How to Wear Velvet Pants for the Holidays

Greetings, friends! Welcome back to 25 Days of Winter Fashion! One of the most wearable trends this year is velvet, and I’ve been wanting to incorporate it more into my wardrobe. A velvet dress is perfect for a company holiday party, I love the idea of a velvet cami under a leather jacket with jeans for a girls’ night out, and velvet pumps are a great way to jazz up a date night outfit.

You know how I love a great pair of jeans, so when I saw these velvet pants at LOFT, I knew I needed them in my life.

We're talking about how to wear velvet pants for the holidays, and I'm wearing washed velvet pants in faded rust with an off-white sweater and nude pumps.

SALE ALERT >> 50% off EVERYTHING at LOFT plus FREE SHIPPING on all orders with code VERYMERRY.

The entire LOFT website is 50% off right now, which brings these pants down to $35! They come in grey and this pretty salmon-pink they call faded rust. I ordered both, and you can see me wearing the grey ones in a similar outfit here on Instagram. I thought the pink was fun for something different, and it pairs beautifully with white and winter white.

As you can see, these are a little big on me. I’ve put on a few pounds lately, and LOFT pants in my regular size 28 have been getting snug, so I ordered these in a size 29, but they’re a little big. All that to say, they pretty much run true to size; I’m just in between sizes at the moment. #justkeepingitreal

These pants have a 30″ inseam, which is longer than the ankle-length jeans I normally wear. I tried them with flats, and they looked a little dumpy, so I opted for the pumps. I think if they were a size smaller and a little tighter in the calf, they’d look better with flat shoes.

This is the Ann Taylor wool cashmere turtleneck I featured once before. It’s currently marked down to $69 PLUS 50% off. It’s a little boxy, but it has pretty details and it comes in several really nice colors. They’re selling out fast, so if you’ve had your eye on it, grab one while you still can!

These sunnies are old, but I thought they worked well with this outfit. The matte gold frames and pink gradient lenses compliment the outfit (and hide my tired eyes!)

FYI, Ray-Ban has free overnight shipping (and free returns) so there’s still time to place an order and get it for Christmas. As much as I love my Maui Jims, no one does an aviator quite like Ray-Ban. My only regret with these is not getting polarized lenses. That was an option, but I didn’t know any better at the time.

I love how the gold clutch gives this look a bit of a festive flair. I was wishing I had taupe suede pumps or a nude pair without such yellow undertones, but these seemed the best choice of the shoes in my closet.

These are an old pair of Via Spigas, and I found a few left on Amazon. They’re incredibly comfortable and a great quality shoe, but the sizes are rather picked over so I recommend checking out the Sam Edelman Hazel pumps if you’re looking for a good pair of nude pumps. I have those in black and a few other colors, and they’re also quite comfortable and have a nice look about them.

Here’s a close-up of the clutch, and I’m wearing CND Midnight Swim on my nails.

It was so cold when we shot this look . . . literally 23 degrees with a gusty wind. My hands were frozen. I can’t believe they actually look normal in this picture.

I think this outfit makes a fun non-traditional holiday look for a casual party or even Christmas Day. Obviously if you’re cooking, you may not want to wear a white sweater and heels, but if you’re a guest in someone’s home or just like to dress up a bit to open presents, this outfit is comfortable but turned up a notch from your typical jeans and sweater outfit.

  1. Cute outfit!  I have the same problem with Loft pants.  When I gain a few pounds I have to go to the size 29, but I never gain enough for them to fit really well so I feel a bit dumpy in them.  Regardless, you look great and the cream sweater is really pretty on you.  Love the gold clutch with the outfit, too.

    1. Interesting! Glad to know I’m not alone. I have the same problem with Halogen brand. I have to stay under a certain number on the scale for their clothes to fit right. If I gain 5 lbs, I’m in between sizes and neither works for me. You’d think that would be enough incentive to keep those pesky pounds off, but nope! #Ilovefood

  2. Really pretty. I start to gravitate to lighter colors right after the holidays…yearning for spring and lightness I guess! What size are you wearing in that sweater? It’s a great price so I’m thinking about it.

  3. I almost bought some velvet pants last year, but I was totally worried that they would get worn on the seat area because of friction…..eeek!!
So you’ll have to let me know if you notice that with these.
But the color is fabulous, Jo-Lynne!! Definitely more fun than black!!

  4. Love this outfit!  I bought the black velvet pants from Loft and they are so comfortable but I’m a little stumped as to what to wear with them this season, any suggestions?

  5. Great outfit. I too have put on 2-3 lbs and feel my clothes don’t fit exactly right so I hear you. Ha. But tis the season. You look great so just enjoy holidays and don’t worry about it.

  6. Fabulous, wearable-in-real-life style is one of the reasons your blog is my favorite! This outfit would work for so many of the things I have coming up…my holiday celebrations are all very close to Christmas this year…
I love that you help women look and feel fabulous with this blog. It has been a great asset to me. I feel a lot more confident since I started reading your posts. Even though I
sometimes still get it wrong, style wise, the daily advice and honesty here help me correct things and not judge myself so harshly..
    Grateful!

  7. While the pink is sweet, I prefer the grey ones in your Instagram. They seem to fit you better. I love the sweater you were wearing in that pic, as well.
I wonder how well they will wash up. Cold water, inside out, hang to dry? You wouldn’t want to iron them either, as you will then have shiny velvet. Could try steaming them. Just thinking out loud. Ha!

    1. They’re the exact same pants and they fit the same, but I think the grey color is more flattering somehow. I do so much grey, though, I wanted to show something different for this post. 🙂 Also, the other sweater is more form fitting so that makes the whole look more flattering.

It says you can tumble dry low on the tag, so I think you’d want to do that to keep them soft. I might try hanging them for a few hours and then tossing them in the dryer for 15 min to soften them up… although they’re longer and a little bigger than I like, so I may just wash and dry and hope they fit better afterwards! 🙂

  8. Thank you for keeping the styles current, but wearable. It’s easy to get inspiration from your outfits and not feel too far out there, like I’m trying too hard. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family. Blessings!

  9. I love those pants….I might have to order a pair in that beautiful shade of pink! I think they would also look great with the gray version of that sweater…..I love pink and grey together. You look beautiful, as always!

  10. Speaking of gold clutches . . . I wanted a gold clutch for my son’s recent wedding and found the one at the following link at Amazon. I assumed it would be gaudy and poorly constructed for the price, but I was pleasantly surprised! It’s a nice muted gold and includes both a wrist and a shoulder strap. It is evenly topstitched and comes in a protective sleeve. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a nice clutch to use on special occasions that won’t break the bank! 11. I have those ordered in black and can’t wait for them to get here. I love that color and it’s beautiful with the sweater. You’d never know you were freezing to look at the pics. ????????

    1. Ha. It was DREADFULLY cold. I was like HURRY UP! And I also have a bum ankle so shouldn’t be walking in heels so I was being very careful. LOL. I can’t believe I didn’t look totally awkward and uncomfortable, but I do like how the pix turned out. 🙂
