Fall Weekend Outfit with Hooded Ribbed Tunic

Hello, friends. Cheers to Friday! I hope y’all had a good week. Today I’m sharing a super casual fall weekend outfit with this Daybreak Hooded CYA (CYA = Covers Your Assets) from Athleta*.

Bonus, this top just went on sale! I just went in to put the finishing touches on this post, and I discovered that Athleta has a bunch of new markdowns! It’s still a little spendy, but Athleta rarely runs sitewide sales and I’m always pleased with their quality.

I like the idea of pairing an elevated sweatshirt like this with jeans and slip-on sneakers for a comfy casual weekend look. It has an easy, relaxed fit for those days when you need a little extra breathing room but still want to look put-together.

This ribbed fabric is really pretty, and the hood is a fun touch.

This top also comes in black and a medium grey heather, but I love this gorgeous rich burgundy they’re calling cassis. For size reference, I’m wearing the small.

This top is designed to be longer in the back to “cover your assets” — thus the CYA in the title. It’s intended to be long enough to wear with leggings, but I probably wouldn’t because the front isn’t quite long enough for my comfort level.

If you want the comfort of leggings, Athleta’s stretchy skinny pants or their ponte skinny pants would both be good alternatives. White House Black Market also has a pair of side zip ponte skinny ankle pants that could work.

I don’t find jeans uncomfortable at all, and I actually feel better when I have a button and a zipper. I’m not as tempted to over-indulge, and it makes me feel more put-together, so I opted to wear this sweatshirt with my off-black skinny jeans c/o Hudson Jeans.

These are the Nico ankle super skinny jeans, and they have a really nice weight to them. They’re thick enough to be warm in the winter but still soft and comfortable. They have a slightly faded black wash that gives them a nice lived-in vibe. I find myself going for these when I want a more casual look but don’t want to wear bluejeans.

These jeans run true to size, and I’m wearing the 28 for reference.

I carried a black satchel with silver hardware so I went with a silver bracelet as my primary accessory. The neckline doesn’t lend itself to a necklace, plus I wouldn’t want to over-accessorize this look because it’s so casual. I also wore a pair of faux pearl earrings.

For a less expensive black satchel, check out the Lexington satchel from Sole Society. Sole Society does a great faux leather handbag — I like their quality and style for the price.

My black leather backless skate sneakers seemed like the obvious shoe choice for this outfit. They keep the outfit modern and give it a cool, chic vibe.

If you’re looking for less expensive backless skate sneakers, check out this BP. pair for under $50. Black or grey Converse would work too, or the Adidas Superstars.

Overall this outfit is more casual than what I typically wear, but I’m thinking I should do this atheisure-ish look more often. (I say -ish because I’ve been informed before that jeans aren’t athleisure… whatever you want to call it, this looks pretty athleisurey to me.)

hoodie // jeans c/o // shoes (option) // bag (option) // bracelet (option) // earrings

And it’s Friday, so that means linkup day! If you have a fashion blog, I’d love for you to join us. If you’re here for your weekly dose of style inspiration, you’ll find plenty of that here. Have a beautiful weekend!

  1. I just saw hoodies paired with blazers in the InStyle Magazine maybe last month? I think they can be perfect for our everyday wear!!
And those sneakers are great. I just gave my black leather ones to my mom (the 70+ model on my blog), hopefully she’ll prove that any age woman can wear them!
    Have a fabulous weekend, Jo-Lynne!

  2. I LOVE this athleisure look!  The top is so attractive because of the color and the detailing.  And I really like those shoes!  I keep trying styles like that on in the stores, but they make my feet look too big.  I wish I could find a pair that worked for me.

    1. I feel like my feet look huge in these too. I think it’s just part of getting used to the style. Sort of like Converse. I tried them on at least 5 times before I finally bought a pair, and then I just told myself that they only look huge to me and I love how they look on everyone else. Same with these – I shied away from this style for a long time, and suddenly I love them. LOL!!!

  3. Love this outfit wish it was not 85+ degrees in CA.. Color looks great on you! Love your nail polish color too! Do you mind sharing?
    Thank you.

  4. This is a super cute and comfortable look for me working at home. It also works great for when I have to run out on last minute errand. If I had just seen those shoes in the store, I would have passed them by. But seeing them on you, they look so cute!!

  5. Love that top, Jo-Lynne. From a distance it has a velvety look to it. I love the color you chose. I’m with you, I feel much more comfy in a pair of jeans. I only wear sweats at home and I still am trying to embrace the legging thing. I hope to do more with that with boots and longer tunics. Jeans will always be my buddies! Ha, ha. I like the black skinnies you are wearing. Need to find me a pair. I had to laugh when you hashed tagged “mustcutcarbs”, ha, ha. I hear you girl! I would love to be at 140, but I have about 20 pounds to go. Still any little bit of weight loss is better for my health than none at all. You look fantastic right where you are, by the way! Looking good! – Amy

    1. I hear ya. And thank you. I don’t mind how I look as much as how my clothes fit. I’m much happier around 135 – why is it always that last 5 lbs that is so hard to keep off? LOL!

  6. I love this outfit on you. I’m a petite and think the hoodie would overwhelm me since it is so long in the back; however, those jeans fit you perfectly and I love the idea of a very casual outfit with real pants. So many people are wearing yoga pants and leggings as pants these days and I still think of them as workout clothes. In my opinion
especially on the over 40 crew this is a better choice! Thanks

  7. Love the outfit! Also love seeing the fall leaves! Living on the Gulfcoast, I miss the beautiful fall colors. Also it’s going to be 87 today ????????????????

  8. Love this look but I have way too many hooded shirts, sweatshirts and cardi’s. I’ll stay away. I do agree with you about Athleta. Pricey but the quality is great. I have a few items that are years old and still look and feel great. If you stick with not too trendy things you’ll have pieces that are in your rotation for a long time! Enjoy the weekend!

  9. I’ve been following you for about a year now….love love love your style because its exactly the way I like to dress. I’m very grateful for your ideas & tips! Thank you so much for your hard work & dedication to this blog.

I had to comment about your “cut the carbs” tag. The carbs dont make us gain weight but rather the stuff we put on our carbs =) For great reading/watching, check out books, articles, or youtube videos by any of these people… Rip Esselstyn, Dr John McDougall, Chef AJ, Dr Alan Goldhamer, Dr Joel Furhman. I could list so many more great resources but Im sure if you get started you’ll find them just as I have this past year =)

  10. I love your style, it has influence the way I dress now. I have a question about your photo shoots, where and how do you find all the perfect places for your pictures? And who takes your pictures?

    1. Thanks, Stella. My husband takes my pictures. 🙂 We have a few favorite spots, and we’re always on the lookout for new ideas when we’re driving around. We just found the park where these were taken – it’s a pretty spot and not many people around, which is nice.

  11. I LOVE this outfit, especially the top!  You look comfortable, trendy, and put together.

    Have a fabulous weekend!

  12. That purple color looks great on you! So cute!

I tried on some shoes like those recently and they looked terrible on me; my feet looked huge. I have long legs and I felt like big bird. ???? I guess I have to stick with my superga or converse sneakers or my beloved ballet flats.

    I like those black jeans!
