Cropped Straight Released Hem Jeans

Good morning, friends. Happy Thursday! We’re almost to the weekend, so cheers to that! Today I have an easy, breezy weekend casual look to share with you!

Cropped flares are one of the biggest trends going this spring, but it’s a bandwagon I swore I was not going to climb on. I like a good bootcut jean, but I wear them mostly with heels so they elongate the line of the leg and make me look taller and thinner. The cropped flare seems to defeat that purpose since it cuts off your leg above the ankle. (So I said…)

We all know that it is a woman’s prerogative to change her mind, so I am not ashamed to tell you that I happened upon these cropped straight released hem jeans a few weeks ago during a Shopbop sale, and I ordered them on the spot.

They aren’t a flare, but they almost read as one, and I thought it might be a nice compromise. As it turns out, I really like these jeans. I feel like I’m able to participate in the trend without the extreme flare.

I also really love the released hem detail on these, and the quality of the denim is great. It’s very thick and mostly cotton, so they don’t bag out at all.

The brand is Current Elliott, and yes, they are spendy, but you know me and my premium denim. I’m willing to pay more for the fit and the look. Of course, I always recommend buying them on sale, and these are currently 25% off at Nordstrom. (It’s also Triple Points at Nordstrom till May 7!)

There’s a similar pair at Bloomingdales at a deeper discount, but the sizes are very limited. The sizing for this brand runs similar to AG. I have the size 28. They are snug, but they do give a little and form to your body as you wear them.

If you want the look for less, Kut from the Kloth makes a pair that are quite similar for $79. Someone commented yesterday on my Instagram that she has them and loves them. I do find that Kut tends to stretch out as you wear them, so you may want to size down in those.

This top is pretty simple, but I like the notched detail on the neckline, and I thought it was cute for throwing on with jeans and Converse. It has a nice drape and is easy to wear. For size reference, I have the small.

I wish I’d thought to style this outfit with my white denim jacket on top, but I was focused more on featuring the jeans. Layering a white jacket on top would add interest and also warmth to this outfit! I was a little chilly wearing this yesterday.

I like that this top doesn’t have that curved hemline (hooray!) and the split step hem makes it easy to wear untucked or front tucked, whichever you prefer. I like the length of this one when it’s untucked, so I just left it that way.

The length of your shirt is key to creating proper balance and proportion in an outfit, so it pays to try a few different styles and figure out what works best for you.

In addition to the olive stripe that I have, this top also comes in red, and they make it in solid colors too. I actually ordered the solid grey as well. They’re all on sale for $29.50.

Since this is such a casual look, I kept my accessories simple with these beaded hoops and my Alex and Ani bangles, and I carried a grey bucket bag.

I wore this outfit for most of the day yesterday. It’s comfortable and easy to wear, but I also felt cute and on trend with my new cropped flares straight jeans.

  1. I know what you mean about changing your mind about styles!! There are quite a few I was never going to wear like distressed denim, capris, OTS shirts…..ha ha–and now I have them all!!
But these really read as almost ankle pants because they really don’t seem to flare much! And I think we’ve gotten used to the look about seeing our legs chopped off???
Looking good, Jo-Lynne!! Thanks for keeping it real!

  2. Totally love the outfit!!!! It’s me all the way!!! Ihave several pairs of Kut the Kloth jeans so will give them a try. Thanks again for showing this-much appreciated ????!!!!!

  3. I love the straight hem on the top! I’ve actually resorted to having some of my tops altered to remove the curved hem. The bonus is that it shortens the T. So many of the tees are too long that I feel dumpy in them– and I’m 5’8″ and well-endowed. I have been trying different tucks, but I live in a rural town and I think people think I just forgot to tuck my shirt in completely. LOL.

    1. LOL, I honestly think that’s the way it looks. It is cute from the front, but from all other angles, it is weird. I cannot wait for it to go out of stye and for more fitted shirts to return. This one is a nice happy medium.

  4. This outfit looks so cute on you! Do you measure your waist and size down or how do you get your accurate measurement without having to order multiple pairs of pants? What size shirt are you wearing? Thanks for sharing this!

    1. Hi Lori, I’ve learned over the years that I’m usually a 28 or 29 (6 or 8 in American sizing) so I sometimes order one of each, or if I’m familiar with the brand, I will gamble and order my regular size. Most retailers offer free (or inexpensive) return shipping so if it doesn’t work out, I just send back and re-order.

The shirt is a size small. I meant to mention that, but I guess I forgot. I’ll update my post. 🙂

  5. I thought I would never wear those either Jo-Lynne! I love the way they look on you so I may have to try them. I don’t think I would go for the really flared ones though. That would probably not look good on me. These are perfect!

  6. These look great. Saves me rolling the hem on my other jeans. Thanks for sharing. Love the purse and shoes too. I am going to look for some of those shoes when we are down in Montana next month.

  7. I really like your style, it is more casual and workable for me. I also have asked a few questions and you are always so prompt in replying, I really appreciate it. I am trying to get more intune with todays fashion, and that is hard since I hate to go to the mall shopping. I am trying to get into online shopping. I am sorta enjoying stitch fix, but feel most of the boxes are styled by young people not more mature woman. My grand kids say I dress like old days, LOL. I am not comfortable with showing so much skin and that is why I like you styles. Thanks for speaking to the modest woman ..

    1. Thanks, Sheila. I hope it’s helpful! Another idea is to peruse Pinterest for fashion ideas and to stay up to date on the latest styles and how to wear them. Sometimes I search a specific question, like how to style cropped pants, or whatever it is I’m wondering about. And of course, I hope my blog helps in that way as well. 🙂

  8. I like this look on you Jo-Lynne! I like the slightly flaired leg, but I’m with you on the really flaired cropped legs. And what a great tee. Have a blessed day!

  9. Very cute! I bought a similar pair of Wit and Wisdom straight cropped jeans. They have a raw hem that isn’t exactly released (it doesn’t have the fold marks and color variation at the hem). I’ve really been enjoying them too. They are a slightly darker wash with no real fading or distressing so they are a tiny bit dressier which is good since my other favorite jeans are all distressed with holes. 🙂

  10. Cute! But almost everything looks nice on you! I have had the worst time finding t shirts this year. Just simple nice t shirts no trend. This is a good idea for a tee and I will sign up with Madewell too. As always so appreciate all your research and good options! Have a great day! Julie L

  11. I LOVE the jeans but not the price!???? I bought a pair very similar to these with the hem undone at Maurice’s for 1/4 the price. They are very comfy too????

  12. I like these jeans, and I think the reason I like them is that there is interesting detail at the hemline. When I see these with the released hem, or boyfriend/girlfriend jeans with rolled hems, I like them. I also like ankle length jeans that have plain hems as long as they are cut very straight and fit close to the leg. So, to me, straight or flared legs–anything with a wider leg–really needs to have some detail at the hem to look the best.

  13. HI JoLynne–what size is your tee? I’ve never ordered from Madewell before probably because they don’t carry petite siizes. How do you think this would fit someone that is 5 ft tall, short-waisted, 34D bust?

    1. I have the small, and it’s pretty roomy. I am guessing it will shrink a bit, but you should be fine in a small. I’m 5’5″ so it will be a little longer on you.

  14. I really liked that outfit !
I bought the same shoes. But do you have any trouble with the back slipping ? Thanks ????

    1. I don’t, and I went with the larger of the two sizes I tried to be sure to have enough toe room. They stay on fine for me. Maybe you have narrower heels?

  15. Thumbs up from me!! I really love the released hem look. I’m off to shop for a birthday gift later today, so I may have to hunt around to see what I can find for myself too!! Shh, don’t tell.

  16. Great look Jo-Lynne.! The straight leg pairs well with the sneakers. It’s a sporty casual look that always works well on you! Well… I sprung for two items last night, the denim tee from Loft and the floral trumpet sleeve top from Nordstrom. My hope is they look half as good on me as they both did on you! Hope you had a lovely day!

  17. This is the kind of outfits I like…simple, comfy and still nice. Ive been wanting to get a pair of converse but have heard they are not very comfortable. How are they? I know you also have plantar fasciitis…so does the flat sole bother your feet?

    1. My PF is better now. I don’t think they would have been great when it was flaring up. I like them for a few hours at the mall, or I can wear them all day at home, but I wouldn’t walk miles in them. Hope that helps!

  18. Love this outfit! I love almost all your outfits and that is so dangerous! ????. When you say a shirt hits at your sweet spot, what exactly does that mean? Thank you! Have a great weekend!

    1. It means it hits at a good spot to create the proper balance in the outfit. It can vary depending on the pants or bottoms you’re wearing with it, but there is a range that is most flattering. When you find it, it is easier to find tops that look good on you. 🙂

  19. Love the whole package, would totally wear this all the time, look so comfortable for an older me. Thanks Jo-Lynne for all you do to help
us keepin’ it real.!! Looks super cute on you.
