Exploring Lexington, Virginia with Kids

exploring lexington va

On our way to my parents’ home in Roanoke for Easter, we stopped in Lexington to grab a bite of lunch and perhaps see a bit of the town.

After eating at a tasty little bistro on the main street of town, we stopped into the Visitor’s Center to see what there is to do. The answer, as it turns out, is a lot.

We decided to tour the Stonewall Jackson House. My kids, ages 8, 11 and 14, were attentive and polite throughout the entire 30-minute tour, and not once did I spy an electronic device. That in and of itself is amazing. But I was surprised by how interested they were in the history.

They had so much fun, we decided to return the next day and explore this historic city nestled in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains.

Only 2.5 square miles, Lexington, Virginia is home to two prestigious colleges: Washington & Lee and Virginia Military Institute, giving it the charm and character of a college town times two. But it’s also chock full of historic landmarks and opportunities to sightsee, making it a great little day trip if you’re ever in the area. Not only that, but the Virginia Safari Park (which we visited on our way home) and Natural Bridge are just a few miles away.

We decided to start our day in Lexington by taking a carriage tour and getting the lay of the land, so to speak. (That’s my mom standing next to me. You’d never guess, right??)

It’s a fun town to explore by carriage, although it’s small enough that the walking tour is pretty doable, even for young kids. We did both.

My favorite part was riding through the neighborhoods and gawking at the gorgeous old homes. I loved that they aren’t massive, just lovely historic homes owned and cared for by ordinary people.

My 14-year-old son was most interested in seeing VMI and more specifically, the VMI Museum, which is free to the public. I believe there was a donation box if you are so inclined.

We also enjoyed seeing the Lee Chapel and Museum, although I don’t seem to have any photos.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day. It could have been warmer, but the crab apple trees were in bloom, and we definitely took advantage of the photo opps.

And just to prove my husband was there too…

If you ever find yourself driving down the I-81 corridor through southwestern Virginia, consider taking a day or two to explore Lexington and the surrounding area. You can find out more on LexingtonVirginia.com.
