Fermented Cod Liver Oil for Acne

Cod Liver Oil for Acne Treatment

I read something recently that made a lot of sense — a natural treatment for acne that might actually work!

Fermented cod liver oil! (This is the one that I buy.)

I read it somewhere, and then I did a quick google search and found lots of people proclaiming the benefits of cod liver oil as an acne treatment.

Not just any cod liver oil, though — fermented cod liver oil.

It makes sense, if you think about it. Besides the fact that cod liver oil seems to be good for just about anything that ails us (from ADD to memory loss to joint aches and pains to weight gain), it is chock full of vitamin A. If vitamin A is what most quality skincare products are using these days to help fight acne from the outside, doesn’t it make sense that it would be beneficial to acne prone skin when taken internally as well??

From what I read, it seems that fermented cod liver oil is one of the best natural sources of vitamin A and D as well as Omega 3 fatty acids. It is the fermentation that is key, though. Otherwise it’s just another synthetic supplement that may or may not get assimilated into our bodies.

Most of us are deficient in vitamins A and D and Omega 3 these days. Taking a fermented cod liver oil supplement is probably the one best thing you can do for your overall health and wellness.

I’ve tried to get in the habit of taking it and giving it to my family, but we are often really lax about it. But with a son going into adolescence (and acne season), I have renewed my commitment to make sure we are all taking our cod liver oil. I’d love to see if this makes a difference and helps him avoid the acne that tends to plague so many adolescents these days.

Of course, cutting out processed foods and eating a wholesome diet is key here as well. I do the best I can to keep good quality foods in the house, but the older my kids get the less control I have when they’re not under my roof. But that’s a different issue altogether!

Tell me if you’ve heard this, tried this, what you think!

  1. I’ve been taking regular fish oil pills for about a year now – I started taking them for my back and joints after a car accident, but I have definitely noticed overall benefits, including better skin. I’ve also been feeding them to my husband 😉 When I was off of it for awhile traveling I did notice the overall quality of my skin to be less smooth and supple. I haven’t made the switch to fermented oil yet, although I intend to when we’re done the giant bottle I bought some time ago!

My father is a Dr. of Traditional Chinese Medicine and he also recommends cod liver oil as a supplement. It’s good for a variety of things, skin included.

I definitely prefer the pills, though, over a spoonful of the liquid (even if it is orange flavoured or whatever they do to it!) Otherwise I can taste fish all day… 😉

  2. I haven’t heard of this before, but I’m definitely running out to get some. I have a 16 year old boy, too, and he has been hit hard by acne. Plus, I know I need Omega 3 fatty acids, because I intake 0 with my normal diet. Thanks so much for sharing, can’t wait to try it out!

  3. Do you know whether it is as effective as a capsule as taking it in liquid form? I tried the liquid form for a while but could not get it down…

    1. Did you try flavoured FLCO? I got the Green Pastures orange flavour and I have no problems. A little fishy taste but mostly orange.

  4. We’ve always used the liquid form. The “cinnamon tingle” flavor is the least offensive, although it sounds gross. I feel like my son’s acne is triggered by sugar. We definitely notice a difference based on his food intake. I know it’s different with everyone so that may not be the case for others. I’ve been wondering that since CLO is recommended for depression, if it could help with general teenage angst/depression. I know that good old fashioned hard work and exercise makes a huge difference in my son’s general mood and outlook on life. During sports seasons and during the summer when he’s working outside a lot, he’s much happier!! But I’m wondering if during the winter months, if he could have benefited from some regular doses.

Anyway, my 2 y.o. will let me squirt the liquid down his throat and then follow up with a sip of juice. He has eczema (still trying to figure out the source of that) and The CLO definitely helps calm the rash when we remember to take it on a regular basis. I really wish I could remember to take it more regularly myself. I’m curious about the pill vs. liquid question too. The liquid was what was originally recommended to us so I’ve stuck with that.

    1. I think sugar is definitely a large cause of acne, in addition to hormones of course. I am sure the CLO would help with depression and mood swings. Think about it… kids are eating the worst right at the time when they need the most stabilizing diet. It’s so sad what we’ve done to our generation. 🙁

  5. I have been wanting to buy this brand, as I need to start taking cod liver oil! Are the capsules easy to swallow? I have alot of supplements I already take, so I thought about trying the liquid just so I have less pills to swallow. Have you tried the oil and if so how does it go down?

    1. They go down okay but they do tend to return . . . if you know what I mean. 😉 I try to take them at bedtime so I don’t notice it so much. The kids don’t really like them but they tolerate them. I have not tried the oil. I have tried the chocolate stuff and it is NASTY.

      1. Thanks! I guess I will try the capsules. My naturpath told me that when taking fish oil that if you burp them back up it means something else is going on that needs fixed, but this might have just been the kind she had me taking. I guess I need to do a little research on that!

  6. My family takes this as well – cinnamon tingle for us! I have not noticed it fixing any acne on my part – but it is a lifesaver for my daughter and hubby. My daughter gets moody when she isn’t taking this regularly and it has kept us much healthier this past winter. I will normally get a cold every 2 months or so in the winter but not this year and I don’t even take it ever day. I just really wish it was cheaper than it is. It is really expensive – which is my biggest reason for me personally not taking it every day.

  7. Fermented cod liver oil was one of the MANY natural things I tried to deal with my acne, but it didn’t work. But that’s not surprising, because the only thing that did work was a big dose of Accutane. I always think trying natural alternatives is better than taking heavy medications -especially with the cost and the side effects.

  8. My mother swears by this, she had me taking when I was right out of college. I haven’t taken in awhile, but I think I’m going to start back up!

  9. I noticed your post on fermented cod liver oil did not mention the smell? Coinicidence, or intentional exclusion? 😉

  10. I take the syringe and shoot ½ tsp at a time down my throat. If I get it on my throat, it burns like crazy! I totally bypass the taste doing it this way. I take 2 Tsp. A day and have found it to be everything I was needing for my skin, vit D absorption, menstrual pain, hair and overall well being. Anyone ever try the coconut oil, butter and fish oil blend from Green Pastures?

    1. I keep meaning to buy that but I still have a ton of the capsules left. I do not take them regularly, although I know I should. I am horrible at remembering to take supplements.

  11. i just started using cod liver oil / butter blend how long do u think it takes to see a difference in the skin? have u or anyone u know of tried the skate liver oil by green pastures ? if so do u think that is a good addtion to the cod liver oil ? thanks!

    1. I give any new diet change or addition a month to really see or feel results. And of course, the results may be subtle. Since I didn’t use CLO for acne, I can’t really say, but I do know that reducing sugars and carbs helps my occasional adult acne from surfacing.
