Booties Under $150

Friends and acquaintances have been asking me what is hot this fall and what the must-have items are. I immediately say booties and ankle boots. In my opinion, they’re the hottest and most wearable trends going right now, and so easy to incorporate into your wardrobe.

Also, word on the street is that grey is replacing brown and chestnut as the popular neutral this year. I find this amusing because I’ve always gravitated to grey, and I am just recently trying to incorporate more chestnut and brown into my wardrobe. Fortunately we are the style era of “anything goes” and I enjoy having both options in my closet.

I am a sucker for a gorgeous shoe, so the price point on my boots sometimes gets a little high, but you can certainly find quality booties for less than $150. Here are my top picks.

Instantly update your wardrobe for fall with a pair of these fall booties under $150. Wear them with skinny jeans, skirts or dresses for a modern flair.

#1. Vince Camuto Federa ($99): The cutaway design is super trendy right now, and I find Vince Camuto to make a quality, comfortable shoe. They also come in brown and black.

#2. Franco Sarto Pisces ($99): These are an impressive dupe for the Stuart Weitzman Grandiose Booties. They come in 4 color choices.

#3. BP. Trolley ($99): These come in several solid and perforated colors. I have always loved these boots but I never bought a pair. At $99, I don’t know why not!

BP. Trolley

#4. BP. Tandem ($119): A cousin to the BP. Trolley, the BP. Tandem Bootie was a hot item at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but full price they are still quite reasonable at $119. I do have these, and they are very comfortable.

#5. Payless Rooda Ankle Strap Bootie ($39): This is a great dupe for the BP. Tandem. I’ll actually be styling this bootie on the blog in a few weeks!

#6. Steve Madden Harber ($99): I love these for a classic black suede bootie. The two-inch heel is practical, and the block heel is on trend.

#7. Vince Camuto ‘Peera’ Cutout Bootie ($149): Another cutout style, this bootie is great for those liking a lower heel. I am a huge fan of the grey, but it also comes in black and a light khaki.

#8. BCBGeneration ‘Creen’ Peep Toe Bootie ($109): This sophisticated slingback peep toe bootie with geometric cutouts is a fresh take on the bootie trend. Of course, these are best for late summer/early fall — before it gets too cold. I love this taupe color. It would be particularly nice with skirts and dresses because it is a bit more delicate than a typical bootie, and the taupe color will make your legs look so long.

BCBGeneration 'Creen' Peep Toe Bootie

#9. Steve Madden ‘Sharini’ Bootie ($129): This bootie was super popular during the #NSale. The bold side cutouts and blocky heel keeps it casual with a bit of an edge.

Steve Madden 'Sharini' Bootie

#10. Payless Rosie Wedge Bootie ($39): The block heel is definitely taking over as the hot style this year, but I still love a good wedge. The Rosie wedge is super comfortable and looks amazing with black jeans.

Payless Rosie Wedge

#11. Lucky Brand ‘Yezzah’ Wedge Bootie ($138): This is my top pick for a suede wedge bootie with a genuine leather upper. These also come in black, but I love this honey color. The Lucky Yamina is similar but has a really cute little back tie detail. It also has more color options.

#12. Caslon® ‘Addison’ Wedge Bootie: Finally, for a slightly more rugged look, this pair by Caslon with the razor-lugged sole comes in 3 colors. I have never worn Caslon shoes, but the reviews are very good.

As far as what to wear with your booties, the answer is anything!!! Dresses, skirts, skinny jeans, bootcut jeans…. they all work. When pairing skinny jeans with booties, the ankle length jeans really do work best, but you can always cuff your regular skinnies. It just takes some trial and error to get it right.

This time of year, I always get asked when I stop wearing summer clothes. It’s been a big topic of discussion in our Fashion Over 40 Facebook Group. (Let me know if you want to join!) Traditionally, ladies only wore white and light fabrics between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Of course, depending on where you live, the weather often stays hot well past Labor Day, and summer doesn’t officially end until September 22.

I grew up in the South, and my mother was a traditionalist, so I’ve always followed the Memorial Day to Labor Day rule, albeit more loosely as I get older and the old rules are becoming antiquated. Here in PA, it often does start to get cooler in September, although we usually have some hot days sprinkled in there.

I like to change over my wardrobe gradually. On Labor Day weekend, I always pack away my most summery things — the lightest fabrics, linen dresses, gauzy tops, white sandals, and espadrilles. (I also usually wait till Memorial Day to wear those items.)

I will still wear shorts and tank tops and other summer items as long as it’s warm, but I will wear deeper colors and heavier fabrics. I’ll wear ballet flats more and sandals less, but I will keep out my darker sandals until it’s too cold to wear them. I’ll wear my suede wedge sandals rather than espadrille wedge sandals. It’s a subtle change over, but it makes me happy to move the summeriest summer stuff out of my closet and make room for the new fall clothes that I will slowly integrate in. (I store out of season clothes in the attic.)

As the weather changes, I will gradually move more and more summer stuff out. I keep a bin in my closet and I toss stuff in there until I have time to move it to the attic. By October, I will be pretty much switched over. I keep out a few summer pieces in case of warmer days, but the weather is usually cooling off significantly by then, and I’ll be ready to fully embrace fall fashion.

I will NOT pack away my white jeans and pastel jeans. Those stay in my closet year-round because they can be paired with booties and sweaters for fun fall outfits that are a little bit unexpected. Stay tuned for some ideas on styling those items for fall!

I hope that sufficiently answers the question of when to stop wearing summer clothes. Of course, this is just how I do it. There is no right or wrong anymore, and I realize that where you live has a big effect on how you transition your wardrobe. If I thought it was going to be in the 90s for the next two months, I would probably keep dressing for summer a while longer.

In other news, the new school year starts today for 2 of my 3 kids. It hardly seems real. It’s weird to me to send them back to school before Labor Day. And because my 3rd child doesn’t start until next week, this week seems sort of like a trial run. I feel more like I’m sending them to summer camp than to school.

It’s just a 4-day week, so I know it’s going to fly. I’m looking forward to an extra long Labor Day weekend. We don’t have any plans except perhaps a BBQ in the neighborhood, so I plan to spend the weekend organizing and purging. I think after that, I will finally feel like the new school year has begun.

  1. Such a great post! Thank you! I am in the market for booties so this was very helpful!
And I would LOVE to join your Fashion over Forty group on Facebook, can you tell me how?

    Have a great day!

    1. Sure! It’s a Private FB Group so I can only add people who I’m “friends” with on Facebook. You can send me a friend request here: https://www.facebook.com/jolynne.shane

I’ll approve it and add you to the FB group, and you can always “unfriend” me afterwards if you like to keep your FB friends small. 🙂 It won’t affect your membership in the group.

  2. Love these picks! Funny, I just got rid of my grey booties and added chestnut and khaki this year. I did consider a different color grey, maybe darker than what I had, but chestnut and khaki just seem more wearable for me. I’m also a big fan of the cutouts, especially for wearing here in the south. It has been fairly cool here for August too, so I may just break mine out soon!

  3. Looking forward to see how to style your white jeans for winter. Living in FL cold is 60 degrees, so the white jeans will be living full-time in my closet as well.

  4. Love these picks! Please don’t get rid of the read more link. Your photos don’t come thru on the daily emails I get. So the read more link is the only way I can get to the full post. Thanks!!

    1. Well, that is good info to have! 🙂 Thank you! I will keep them. Every time this happens, I SWEAR I will test them from now on before sending, but inevitably I have a rushed morning and forget.

  5. Great plan! It’s how I decided to do it this year and future. Could you give us more specific ideas and guidelines for purging? I REALLY need support, maybe therapy, haha, for that one.

  6. Great post Jo-Lynne! My son starts his Junior year of high school on Wednesday. I can scarecely belief that in two years he will be off to college. Best of luck to all your kids in the school year. I have a question regarding the VC cutout bootie. What kind of sock or stocking do you wear underneath,or do you go bare foot? I would typically wear these with skinny or boyfriend jeans with a rolled cuff but not sure if you do wear socks, that they should show…help!

  7. I think ankle boots are perfect—especially since they come in all heights—so the women that can’t wear heels can still wear these!!
I had to laugh at your “read more” issue. Only because I can totally relate. I haven’t done it as much lately but I used to hit the publish button instead of save—finally I just came up with the 404 page so when I’d do that, at least they’d get something!!
    Thanks for these inspirations!!

  10. I Love the gray boots but I’m not sure how to wear them. I am hoping you will show us how this Fall. They are very pretty

  11. I’d like to join your Fashion over Forty group. I’ve seen from the other comments and responses to send you a friend request. So I did that already. 🙂

  12. I ordered the grey vc cutout bootie during the Nsale but am still waiting for them since they were backordered. I would like to join your facebook group too.

  13. Thank you for adding me to the group…I’m over 50 and love reading your fashion posts. *smile*

  14. i rally enjoyed this post. To look in my closet, you would think I lived in a much cooler climate, but this Floridian loves boots and booties. My excuse, it’s north Florida! Ha! I would also like to join your over 40 FB group. Thanks for all you do to educate us.

  15. Please add me as well, JoLynne to your Facebook group. I’m Julie Minear on FB. I still go by my maiden name. 🙂

  16. Hi Jo-Lynne! I have several pairs of open-toed booties, How do I style these for Fall/Winter, or do I put them away and buy close-toed instead?

      1. Thanks for the help. I’m not a fan of hose w/open-toes (especially sandals) either! I know some very stylish older-ladies like me (57 +) who dress beautifully until you get to open-toed shoes and tights or hose….bless!!

  17. Great post! I’d love to be part of the Facebook Fashion Over 40 Group! I sent you a friend request just now.

    Thanks! 🙂
