they seem a little too sweet or safe or something… I can’t put my finger on it, but I don’t think they have quite the vibe I’m going for. They’re definitely flattering, though, and very comfortable.

While I love the loafers with this style of jean, a sleek bootie is another good option. Bloomingdale’s is running a big sale right now and there are tons of good boots and booties included (and mules too!) I’m sharing some on my FB Page later today. Here are some ankle boots that I think would work well with cropped jeans. I’m planning to order one or two, myself. Just trying to decide which.

Okay, back to jeans! Someone recommended these Levi’s Slimming Skinny Jeans, and they’re a great price so I ordered a pair to try. I have to say, I’m pretty impressed at first attempt. I’d like to wear them around a bit and see if they stretch out in a flattering way, but they’re initially very figure flattering.

My only complaint is the leg opening. It’s a little wide and cuts off my leg in a funny way. I can’t find the leg opening measurement anywhere, but the inseam length is 28″. I ordered the short because I wanted the ankle length. Also, these are not 100% cotton like the Levi’s above. These are 65% Cotton, 17% Polyester, 16% Viscose, 2% Lycra.

jeans // sweater // mules

Okay, these next jeans are the Vigoss brand, which is carried by Nordstrom. I ordered these because they look very similar to my AG raw hem legging ankle jeans (that incidentally are ON SALE!!! They don’t have my size 28, but I’m stalking them because I want to grab a pair before they’re gone. If they’re at Saks Off Fifth, they’re probably discontinued. #sob)

Any-WHO. These Vigoss jeans are great so far. Again, I didn’t wear them long enough to see if they bag out, but they’re my favorite of the AG dupes I’ve tried so far. I love the fit, and the wash and distressing looks really good for the price point.

jeans // sweater // mules

Finally, these are the Old Navy Mid-Rise Rockstar jeans in Cinnamon Cake, and I also ordered this Textured-Knit Open-Front Cardi in Paper Roses. I’ve tried these jeans before, and for $34, you really can’t go wrong. They fit nicely and feel okay on — not as soft and quality as the Vigoss, but then they’re half the price.

They do bag out with wear, I’ve found in the past, so I don’t recommend them as highly as the others, but for a color like this that is memorable and I won’t wear a ton, I thought they were a good buy.

The sweater is a nice quality tight knit, and it’s a great wear now and later piece, if you have spring fever but still need sweaters to stay warm. The color is a little more peach than I was anticipating so I don’t feel like it’s that flattering on me, but some of you may like it. It also comes in navy and off-white.

sweater // jeans // tee // flats

I hope you found that helpful, or fun, or entertaining or something. Ha!

Before I let you go, I also wanted to draw your attention to my SHOP page. I’ve updated it for the new year, and I also added a little widget on my sidebar (easier to see if you’re on a computer as opposed to mobile) that you can scroll through to see some of my current favorite styles. It looks like this:

I hope that’s helpful!

  1. I hate being negative Nellie but I think the jeans with holes should be under 20 age group. That being said I love 95% of what you show, Jolynne. You are my favorite blogger.

    1. LOL, I know the distressed denim isn’t for everyone. It’s always been a highly debated topic on the blog. I’ve been wearing it for 10 years – I’ve always loved the way it gives the more classic pieces in my wardrobe a more edgy vibe, and there’s something about the texture that it adds to an outfit that I also like a lot. Many of the 40-y/o moms in my neighborhood are wearing them now, I’ve noticed recently, so I think it’s only a matter of time before they phase out, but for now I’m still enjoying them. 🙂 Of course, my grandkids will probably look back at pictures of me and mock my ripped jeans… ha!

      1. I’m in my 50’s and love my distressed jeans! I know that not everyone likes them, but I think it’s just about your own personal style.
I know I’m a day late reading this post, but I really enjoyed this try on sesh! ????

  2. The old navy rockstar jeans are my current go to pair. They don’t gap in the back as much as most and I don’t notice them bagging out on me. I also got them at a thrift store for $3!

  3. First of all, you are adorable.  Secondly, I just can’t get my head around ripped jeans.  That just screams “try-hard” to me! (But i’m older than you ????) I don’t even really like them on the younger women but my daughter wears them and looks cute. Just my two cents.  I love the sweater dress! The tights and taller boots with it are spot on! I’m going to pass on the loafer look. As you said, we have to dress to our own style!  Happy weekend.  I always love reading your blog because you are so genuine.

  4. Thank you for doing this type of post! It really is helpful to see trends styled on someone I trust. Your honesty is so refreshing!

  5. I love the Old Navy Rockstar jeans.  I find them super comfy and I got several pairs for under $25!   Gotta love a great deal.  I have to agree about the white shoes – makes me think of what my dad had in the 70s.  Haha!

    1. I’m glad the Rockstar jeans work for you. I know a lot of women like them, which is why I often link to them as a similar for less option. I think one of the keys to wearing the white loafers is to wear them with trendier looks… I even saw a girl wearing them with jean shorts… not that I’m going there. I couldn’t pull it off, but it definitely makes them seem more modern. I wouldn’t wear them with conservative dress pants to work, for example.

  6. I loved this post And i so agree about not staying stuck in a certain decade cause it looked good on you then, for example i was at the gym yesterday and a lady my age came in with the bangs from back in the 80s a pair of sweat pants on and a oversized tee shirt, hay at least she was at the gym but ……….. enough on that, and when i stop by the store after my workout in my work out fit everyone ask why i was matchy match. i had on a solid color fitting shirt with a pair of leggings with a subtle print and i had picked up the under color in the pants for my shirt??? I love new trends and like the post says you have to fit it to you. Now to some of the clothes you wear, i actually have a couple of the outfits and have started wearing booties with my sweater dress. Thank you so much for being “my” stylist.

  7. I like the jeans… but I am a fan of boyfriend jeans and those are similar 🙂 … I have seen a pair of white mules (scrolling on fb) that looked cute … 2 trends in one ! Ha!  Not sure I’ll jump on the white shoe yet though.  Have a great Saturday!!

  8. Thanks for trying on all this stuff so we don’t have to. 🙂 I think I could easily get used to seeing the straight leg crop style. As you said, it has a fun edgy vibe to it, like boyfriend jeans but more flattering. I don’t know if I could get used to the all cotton, though. You’ll have to let us know how they feel with a little wear. Also curious to see the straight crop in the premium brands that you ordered. It looks like a comfy style I’d wear a lot so in my opinion it’s worth spending a little more for. I live in my jeans as well. And I happen to like the distressing, though I think it is going to be one trend that dies hard when it dies.

    1. I think you’re right about that. In fact, the more I notice the suburban moms in my area wearing them, the more I think that will happen sooner rather than later. I’m not in an area that is typically on the cutting edge of fashion, so once styles get common out here, they start to disappear on the fashion blogs as people move on to the next thing. It’s something I’ve noticed as I pay more attention to fashion for the blog.

  9. Loved the sweater dress on you. If we’re being honest, I didn’t care for either of the Levi jeans on you. Thanks for the try-on sesh, always fun.

  10. Happy Saturday!
Just can’t do faded and torn jeans…
Look a little to worn out.
Love the darker wash and white loafers
I can see you wearing them a lot in spring and
    Summer.

    1. I read when researching spring trends that dark denim is trending? Funny b/c the straight cropped styles tend to be very faded and worn looking,, so I’m curious to see how that plays out. I’m all for a good pair of dark denim. They’re classy and tend to look better on more people.

  11. Like these other women I often wonder if I’m too old for ripped jeans. I just turned 50. I also agree about your style vs trends. I could probably wear ripped jeans that weren’t too ripped, like what you show because it would go with my style. What I’m really struggling with is the high rise. Ugh…these jeans don’t look that high rise. How high on your waist are they?

      1. Thank you! Even with the measurements, it’s hard to know sometimes. Good luck with those other ones. ????????????

Your blog is so Great! I stumbled on you by accident looking for some fashion advice. So glad I did! I’ve told all my friends about you and shared your post on Facebook. Thanks for keeping fashion and style fun, relevant and for all! Just because we like beautiful things and looking great doesn’t mean we can’t conquer the world! ????????

  12. I think jeans with Minimal wear or Rips is ok. I’m 51 and have 3 teen girls.  They keep me straight on what’s ok and what’s trying too hard. I do think any tips showing skin is not for anyone over 30

    1. Yeah, I definitely pay attention to how ripped up they are, I like it fairly minimal. A busted out knee doesn’t bother me to much, but I prefer them when they’re new and they still have the threads going across. 🙂

  13. I know you like sweaters similar to the lavender one but it’s not your best look.  If you compare to other lines this type of sweater makes your shoulders look wide and you lose your waist. I have the same problem.  This silhouette makes me look blocky.

  14. Ver nice post!  I also watched the IG Story.  You are HILAROUS!  I agree with you on the black skinny jeans.  Just seems strange how the bottom flares out a bit.  Love the lavender sweater on you.  The sweater dress is stunning with the tall black boots.  I don’t wear distressed jeans, but still likehearing your   pros & cons on the various styles. I had to chuckle to myself on the white mules/loafers you were styling.  I had a pair of white mules with a buckle across the top for a good many years.  Finally donated them a year or two ago, as I didn’t wear them that much!  Now I’m wishing I kept them!  They were soft leather, and from Thom McCan at Kmart!!!  Of all places!   I found a pair that looks exactly like them at JC Penny for at least triple the price of what I paid.  You know how people say keep something long enough & it will come back in style??? I really did like how they looked on you, so I may be looking for a new pair!  I have a bit of a wide foot, so that makes sizing a little challenging.  Have a fun weekend!

  15. I’m curious if the Levi’s 501 pair have a button fly?  I’m probably dating myself but in the ‘70s all I wore were 501s and they always buttoned up. Glad to see all these outfits…I love your try on sessions on your Instagram stories!

  16. I agree with the first comment about the jeans. I think the torn jeans look terrible, at any age, but especially if you are over high school. I’m sorry, I am old school, if an item is torn, if you can’t fix it, it goes in the rag bag. To spend a $100 for an already torn item to me is really being a “slave” to fashion.

Other than that, most of the items you show are beautiful, especially on you. I truly covet the white loafers and am hoping come spring I can find a pair that are comfortable and affordable.

  17. That sweater dress! Wow! I’m always so paranoid that the sweater dress will catch on things when sitting in restaurant chairs, etc, and pull. Is that a problem at all for you?

The white shoes! I love them, brings back memories of my white flats I had when I was 14. (the ’80s!). I wore those almost everyday! They do look fresh for spring, a pretty classic shoe.

I’m getting used to the jeans already, I think the slightly looser fit will be a nice change…

  18. I like the white pointy toe loafers in your Instagram much better than the buckle style your featured today.

I have horrible luck with the durability of Old Navy clothes. It seems after a couple of washes they are either stretched, pilling or torn at the seams. Does anyone else find this to be true? That said, I think the Rockstar jeans look great on you – love the color!

    1. I meant to get a picture of those other loafers – maybe I can do that now and add it.

I don’t find Old Navy quality to be that great, but they have some cute pieces for the price point.

  19. Fantastic post!  Well, I think you look beautiful in the peach color sweater!  Your coloring glows.  I have a lot of jeans hanging in my closet now, but none of them are comfortable enough for me to wear all day long, so I need to have a try on sesh and donate the majority of them, then start over.  One thing I would love for you to talk about in one of the live sessions, is how to not look frumpy wearing the shorter jeans, when you can’t wear the better looking shoes.  That is my daily delima.  Most shoes with good arch support cost so much that I can’t have numerous pairs and styles.  Thanks!  Have a blessed weekend!

    1. You mean how to wear ankle length jeans with “comfort shoes” ? It might be better to wear a straight leg style that’s full length, but I’d have to see an example of the shoes to give you better advice. 🙂

      1. Thank you!  Wearing regular length straight leg jeans when I do need to wear my Asics athletic shoes is the smarter way to go.

  20. Love the sweater dress on you! Are you wearing a small?
Can’t get excited about the looser fit cropped jeans but I really liked the Viggos jeans on you. Might see if they make them without the distressing.  I’m 55 and don’t think like distressed on me. You have turned me on to the AG skinnies and I now own two pairs.
    Appreciate this post.

      1. I think you told the lady above small. She asked what size purple dress was. :). Anyway. I bought the maroon colored sweater dress Cyndi styled from loft awhile ago. Looks similar to yours and I love it. I wear it with black tights and black sock booties. Looks great. It has alittle different sleeve too which is fun. Thanks for great post. I hope skinnies don’t go out. Still love them.

  21. Love this post!  I like the 2nd pair of Levi’s you tried on. Very cute!  I like the distressed look.  It took me awhile to try them because I’m 50!  But Jo-Lynne is right.  It depends on how you style them. Love your try on sesh Jo-Lynne!!

  22. I am living in Vigoss almost full time…they feel like they are made for my shape, they hold theirs, and are always a great price point.

That said, I take fashion advice and am not in any position to give it.

Been mulling your intro to the white loafer trend…
The other day I hit a great sale and found a Steve Madden pair for under $20… so if it does hit…I’m ready…with a low risk investment!   Thanks for the tip ????

      1. Haha thx…then you may also appreciate this:

I tried the ripped jeans this year out of necessity:  I broke my kneecap this summer and found them to be a great, comfortable solution (just crossed into my upper 50’s).

My husband loved them…not the accountant reaction I was expecting.   But my dad was beside himself about them.   Kept jokingly asking if we needed financial help so I could afford clothes without holes in them.

        My family ????

        1. That is hysterical. My husband just looks at mine and shakes his head. ????

To be honest, I’m a bit of a contrarian. The more people tell me I shouldn’t wear them, the more I want to. ????

  23. Good morning Jo-Lynne
First off, 50 is just a number.  Many of us these days are rocking our 50’s.  Have been following you for a bit and you have shared some great pieces!  I, personally, will not pay for ripped jeans (just how I was raised LOL)
however; you look great in them, therefore wear them especially if they make you feel good about how you look.(again age is a number not a frame of mind).
Second, you look fantastic in dresses!  Please try to post more dresses:>.
Have a blessed day!  Keep on posting.

  24. Your sweater dress looks much more purple on you than on the Bloomies website where it looks more like a maroon color on my monitor.  The description says “eggplant” so I would assume it is really more of a deep purple than a red undertone?  Love it with the tall boots!  My 20 yo daughter has the straight crop Levis from Revolve and they look cute on her but I’m not a fan of the all cotton.  I did however get some Paige high waist straight crops that I love- and they are 50% off at Nordstrom!!  I’m only 5’3″ so I have to cuff them but I may get them hemmed- I feel like they should hit about 1/2-1 inch above the ankle bone

      1. Yes those are the ones!  I took my usual size unlike the Paige Hoxton high waist skinnies from the N. Sale where I had to size up one.

  25. Fun post!  Just to give some balance, I am older but like the torn jeans look.  There’s a limit, but the level of torn you wear (the AGs you love and the other things you try on) I think is cute.  I also love the lighter wash.  That dress is adorable on you, but I think much nicer looking with the tall boots and tights.  If you prefer short boots, I think I’d like tights with the short boots too.  The lavender sweater is gorgeous on you (I don’t think it would look good on me, but seeing it on you tempts me!).  Maybe I’m crazy, but I think the second pair of Levis is too big on you.  Either that, or it doesn’t fit right in the front.  I like the straight crop (on you and generally), or even a slighter wider leg crop (I have tried on a few pairs, and they were cute, but I couldn’t bite the bullet).  I’m still scratching my head on what tops to wear, so I look forwarding to seeing you try more of them on!  🙂

    1. I think the other thing too, with ripped jeans, is to know your audience. There are some places I don’t wear them because the people I’m with are super conservative or older or whatever. I don’t care what people think of my ripped jeans in general, but I didn’t wear them to the nursing home to visit my 100 y/o grandfather, for example. I could have, but on some level it felt disrespectful, lol.

I agree that tights with the short boots would have looked better.

Neither pair of Levis is too big – they just barely button. The 501 are more comfortable than the 505C but I am returning both. I don’t like the big rip on the 501 – it’s really gaping when I sit, and it’s high on the thigh. See, that’s where I draw the line with distressing. 😉 I also think they are both too baggy, and maybe slightly too long – which may be what you mean. I’m still ordering others and comparing leg opening and inseam lengths. 🙂

  26. I enjoyed the try on session. I have to agree Darleen Finnigan about the jeans! Had to wear too many because that was all I had and sometimes, patches on patches!!! LOL. Jo-Lynne, you are going to laugh, but I missed your weather report!! We dropped 40 degrees yesterday and had freezing rain which turned to 6 inches of snow here in Central Ohio. It seems like you are usually about a day behind us, so was wondering what your forecast or weather is. Love your blog altho I am 70. Want to try and listen in Wednesday! Sounds very interesting!

    1. Haha! Well, it is FREEZING here today. I think we’re about a day behind you. Yesterday it was 61 and poured rain all day, and it was lightly raining still when we went to dinner and still warm. The temps fell overnight, and with the low temps came a strong wind that is still howling. It’s gray and blustery, but no precipitation so I put on my big girl pants (or my warmest running pants, rather) and went out for a 2 mile run. BRRRR.

  27. I love the sweater dress, both with bare legs & booties and with tights & tall boots. I like that it is not too clingy. Did you notice any bagging in the seat after wearing it out in the evening?

  28. I loved all of it! I am almost 60 and love ripped jeans and raw hems! Funny to see you in “loose” jeans but they are cute! And I think your dress with the booties looked adorable. But, everything is adorable on you!

    1. I am 66 (my hubby says I could pass for 50)and wear ripped occasionally. All clothing is somewhat dependent on the occasion. If your mirror tells you “no”, listen to the wisdom of the mirror. I also have a rule, “if I need to ask if something looks good or ok, that would be a no, dont do it.

      1. Yes, that’s usually a good barometer! But sometimes I think we have to ignore that nagging doubt and try something new that feels a little out of our comfort zone at first. I’ve done that with a few things I ended up loving. The mirror is definitely helpful tho. And for me, taking a selfie and looking at the picture is more telling than just looking in the mirror, for some reason.

  29. Thanks for helping us by showing different looks. I’m kinda over the distressed jeans, I’ve been wearing them for years now but probably won’t be buying them again. I LOVE your smile, that’s the best thing any of us can wear don’t you think?

  30. I love the distressed look and I have several pair. I think they are cute as long as they don’t have huge holes in them. It gives the jeans some character.
I love the lavender sweater on you! Such a pretty color on you!

  31. Love your post today. I’m a 55 year old grandma and have one pair of slightly distressed jeans just to shake things up. The white shoes aren’t for me, but I think the Rebecca’s are cuter than the Pat Boone style. ????Love a sweater dress with tights! Very classy. Your fashion blog is my favorite!

    1. Pat Boone style. Bwahaha. Okay, that’s it. They’re going back. I’m going to order the RM – I don’t know if I’ll like them in the white as much as I like the black ones, but I’ve gotta try.

  32. I really enjoy your try on sessions.  I mostly shop online so seeing clothes on a real person is helpful, as is your commentary.
On a side note, I also follow a few bloggers from the UK and they have been wearing the straighter style jeans (like the Levi’s) for a while now. So I think the look may be here to stay. I personally like the look but it does mean a change in footwear. Mules, loafers and the sock boots seem to work well.

    1. Yep, they’re definitely “what’s next” with denim and pants… and I also agree that footwear is changing quickly to match. I’ll be curious to see if they replace skinnies or if they just become another option… like boyfriend jeans. They’re similar to boyfriend jeans, and those never totally took hold, ya know?

      1. Hope the trends don’t change too soon, I still need to get more wear out of my skinnies  and ankle booties.
Love the loafers that are trending now though. I have the Sam Edelman’s in leopard and I ‘d love to get some similar mules in white.

  33. First off, I love what you said about fashion vs personal style and trying new trends. Perfectly appropriate and spot on.

I have a pair of Vigoss jaggers from nearly two years ago that are still in fantastic shape and I still wear them weekly. I also rediscovered a black pair of ON rockstars I somehow managed to put in a donation pile. I slipped them on and wondered why in the world they got tossed, lol. The particular pair I have fit like a glove and do not bag out at all. Amazingly comfy…much more so than my LB pair.

And, lastly, I just had to chime in on the ripped jeans. You know I like distressing and rips, but I definitely leave the gaping holes and enormous thigh rips to the younger bunch! In fact, my AG jeans have a very small distressed area on the thigh that is losing threads and I plan to patch that from underneath asap. I just don’t like my skin showing above the knees. Anyway, I do think minimal distressing with modest placement is perfectly appropriate for women of any age. Yours are ALWAYS tasteful and something I would wear myself 😉

  34. I love the sweater dress! I like it much better with the taller boots. I need to do some hunting for taller boots, particularly suede. I’m not a fan of the ankle boots. It’s something about the heel that doesn’t work for me. I have a pair of ankle boots which are flat which I would wear with pants, but not a dress or skirt. Just not me.

I’ve learning more about style these past few years from you, and the other older fashion bloggers you’ve recommended. I think a lot of it is about figuring out what works with one’s body type. I love dresses from Talbots because they’re classic, made well, and usually look good on me. I feel taller wearing them vs. a skirt and blouse. However, I know other people prefer the skirt or pants because that works better on them.

Finally, I love the bigger earring trend! I find I gravitate towards bigger earrings because of my short hair and because I want to draw attention up. Not having much cleavage and not feeling comfortable with the cleavage I have makes me want to draw the eye elsewhere if that makes sense.

    1. It is DEFINITELY all about what works best on each woman’s unique body. Learning what works for you is so freeing, isn’t it? I can overlook so much that’s out there. Of course, I still get sucked into buying oversized tops. I know they’re not the most flattering, but they are cozy, and they don’t cling to any problem areas. 😉

  35. I personally think you always rock the ripped jeans Jolynne!  I think the key for women over forty is to keep the rips small,  and like you said, keep the rest of the outfit classic.
Also I laughed out loud at the comment about the white loafers!  Funny bc I’ve been skipping out on the flat mule trend because they remind me of an eighty year old mans slippers.

  36. Great try-on sesh!  I really loved the sweater dress with the tights and boots. I admire how you put yourself out there to show us what is trending.  I also like seeing new trends. I might not think they’re for me but never say never!
I don’t think the white shoes will be showing up in my spring wardrobe, but I didn’t think I’d warm up to the mules and I am.

Lots of comments on the distressed jeans. I’m a little too old for them (61 ????), but I absolutely love how they look on you! Keep doing what you’re doing and don’t let those who are a little too blunt in their comments get to you.

  37. The distressed jeans are perfect for you at your age and style.  If I were 15 years younger, I wouldn’t hesitate.  I try to be careful with trends as I am 60 and work with loads of cute young teachers, so I don’t want to look silly and like I’m trying too hard!  However, I take more chances with trends when I’m not at work, so that’s how I do it!

    1. I hear ya – that kind of plays into what I said to Susan. I try to take into account where I’m going and who I’ll be with. I definitely play it safer in certain situations and go for more trendy looks in others.

  38. Such a fun, informative read to enjoy on this wild, rainy Saturday afternoon.
One thing I have learned from your blog is that distressed denim keeps a 47 year old girl like myself from looking too stuffy. It is very important to me to look current and be a little unpredictable and distressed denim helps.
Also, the Sam Edelman white loafers with the gold buckle are TO DIE FOR …. in my opinion….

  39. I love this post JoLynne! You and Cyndi are definitely my personal stylist too! I like all of the jeans you are showing today. I am a little excited about the ankle crop flare. I have a curvy shape and these look flattering. I thought the exact same thing about 70’s mens dress shoes but I want to give them a try! Thank you for all you do. I love your blog

  40. Great post! It’s always so much fun to look at how things work or why they sometimes don’t. You look really cute in all these looks. On the jeans, I am 54 and I have two pair of distressed jeans, but mine don’t actually let any skin show through the holes. One pair actually has a sort of lining behind the holes, and the other pair just has two carefully placed, small holes. I think they look cute–at least I hope they do–but I don’t wear them all the time. As for Levi’s, I have worn them on and off basically forever, and can attest the waist is small. Like always. In fact, for some weird reason, if they size them in misses 8-10-12 sizes, I can go up one size and they fit great. If I try the 28-29-30 sizes, I’ve never been able to find any that fit. And the way those black ones stick out at the bottom is common with that brand. I sort of have a love/hate thing with Levi’s. My two cents about the white shoes is that I have never understood the hate for white shoes. It’s just a color, and it can look great with various outfits. I don’t think these loafers are for me, because I also associate them with 70’s men’s dress shoes (ha!), but I have to admit these look kind of cute now that I’m seeing them modeled. I guess it depends on what you put them with.

    1. Interesting about the Levi’s, although I got a pair of Rag & Bone in today and they do the same thing at the ankle! What is UP with that? So annoying b/c I liked them otherwise.

  41. That was a nice distraction! I like the purple top and cardi. Since I’m tall I’d like to see boots with lower heels. Thanks!

  42. The sweater dress looks great on you! So pretty and flattering. I have to say that I love my distressed jeans but like you I know my audience. I teach at a church based preschool and I won’t wear them to work. It’s getting hard to find a great pair of jeans that are not distressed ????. I was excited to read your Spring trends post yesterday. I bought a beautiful lavender top today that I can’t wait to wear.

  43. Hello from a newish reader, originally from Canada and currently working overseas.
Firstly, thanks for sharing all your “try-on sesh”. That was a lot of content to share. Secondly, the shoe trends you are sharing are something I have seen here overseas for awhile. They are finally appearing in North America. Finally, I’m looking forward to your Facebook chat next week, I’m 55 and appreciate your balanced view of fashion/trends/style (love de la Renta’s quote!).

  44. I so enjoy your try on sessions and your blog in general. They are so informative and helpful in choosing what to look for in fit and style. Thank you for giving your take on the new trends as well. I love the tender, understanding way you show us how to realistically wear trends that at first glance seem totally unwearable for the average person. For example, the white loafers actually look rather cute whereas a month ago I would have said “no way”. A few days ago you mentioned unboxing a Trunk Club box on Instagram Stories. I am not on Instagram and was wondering if you will share that on your blog. I love when you show us your items you receive and why they do or do not work. Hope I did not miss out! Thanks for all your effort and authoring my favorite blog!

  45. I enjoyed the commentary as much as the post! I will be turning 50 soon, and was surprised to learn so many of your readers are my age or older. You always seem to hit on my burning fashion questions, like “to wear hose or not to wear hose” and “where to find cute comfort shoes.” I value your opinion on these issues!

I never really understood the fascination with distressed jeans, but after following your blog for awhile I’ve come to like them. I just ordered the AG leggings today, and I’m fairly certain my 12-year-old daughter will be appalled that I’m wearing teenager clothes! LOL. Then my heart sank when I read they are probably soon going out of style. Now that I’m a regular follower, I’ll know this stuff before it’s too late next time! Ha!

I look forward to your blog and FB posts every day. You always look fabulous!

    1. Don’t worry about the AG going out of style… I think it will be a slow evolution. Fashion gurus have been saying skinnies are on their way out for years, but we don’t see to be able to give them up. 🙂 I’m still hoping to snag another pair of my favorite style at the sale price before they sell out.

  46. I wear distressed jeans, as long as there’s no big holes or the ones with big slits across across both knees ( I can’t handle the obvious fairness of the symmetry). I’m 46. Levi’s are awesome, I love the bog standard skinny style – I stock up whenever I’m in the US – and always get compliments on them. I don’t think those black mules are the most flattering, Pixi slippers springs to mind. The rust jeans + carry combo is way more flattering. The ankle boots with the sweater dress look awesome and VERY 2018. The long boots + that dress + opaques looks kind of not current ( i love tall boots but it’s either too covered up or has no point of definition or I don’t know….). This is a great post, good job you!

    1. Thanks, Lizzie. Where are you? I wonder if the long boots/sweater dress/opaque tights thing looks less current because you’re in an area where styles are a bit ahead of us here? I agree, it’s more current with the ankle boots, but I’ve never loved the ankle boots with dresses/skirts. Can’t quite put my finger on why.

      1. I’m in Australia so I don’t know that we are more fashion fwd here! (Lol) I generally don’t like the ankle boots + dress combo but when I saw the two looks one after the other the ankle boots looked more modern. May have been the bare legs? Gave the outfit some definition? Contrast?

        1. Interesting… I am not sure how Australia falls in the whole scheme of fashion trends. 🙂 I just love it that I can chat with someone on the other side of the globe. So cool! Yeah, the contrast of the bare legs works. I think I’d have liked a different style bootie, though. Something with more of the sock bootie look.

      2. Yes to the different ankle boot. Scrolling back through, the Levi’s jeans looked really good. Different shape, a modern silhouette, looked good. Australia does summer stuff well, beachy ( 40 deg C is forecast this week), tend not to have rules ( no white after Labor Day etc) but it’s a smaller market so there’s not always a super wide range. I love the US: Levi’s, ae jeans, ag jeans, running gear. I usually go home with all the running gear!

  47. I was excited to see you tried the Levis slimming skinnies, but was so surprised at the ankle openings! Mine are not like that…I have 2 pair and both “grab” the ankle….very strange.

  48. Tried some of the jeans with the wider bottom that were fringed hem — YUCK!  It was a such a bad look.  I agree the skinnier are better.  Sent them right back.  Back to my tried and true.  Thanks for all your try on sessions — make me realize that not everything works and that’s fine!

  49. You always look cute and put together. I like how you’re not afraid to post pictures even though you don’t like the outfit or the fit. Keeping it real. Speaking of keeping it real…..the white loafers remind me of Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon vacation movies so I just can’t! Not trying to insult you.

    1. Haha, I know, I had someone else post a clip from that movie when I posted the shoes in FB or Insta… so funny. I really can’t unsee that so I think I’m sending them back, although I DO like them… I’m conflicted. Maybe if the buckle were silver, I’d like them better.

  50. Wow, Jo-Lynne, you rocked that sweater dress with tights and tall boots! I enjoyed this try-on sesh and what surprises me the most is that it appears that distressed jeans are not going anywhere. I kind of thought that they had run their course but apparently not. The straight leg cropped jeans you show look good on you. I like them MUCH better than boyfriend jeans which I think look sloppy. The jeans you show also look good with the mules (or with flats) but I can’t imagine wearing them with booties. I look forward to you showing us that trend. Great post!

  51. I like Vigoss jeans. For the price they are decent quality and feel good on. They also have a lot of stretch which I like. I do need to size down, I’ve found they do stretch out a bit with wear. I bought a pair of them a few years ago and they have held up – I still have the first pair I bought. I’ve never been able to wear Old Navy jeans – they are itchy/scratchy. I always end up leaving them in my closet until I finally get rid of them.
My husband looked at me like I was crazy when I ordered a pair of distressed jeans. He actually posted on FB about how I paid so much money for ripped up jeans…..my friends quickly backed me up. He is still confused about it. ????
I love my distressed jeans although I can’t wear them to work – I live in them on the weekends.

  52. The comments are certainly lively on this post! Glad to see you are sending the Levis back. They do look a bit too baggy on you. Curious to see how the others look once you get them. I like the look of the Paige jeans, however cropped in that brand will be full length on me lol! I am hoping to add a lighter wash straight leg jean to my closet for spring.
