Festive Tops to Pair with Jeans this Holiday Season

I’ve shared a few holiday party outfits lately, but I’m getting a lot of requests for more casual holiday looks. I’ll be shooting a couple of outfits that fit into that scenario later this week, but for now I wanted to round up some tops that I recommend considering if you’re looking for something fresh to add to your closet. Any of these would look great with jeans and pumps or booties for a casual holiday get together.

And honestly, any plain top will do — all you have to do is throw on pumps and some sparkly jewelry to take jeans and a neutral sweater from the preschool pick-up line to a casual holiday party. For example, I wore this outfit to our ladies’ Christmas Tea on Saturday afternoon.

Grey Cowl Neck Sweater with jeans and L.K. Bennett Oxblood Suede Pumps

The grey cowl sweater is as old as the hills (as my mother would say!) It was a Banana Republic purchase, and I’ve kept it for almost 10 years because it’s a classic and it fits so well. It doesn’t have any sparkle or embellishment, but I added my favorite raw hem legging ankle jeans, oxblood suede pumps (yes, they’re a deep burgundy, not black) and gold drop earrings with the Bordeaux tiger’s eye. The earrings and pumps elevate the look beyond my usual everyday jeans and sweater outfit, but I still felt comfortable at the casual gathering.

Blouses and tops with embellishments are also a great way to make a pair of jeans look festive, and velvet is trending right now, so swapping out blue jeans for velvet jeans or the sweater for a velvet shell and leather jacket would be fun too.

Here’s a roundup of some tops to consider. I’ve ordered a few of these already, and I’m hoping to shoot a couple of casual holiday looks this week, but I realize time is of the essence so hopefully this post is helpful.

Festive Tops to Pair with Jeans this Holiday Season

I think the key to making these looks work is accessories and shoes. It’s easy to forget those items and just buy a new top, and then you go to get dressed and realize the overall look is missing something. I’ve been there! Most of us have plenty of tops in our closets, but we may need a nudge to pick up a new statement necklace or a pair of fun shoes.

For example, these jeweled suede loafers are fun, and they look comfortable too. And how about these jeweled bow suede flats? Another pair of flats that are super fun are these embellished red suede flats.

Of course, you know me. I love to throw on a pair of pumps with jeans to jazz up an outfit. I think these pink velvet pumps would be awesome with any grey sweater and jeans combo. Who said only red was festive? Not that there’s anything wrong with red… these red suede Marc Fisher pumps are awesome and would also be fun for Valentine’s Day. I also love these sequin pumps — they would jazz up most of the tops shown above. These glitter pumps are similar, and if it’s not too terribly cold where you are, these metallic ankle strap sandals are fabulous.

  1. I actually have the plaid boucle scarf with tags still attached hanging in my closet to return to Nordstrom. Happy to sell to anyone who wants this item! Nordstrom price was $29.

  2. I think you look great in your heel pumps with outfits but I just can’t do it.  I don’t even own a pair anymore.  I just feel silly when I where them with jeans.  I do however wish I had a pair for dresses in the Spring in Summer.

  3. Thanks for sharing these casual holiday looks. This time of year, I like a fun top, even if it’s just to wear with jeans to meet friends for lunch. Add a pair of nice shoes and I’ve got a cocktail hour outfit to wear to stop by a friend’s.

  4. I love that you said any casual top in your closet will do….was wondering what to wear to a party Saturday, pulled out a favorite sweater and a blingy necklace, skinny jeans and booties and I am ready…plus I’ll be super comfortable, and warm…I always seem to be cold. Thanks for your inspiration!

  5. Many great tips in this post. I have that white Loft sweater and it is soooo comfy. I didn’t want to take it off when I tried it on.
