Fall Fashion Trend: Cocoon Cardigan

Today I'm styling a cocoon cardigan for fall. Throw it on over a white tee, add skinny jeans and ankle boots, and you've got a stylish and comfortable fall outfit!

One of my favorite fall trends this year is the cocoon cardigan. I’ve always liked a long cardigan because they’re so cozy and comfortable and easy to wear, but sometimes they can be bulky and unflattering. The cocoon cardigan has a lovely curve that is more figure flattering but every bit as comfortable as the drapey styles that have been trending for the past couple of years.

This is the Leith Shawl Cocoon Cardigan, marked down to $48 on the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It sold out quickly, but I have noticed the inventory fluctuating and right now it is available in the Burgundy Stem in L and XL. Keep an eye on it because as customers make returns, it might be available in other colors and sizes. The #NSale ends on Sunday night. If you do manage to snag one, I recommend sizing down.

I also like this Knit Cocoon Cardigan for $78 and this Cashmere Kimono Cardigan that is currently on sale for $98. I have that one in the grey, and it is sooo scrumptious and soft.

I’m wearing my favorite white t-shirt (also included in the #NSale.) I recommend sizing down in this piece as well. It’s such a great layering piece that I also ordered it in Black and Beige Rainy Day. The great thing about this shirt is you can wear it now with your shorts and summer skirts, and then you can layer it under cardigans and jackets this fall.

I’m wearing my DL1961 Emma Legging Jeans. For those who read my premium denim comparisons yesterday, these jeans have the 29″ inseam that I prefer. They’re midrise with a 8 1/4″ front rise and a 10″ leg opening. I practically live in these jeans. They’re so comfortable and flattering.

I cuffed them in a large single cuff. In the above pictures, I think it was cuffed too high so I adjusted it for the pictures below. I was working without a full length mirror while we were in Maine, so it was hard to get my looks just right.

These are the BP. Tandem Ankle Boots, and they’re on sale for $79. These are such a great value — super comfortable, on trend, and they won’t break the bank. I do recommend treating them, though, before wearing. I stupidly walked through wet grass, and now mine have marks on them. I’m hoping a suede cleaner will fix them right up.

I added large hoop earrings and a long necklace to help break up the front of the t-shirt. This Nadri pendant would be gorgeous on this outfit. I’m also wearing a stack of Alex and Ani bangles. (Shocker!!!) I know, I wear these all the time, but they go with everything and add some bling without looking fussy.

I love how the cocoon cardigan updates my favorite casual fall outfit formula. I’ll definitely be adding a few of these to my fall wardrobe this year.

  1. Love this outfit! Living on the Gulfcoast, it will be at least October before I need a cardigan! But I want this one???? Fall is my favorite season!

  2. Happy Anniversary! Jo-Lynne, I really like the cardigan and the look of the whole outfit! I think the longer cardigans are a great replacement for coats in areas where it doesn’t get bitterly cold.

More transporting stuff to our future home this weekend, so not much rest in store. Have a blessed weekend!

  3. Adore this look! That cardigan looks so great on you. I pretty much love everything about it..the color, the shape, the coziness..it’s a shame they never fully restocked them. I think it’s the first thing I put in my cart on early access and one of the only things I haven’t debated. It is the perfect fall piece in my opinion!

  4. I’m a cardigan addict—probably because I’m always cold—and the shape of this one is truly great!!
At first I was going to say I liked the jeans cuffed more so they didn’t get interrupted by the boots—but looking back, I really think it looks fine either way. I doubt any normal person would look at them and think they look bad!!

    1. Yeah, they’re fine. I always struggle with boots that are higher in front, as these are. From the front, looking down on them, I thought the cuff was totally getting lost in the front, but when I cuffed them higher, they look a little awkward from behind. I think I’d have seen that in a full-length mirror, but it’s hard to style an outfit without one! LOL.

These jeans are an inch longer than most ankle jeans – which I love for wearing with flats, but when I want to cuff them, it’s a lot of material. This is why I don’t care for the ankle boot trend. It’s complicated!

  5. I already have that cardigan! So excited about wearing it once the temps drop…November, maybe! So excited for my TB sandals to arrive. Why, of why, did I wait to long? I’ll be able to wear them forever down here. More 100 temps expected today…ugh!

  6. I love that cardigan! I bought it too and cannot wait to wear it! Cold weather is my favorite so I can’t wait for summer to end and cooler temps to be here so I can pull out the sweaters and boots!

  7. I love the style and color of your cocoon cardigan. I didn’t know they could look so cute but comfy.
Happy anniversary, Jo Lynne! We share the same anniversary date but mine is double yours. I guess that kinda gives away my age. Lol

  8. This style and color are so pretty on you! I have a couple of pairs of boots that are tricky when it comes to how to wear my jeans with them. I’ve been trying the large cuff more since I saw it on you last fall. 🙂

  9. Love the cardigan on you! I ordered the cashmere cocoon cardigan in black from N, but returned it because the sleeves were 3/4. I have long arms (most tops become 3/4 on me) so they hit me at the elbows and looked . . . weird. And honestly, with short sleeves, it was a tiny bit itchy. I SO wanted the cardigan, but made myself return it. I’m trying hard to only buy pieces I LOVE. I’m keeping my eye out for the right one. Happy anniversary!

  10. I love this outfit from head to toe! I, too, have a difficult time with the whole jean cuff / bootie thing.
Happy, happy Anniversary to you and your husband!

  11. This is such a great fall look! I work from home and live in Wisconsin. Do you have any suggestions for how to pair the cardigan with a coat for when it’s frigid here?

    Happy Anniversary!

  12. Congratulation on your wedding day!
Jo-Lynne, thanks for all your thoughts on fashion which is a great help to find the right apparel having a cute outfit and style. Especially when y’re describing so accurately like on the jean yesterday.
I’m following your and Cindy’s blog for some time and I really enjoy it. Actually I find clothes over here in Germany similar to those you present and recommend on your blog. I feel much more sure buying the right apparel. And most important I’ve fun in mind.
Have a nice dinner tonight or tomorrow night,
    Jeanne-Alice

  13. I love the shape and style of this cardigan! Like you said, it’s very flattering, and what I love about cardigans is you can pair them with a lot of different tops and bottoms. I can’t wait for the cooler cardigan weather! Thanks for sharing!

  14. I have a question and I’m sorry if you’ve already answered it for someone else. I am 5’1 and having trouble wearing boyfriend jeans with booties. I guess it looks funny to me because I’m so short. Do you have any tips for us short girls when wearing these with booties? thanks!

    1. Hey Lori. I think it is tough, to be honest, to pull off the booties when you are petite. I am 5’5″ and long-legged, and I still feel like booties cut off my legs at an awkward spot. My best tip is to stick with a monochromatic look – so your booties are the same color as your pants, and then it is one long line — like I did with the black payless booties and black jeans. If you’re doing blue jeans, then stick with a boot that is close to the jeans, like if they are dark wash, go with dark brown or dark grey or black, and if they are light wash, go with the taupe like I have in this post. Also, tucking them in as I did in this post is more elongating than the cuff. When you cuff them, you definitely shorten the leg. Oh, another idea – choose boots with a lower shaft, like the ones Deborah styled today. I hope that helps!
