Burlap & Lace DIY Cutlery Pockets

Summer is in the air! I don’t know about you, but we love to celebrate the warmer weather and the longer days by taking our meals outdoors.

Hi, it’s Tonya and I’m back with a fun outdoor dining craft project — DIY cutlery pockets out of burlap and lace.

I’m not a huge fan of plastic utensils and paper napkins. I prefer re-usable items for outdoor entertaining and picnics.

These fun burlap pockets are a great way to keep all of the items you need for a meal together. You could also include other items such as chopsticks, metal skewers for s’mores, and a straw depending on what you are serving. They are perfect for backyard barbecues, picnics, summer concerts in the park, and outdoor entertaining. The best part is that they take just minutes to whip up.

What you need:

  • burlap
  • sewing machine
  • lace
  • scissors

Lay out what you are going to include in your pocket to get an idea of the pocket size you will need.

Allow for a 5-8mm seam around the sides and bottom when cutting. You will need two pieces of burlap per pocket.

Lay a piece of lace over the top of each side of the pocket and sew it into place.

Place both pieces of burlap together, ensuring the lace is on the outside, and sew a seam down each side and along the bottom.

I quite like the frayed edges of the burlap, but you could always turn it inside out if you like.

You can also make these fun cutlery pockets out of oilcloth, which I plan on doing as it gets closer to summer.

Enjoy dining outdoors!
