25 Days of Winter Fashion: Turtleneck Sweater Dress

Hello and happy Monday! I’m so excited to kick off the 3rd annual 25 Days of Winter Fashion style collab with Cyndi Spivey!

I decided to devote this week to outfit ideas for Thanksgiving Day, but this could also be a work wear look, a church outfit, or something to wear out to dinner. If bare legs aren’t appropriate for your work place, tights are always an option.

I realize not everyone dresses up this much for Thanksgiving so I’ll have some more casual outfit ideas later this week, but if you’re a guest in someone’s home or going out to dinner somewhere, I think a sweater dress and boots is the perfect look for this holiday.

This Treasure&Bond Turtleneck Sweater Dress is really soft and cozy and priced under $100.  The raglan sleeves add a fun element of interest, and I also like the ribbing at the hem. This is the navy, and it also comes in olive.

I struggled with what boots to wear with this dress, and I’m really glad I settled on these chestnut suede boots. I think the outfit came together nicely.

These have a trendy cylindrical heel and an almond shaped toe. They’re super comfortable, and I especially like that they are suede on the inside instead of being lined with cloth. It makes them feel more expensive than they really are.

I’m always pleased with Sam Edelman shoes. I think he does a great job making a quality shoe at a mid-range price point, and his styles are always on trend but also classic so you can wear them for years.

I got these boots for 40% off during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and they’re on sale again, but unfortunately they’re almost sold out. Any boots in a taupe or chestnut would work with this dress, so I’ll link up some similar styles below.

Ankle boots are another option, and they even picture this dress with white sneakers on the website, which would be fun for a casual Saturday outfit.

I kept my accessories simple with these oversized faux pearl earrings. I’m gravitating to these a lot lately. I like how they add a simple elegance to any outfit, casual or dressy, and they don’t get in the way when you wear turtlenecks.

Sometimes I get questions about my makeup. This lipstick is my favorite neutral combo — the MAC lip pencil in Spice, Nars lipstick in Rosecliff, and MAC lipglass in Cultured.

SALE ALERT >> Sephora is having a 20% off sale thru 11/15! This is a good time to stock up on your favorites or try something new. The code is 20FORVIB. I’m going to pick up a couple of makeup palettes for my girls for Christmas gifts.

Also, I’m wearing Indigo Frock on my nails. I think this is my favorite nail color for winter. I like to try different ones, but I always come back to this one.

I’m wearing my trusty fitted slip to prevent the dress from clinging. I usually also wear these control shorts under dresses, but I can’t find them at the moment. #ooops

I carried a cognac bag to coordinate with the boots and that’s pretty much it! I know I say that I don’t like dresses, but you can’t deny how easy they are. Just throw it on with boots, add some earrings, grab a bag, and you’re ready to go!

  1. I have been looking at that very dress on Nordstrom’s site for a week!  Do you think it is likely to pill easily? There are no reviews as yet so I would like your opinion.  I am having trouble finding a classic sweater dress that isn’t super short!

  2. How do you take care of suede shoes? How do you keep them from stains and water spots, etc. I realize you probably wouldn’t wear them in the pouring rain but if your out late or leaving early and there’s dew on the ground.

    1. Yeah, suede is a pain. I almost always treat my suede shoes/boots before wearing with suede protector. That usually does the trick. (And I’m careful about not wearing in messy weather.) That said, I did wear these for a photo shoot before spraying them and I got spots on them somehow. I must have walked thru damp grass. I am so annoyed. I’m going to take them to the local shoe repair shop and see if they can work on them.
This is the kit I have: https://amzn.to/2yyeai5

  3. I love a sweater dress! It’s my go-to dress in the winter. I always wear V necks though– which tend to be thinner and look dressier. I may have to check out a turtle neck like this– or maybe a loose mock neck?

I’m excited about the Facebook Live sess, Jo-Lynne– I’ve never participated in one. I hope I can make it.

  4. Cute outfit and Loving  those boots, unfortunately Texas weather doesn’t give us many cold enough days to wear sweater dresses. However, I did invest in a few “sleeveless”sweater dresses last year and glad they will still be in style ????

  5. Another perfect 10 outfit! I love everything about it! The color of the dress is very striking on you, And your eye lashes – to die for! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for the other 24 days!

  6. I appreciate how honest you are in these posts! The fitted slip remark was liberating. I love sweater dresses but after I buy one I always feel nervous to wear it because of issues like clinging…

  7. Nice!
I have those boots and just wore them for the first time Saturday for family pics.
Kinda forgot about treating them… thanks for the reminder!! ????

  8. That looks cozy and makes for easy dressing. Like you, I don’t wear a lot of dresses anymore but this one would be like wrapping yourself in a big knit blanket.

  9. You look soooooo cute.  Love the dress and the boots together.  I love that color boots with navy.  Perfect.  Going to be fun to have the Winter series with you and Cyndi. She looked cute today too in her sweater dress.  You both do such a great job with your styling.  Love opening my email each morning for a fun time.  🙂 LOL  Enjoy your day.  PS  Love that nail color too

  10. I love looking at all your awesome outfits and ideas. I I am 68 so some of them are too young, but love checking it all out. Thanks for the ideas.

  11. Your outfit is awesome! But I also want to know – did you take the plunge and do take that walk/run? LOL! Getting back into it, when you’ve been out of it, definitely takes a lot of self-talk.

    1. Sigh…. I did not. I kept doing “one more thing, one more thing…” and then it was too late. Today it is raining. I did work out at 6am so there’s that. But it does not do for my mental health what running does. I’m actually feeling really stir crazy and anxious today and I know this is why. I need to get out there tomorrow no matter what and then get myself back on track. (ha. no pun intended.) I can’t stand feeling this way.

  12. I would have struggled with boot color too but you nailed it! The dress looks great in olive too. Do you find it true to size?

  13. Love your makeup especially the eyeliner. I continue having trouble with eyeliner staying on. Can you share what brand you are wearing?

  14. Love this Jo-Lynne. Love the casualness (is that a word?) of the dress. I would definitely wear this look to lunch/dinner with friends. Perfect for Thanksgiving too. The fact that it’s a knit makes it so versatile. You look great in this. I could see it with a denim jacket or your leather jacket. So cute!

  15. There is an actress on hallmark movies that could be your sister. Looks like you. Taylor Cole is her name. Look her up. Christmas festival of ice is one I’m watching.

  16. Jo-Lynne,

I love these boots on you! I’ve been looking for a pair of knee high camel color boots and these are perfect. They look great with that dress. This is definitely one of my favorite looks on you!

    Cathy V.

  17. Love this look! I’m always drawn to sweater dresses, but the opportunity to wear the chunky ones with a cowl or turtleneck like I like is rare down here. This one would be a must have otherwise, it’s exactly the style I’m always eyeing.

  18. Love this. Thank you for styling it. Seeing it with the boots is very helpful. Love those! Too bad they’re out of stock. I found an amazing cowl neck sweater dress at Nordstroms. It’s an Eliza J and it’s got a great pleated skirt. Wore it yesterday with booties and felt like a million bucks! It’s still on sale for 40% off. I’d highly recommend it!

  19. Great outfit! How does the dress fit… it is really true to size? I’m 5’3 and wear a 12 so I’m thinking large. Also, loooove the boots! Apparently everyone else does too because I can’t find them anywhere!! Would an OTK style work? (I just wonder if the dress would be too long on me for OTK boots.)

Thanks for all the great ideas! I love that I can use what I already have in new ways!
    Jody

    1. Hey Jody, I do think the dress is too long for OTK boots – especially if you’re my height or shorter. (I’m 5’5″.) I did try it that way – but the dress sort of rested on top of the boots. It didn’t look very good. I would say it is true to size, or it runs a little big. If in between sizes, I’d go down. Hope that helps!
