What to Wear with Printed Shorts

Today I’m styling printed shorts. I’m usually a solids kind of girl, but sometimes it’s fun to mix it up with a print. If you’ve ever wondered what to wear with printed shorts, I like to keep it simple with a plain white tee.

What to Wear with Printed Shorts: Classic White Tee & Wedge Sandals

These Feather Print Shorts from White House Black Market are really nice quality, and they’re currently on sale for $41! These are their Coastal Stretch Shorts. They have a 5-inch inseam, and they come in tons of solid colors as well as a few patterns. For size reference, I’m wearing an 8.

I love that this pattern is so versatile. As far as what to wear with printed shorts, you could easily pair these shorts with a black or blue top, but I decided to keep it simple and wear a basic white scoop neck tee. You simply can’t go wrong with this classic combo.

This tee is from Ann Taylor last year, so I’ll link to a similar one they’re carrying this year. I don’t know if they’re the exact same or not, but I like how this fits snug to the body. Since the shorts are a little wide at the bottom, having a form-fitting top is more flattering; otherwise you run the risk of losing your waistline.

What to Wear with Printed Shorts: White T-Shirt

Yes, my husband stuck me in an alley to take this shot. I couldn’t imagine it would look good at all, but as it turns out, the lighting was really nice.

Summer Outfit Idea: Printed Shorts & White Tee

I envision this outfit as something I’d wear out to lunch with my girlfriends or somewhere a bit nicer than running errands and working from home, so I dressed it up with wedge sandals and one of my dressier crossbody bags.

As much as I love the heels with this outfit, sometimes they’re not practical, so I thought I’d show it with flats too. I like the white flats with this because they sort of bookend the outfit along with the white tee, but nude would certainly work fine too. Or if you have navy blue, that would look really sharp.

I also changed bags to my more casual saddle bag. It’s ivory instead of white, but it works.

The necklace and bracelet are both Stella & Dot. I debated a long vs a short necklace and decided to wear something that fills in the neck area.

I never know what I’m going to find when I upload my pictures! Paul took this picture of me taking a picture of something interesting in a store window. I’m sure I was snapchatting. Anyway, it gives you a back view of the outfit.

Either way, with flats or heels, patterned shorts and a white tee is a chic and easy summer outfit formula that you can recreate at any price point. Now I need more patterned shorts. Ha!

    1. Thanks! I feel a bit odd in a wider leg, but I guess it works with the more form fitting top. It’s definitely a different silhouette than I’m used to. 🙂

  1. Darling shorts!! I just got some similar and I love just the simple white tee and flat sandals! You look cute as can be!!

  2. I’m right with you Jolynne. Love the look of printed shorts. I usually opt to go basic on top when I’m wearing them too. So much fun and whimsy.

  3. You look great. Always so put together. I know you’ve written that you basically run & lift weights but how many days a week? I’ve recently lost 10 lbs but now I feel like I’m at a stand still. I need to lose 10 more but I feel like I hit a wall. So I’m guessing I should step up my # of days I work out.

    1. Hey Jeri. I am just now getting back to running regularly. My goal is to get back to 4-5 days a week, but right now I’m trying to be consistent with every other day. I lift weights 2x a week. I also replaced my Fitbit and I’m trying to get 10,000 steps in every day. That said, I am frustrated with my weight. It is higher than it should be. I need to get down 4-5 lbs and keep it there to feel good in my clothes. there was a time when I was a good 10 lbs less than I am now. I miss those days! LOL. But I am 43, and I know I can’t maintain the same weight I did in my 30s. #thestruggleisreal

    2. Also, I should add, I am convinced that it is what we eat, more than our activity level, that matters for weight loss and maintenance. It takes both to be truly healthy and look good, but most of us cannot do enough exercise to counteract a bad diet.

My trainer is incredibly buff and fit and she works out like crazy, and when I complain about my weight and moan about how consistently I work out, she looks me in the eye and says, “But what are you EATING?”

As much as she exercises (she runs marathons) she is VERY careful about what she eats, she does detox things regularly, hardly eats dessert and almost never drinks alcohol. I like my wine at night, and I like my cheese and crackers, and while I rarely eat dessert, I do like my carbs. It’s a trade off. 🙂

  4. Those look really cute. I tend to wear solid shorts, but since I usually wear them with a solid color T-shirt, I should mix it up a little. 🙂

  5. I love White House Black Market great store. I also appreciate you styling them with both types of sandles. Love the shorts and the way you show us how to wear accessories…that is something I struggle with Lol

  6. Adorbs!!!!! Totally love it with the flats!!!! Also, can you tell us about your self tanner, or direct me to the post that you may have shared earlier??? You look fab, as always!!! Love your blog!!!

  7. Printed shorts are so fun. What a great way to dress up an outfit without dressing up. Those wedges ARE adorable. I’d love a pair of those in a smaller heel-because I would want to wear them all the time. 🙂 I have a pair of low wedge sandals (2.5 in) from Trotters and they are SO comfy and I can wear them anywhere.

I like wearing a low heel sandal with shorts-just my style. Your sandal options are chic too.

    Happy Friday!

PS. Do does this summer series mean no more blogging tips posts? Did you do another one after the How To Start A Fashion Blog? I don’t think I remember seeing it yet. Did I miss it?

    1. Sigh… I never did. LOL. I never found time in my editorial calendar. I kept moving it out, and now I’m into this series. I also don’t know how many readers it applies to. Maybe I should start a mailing list for people interested in knowing more… what do you think?

      1. Yes! It seemed like your How To Start A Fashion Blog post had a good response. But you’re right it would be a small subsection of readers. A mailing list would be good. You can shoot out your advice in an email, which would be A TON easier than writing a post. LOL. Sign me up: [email protected]

      2. As one of your readers who is NOT a part of that subset, I think that’s a terrific idea! I did read that post but it really didn’t apply to me so I mostly skimmed. And I missed your regular fashion-related post that day. 🙂

This shorts outfit is so cute! I love the more flared leg opening on you…it is very slimming! I am still working up the nerve to wear shorts again. It’s been years…

Also, I love that you made this a “two for one” by including the second look with more casual shoes. Big thumbs up!!

  8. I love seeing your different locations, from your front porch to around your town. You’re so right about weight loss, I read it is 80% diet and 20% exercise. I am seriously lacking in both right now, but starting over is always an option! Also just want to say thank you for your blog. I do look forward to it everyday!

  9. Love Love Love! I will be checking out those shorts today! You look beautiful as always! Have a fabulous weekend! Lisa

  10. Those shorts look really cute on you! I usually like a white tee or more often lately I like a pale grey heathered tee (since I tend to drip things on myself when we’re out to eat!! ). Have a blessed weekend! –Anne

  11. Perfect summer outfit! I was at Old Navy tonight, and they have some cute print shorts… And 50% off!
I notice you changed your toe polish from white… Love the pretty pink color! ????

    1. Thanks! I had red the last time, and it was limiting. The pink seems to go with more, but still limiting in some ways. I am looking forward to going back to white. I wish I had the time to switch it for every outfit, haha!

  12. The printed shorts are really cute, and I love them with the wedges. I prefer higher heels, but like you I know they are not always practical. The fact that your husband does your photography is fantastic. It gives you a lot of “together” time. Friday was a killer, I am finally getting to link-up. Thanks for the opportunity.

    1. It’s definitely been fun to have something we can work on together, but it can be stressful sometimes too, lol!!! I have to remember to treat him like a business associate and not a naggy wife. 😉
