What to Wear to a Spring Wedding

Good morning, friends! We’ve almost made it through the week!

I’ve been asked for outfit ideas for weddings, graduations, and other spring events, so today I’m styling a gorgeous seamed sheath that I think would be perfect for many of these types of occasions.

What to Wear to a Spring Wedding: Raspberry Seamed Sheath

The minute I laid eyes on this dress, I knew it was a winner. I realize the sheath style isn’t ideal for every body type, but if you have the hourglass shape, it’s pretty much always a winner. I expect it would also flatter a straight body type because the structure adds curves where you may not have them naturally.

If you’re pear shaped, you’ll probably want to find something similar to this in an A-line or fit-and-flare silhouette, so I’ll link to some other options at the end of this post.

What to Wear to a Spring Wedding: Raspberry Seamed Sheath with Taupe Suede Block Heel Sandals

I found this dress at White House Black Market — one of my go-to retailers for good quality dresses that are on trend but not trendy… if that makes sense.

This dress has great structure and fits beautifully. I also appreciate that it’s fully lined. It comes in petite sizes as well as regular, and it’s currently on sale for $109. I’d say it runs a little bit large compared to other brands. I wear a 6 in WHBM dresses, and I’m an 8 in Eliza J and Banana Republic.

I wanted the dress to be the focal point of the outfit, so I went with neutral shoes and handbag, and then I added a couple of pretty pieces of jewelry that are dressier than what I normally wear for everyday.

This gorgeous raspberry seamed sheath with taupe suede block heel sandals is exactly what to wear to a spring wedding this season!

This bag came from one of those Kate Spade Surprise Sales, and I think it was something like 70% off. I like this linen color — it’s not really white or ivory or pink, but it has hints of all of those shades. It’s my go-to spring and summer going-out bag. The strap isn’t removable, but sometimes I tuck it inside so I can carry it as a clutch.

This one would be a good alternative in the toasted wheat, or this one in cement. And this one is a little friendlier to the budget.

These earrings also happen to be Kate Spade. I love the chandelier style for a dressy look, and they are nice and lightweight so they don’t pull on my ears at all.

I ordered these shoes on the Shopbop sale a few weeks ago, and I’m loving how versatile and comfortable they are for a 4-inch heel. The block heel is trending right now, and the oatmeal color is so versatile. They look great with dresses as well as jeans and pants.

For a lower price point, I recommend checking out the Lulu and Marcella styles at Target. The Marcella has a lower heel but it’s still dressy enough to pair with this dress.

You can also look at the Sam Edelman Patti. I have these in nude patent from last year, and they are very easy to walk in with a 3″ heel. I like the more delicate silhouette for a formal event. I actually just ordered them in black patent, which is another option for this dress. I think it would be lovely with black patent heels and bag.

Here are some other pretty dresses available this spring that would work for weddings and other dressy spring events. Any of these would be gorgeous styled with neutral heels and bag, as I’ve shown in this post.

  1. That is a very pretty dress Jo-Lynne! I’m wondering if dressy flats would work, for those if us that for one reason or another, cannot wear even a low heel.
Good luck with the weather! I don’t envy y’all one bit. They are predicting the 70’s for us after being 19 this morning. Unfortunately, probably 90% of the peach crops sustained damage last night due to the low temperatures. Not good!
Regarding taking pictures-instead of freezing yourselves to take photos outside, we won’t mind if you take them inside this weekend. We are focused on what you are styling more than the surrounding scenery.

  2. Jolynne, why not do a “when the weather does a sudden change” for the weekend. It happens everywhere in March. Then go back to spring & add a couple days in April. Just saying. YOU look beautiful in that dress.

  3. Beautiful dress! By the way, these pictures are really good. I think your husband does a better job than the “professionals”.

    1. LOL, they were done by Alison Cornell. 🙂 She did a good job, right? I am working with her again next week, actually. Paul will still be doing most of my pictures, but while this weather is so fickle, I’m trying to fit in pictures on the nicest days, and it’s nice to have some other options during his work hours.

  4. Beautiful dress! Love the shoes also!
Could you take photos of a few outfits in your home? That way you are still productive but also warm!

    1. I might have to! There really isn’t a very good spot, but it beats freezing. We are actually having a couple milder days early in the week, so I’m going to meet with Alison, the photographer who did these pictures, on Monday to shoot a few looks that will hopefully get me through the week. 🙂

  5. WOW! That dress is smashing on you! I am so grateful you showed us what to wear to a wedding. I don’t go to many but I have one later this year. Now I know where the dress lengths are and that neutral shoes are still in.

  6. Do you think these bags would work with a navy dress and nude heels? I love the pink dress! Where are the others mentioned at the bottom of the post? One more question: what can you style those cute wedges with besides skinny jeans?

    1. I see the dresses now! Thanks for sharing all those. They are SO pretty!
The wedges I’m talking about are Marc Jacobs.

    2. Definitely, I’ve carried them with my nude heels before. The wedges look great with some dresses as well, the more floral/boho styles are what I usually see them with.

      1. Thanks Jo-Lynne! I value your advice. Have a graduation coming up in May. I got the Ann Taylor twist sheath in navy and am now looking for nude sandals.- the dress is too dressy for the wedges I think but I might like them with a denim skirt.

  7. This is a very helpful post, Jo-Lynne. Thank you! You look beautiful in that pink dress; I just love that color on you! I really like all the different dress ideas you included at the end of the post, too. I do have one question about dressing up, though: what do you recommend wearing over a sleeveless dress when the spring weather is cooler than you’d like, or when it cools down on a summer evening? I have a white cardigan that I’ve worn in the past, but I feel like it’s looking a bit less stylish than I’d like these days. Maybe if I bought a cropped one it would look better? I’d appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

    1. Hey Amy, I meant to address that in this post and forgot. It depends. A moto jacket, a blazer, or a jean jacket can all work, depending on the style of the dress and the formality of the occasion.

  8. This is stunning WHBM also has cardigans that match this dress exactly and even a shrug for those who like a little sleeve ????

    1. Yes, I was tempted to buy the matching jacket, but I didn’t want to put out the $$ and I know when it’s warm, I’ll be fine without. A black moto jacket would work too.

  9. Hi JoLynne–do you find that because you’re short-waisted you have to have dresses taken up at the shoulder in order to not have any gaping fabric around the armholes, neck and back area? I’m short-waisted also and find that many times this has to be done in order to have a more perfect fit.

    1. Sometimes I do – the Banana Republic sheath I styled last week needs to be altered. WHMB sheaths always fit me perfectly, though, which is another reason why I love shopping there.

    1. I think a structured blazer that isn’t too businessy would be ideal. Cardigans seem kind of frumpy to me these days. A denim jacket would be cool for a more casual venue.

  10. This dress is beautiful! I really appreciate how you are styling more versatile outfits. I’m a teacher and need to see casual/dressy outfits. Jeans are only a option once a week. Please continue to “mix”it up. I’m looking for more casual work wear ideas.

  11. Wow! Great outfit – and thanks for the ideas for us pear shaped gals! 🙂 I LOVE WHBM and try to get there everytime I am in the US.

  12. This is such a pretty dress and color on you! I have the same question regarding what to wear over this if it’s cooler…would the jacket or cardigan need to be v-neck because the dress is, or would round neck just look wrong?! Stay warm this weekend!

    1. I think you could wear any, but I tend to gravitate towards the v-neck ones with a v-neck dress. I like the idea of a collarless jacket with this – like the white one I styled with the grey pant and fuchsia blouse.

  13. WOW!!! How pretty!!! To have a body that would look good in a dress like that would be a dream come true!!! #weightwatchersforever!! Agsolutely lovely!!!!

  14. You look lovely in this dress. Love the shoes too, but unfortunately I cannnot wear open toe and heels of any sort. I have Peripheral neuropathy in my feet 24/7. Was wondering if booties can be worn in spring and summer. Thanks.

    1. Sure, they have a lot of styles now with cut-outs and perforations and things that make them more summery. It would take just the right one to carry off this dress, though.

  15. I was lucky enough to find a sheer lace wrap that I put over dresses if it gets chilly. The website mentions a jean jacket or I think a cropped shrug could also work.

  16. You look beautiful in this dress! I’m wondering if it is too low cut for church? It’s hard to tell! 🙂

  17. If there is an old building with beautiful architecture, you could do a photo shoot in there. You might feel a bit self concious though.but it’s all in the day of a beautiful model such as yourself.
    Love the sheath dress!

  18. Love that dress on you! I tried it on last weekend and it was on sale – unfortunately I’m a little too small on top to pull it off – looks much better on you! They had several dress styles on sale, but they were a little pricey even then. I like Kohls or sometimes even Ross Dress for Less for dresses. Did find very cute shorts and a flutter sleeveless type top at Loft last weekend. Thank you for your blog! Always enjoy!

  19. Gorgeous dress on you!

Would you please give me your your thoughts on hosiery for an April 1 wedding? I don’t want to use self-tanner unless I absolutely have to. But I’m not confident about the bare-legged look.

I’ll be wearing a black sheath with a black shrug. I was a little uncomfortable about the thought of wearing black to an afternoon wedding, but the stylist at Nordstrom told me it would be fine. I’ll be wearing open heels , constructed of primarily cork with leopard print straps.

    1. I think I’d do self tanner and bare legs, unless it is FREEZING where you are. I would do closed to shoes with verrrrry sheer nude hose if it was cold. I would not do hose with open heel or open toe shoes. I love and swear by this self tanner. It’s what I had on in these pictures. https://amzn.to/2mzqPuZ
