DIY Ikat Easter Eggs

Today I’m swapping blogs with my friend Kristin from Bon Bon Rose Girls. I’ll be over on her site today sharing my new Strawberry Donuts recipe, and she is sharing a fun springtime craft — DIY Ikat Easter Eggs! Please make her feel at home.

I’m elated to be with you lovely readers here at Jo-Lynne’s blog today! With Easter coming up, I thought it would be fun to share an Easter egg DIY. I’m somewhat of a fashion fanatic and ikat prints have always been a favorite of mine. Would you believe they look just as fabulous on eggs?!?

For my ikat eggs, I used painter’s tape. Painter’s tape doesn’t create a water tight seal, so it allows a bit of water in while the eggs are being dyed, which creates the desired ikat effect.

Painters Tape

Step 1: Simply start by boiling your eggs. We eat organic brown eggs at home, but as Megan found out, they don’t dye well, so use the white ones for this project.

Step 2: Apply the painter’s tape to your egg. Feel free to play around with different patterns! This project, by no means, requires precise application. I wanted to share something with you that you could do with your kids. Creativity is the name of the game here…not perfection!

Step 3: Prepare the egg dye according to the package’s instructions. Some egg dye allows you to use vinegar or water…I find that vinegar produces better color.

Step 4: Dye your eggs. For extra saturated hues like mine, leave your eggs in for at least ten minutes.

Step 5: Allow your eggs to dry a bit and then remove the tape. They can be slightly wet when you remove the tape as that just adds to the ikat effect.
