What to Wear on New Year’s Day

You guys. This is IT! The last post of my 12 Days of Holiday Outfits series with Kristin from BonBon Rose Girls and Cindy Spivey from Walking in Grace and Beauty!! I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed it. I’ve never done a series quite like this, and I had a lot of fun with it.

Today we’re going to wrap it up with What To Wear on New Year’s Day.

12 Days of Holiday Outfits: What To Wear to EVERY event this holiday season

I realize that some people spend New Year’s Day nursing a hangover (I hope that’s not you!) We often use this day as our last hurrah before the holidays are said and done.

Growing up, my grandmother always had a big gathering at her house on New Year’s Day. I recall homemade candy and finger foods all day long. In our early married years, we had family friends who would always host a similar event, and that was always fun to attend.

Nowadays we play it by ear, but we usually have neighbors over to hang out, order pizza, something casual but still try to make it festive. So attire is generally casual and I shop my closet to wear something cute and comfortable.

I was curious about New Year’s Day traditions, so I went googling and discovered that New Year’s Brunch seems to be a thing. Even for that, which sounds a bit more posh than a house party, the outfit suggestions are pretty casual.

You can shop your closet for similar looks. Or if you’re interested in these pieces, I’ve included shopping links below.

I’m crushing on that Boucle Cardigan from H&M. I’ve never bought a thing at H&M but I might have to finally try it.

You can find distressed skinny jeans almost anywhere. The ones in the image above aren’t available (thank you, Polyvore) but these are similar (and spendy) and these are similar and more affordable, also with less distressing.

The black drawstring bag is from Modcloth, and the Sam Edelman Petty ankle boots are available at Zappo’s.

As for look #2, the black boyfriend cardigan is also from H&M, but you can find them almost anywhere. The tank top is from AE. The bag is one I’ve had my eye on for months, but I can’t bring myself to pull the trigger. Backpacks are super on trend right now, and this Julian Backpack by R Minkoff is drool-worthy! I’m trying to resist the temptation. Hold me back!

The riding boots are Naturalizer. I have a similar pair that I love. And the cargo pants, again, you can find anywhere. These I grabbed on Polyvore because I liked them but they appear to be no longer available. This pair is is sorta similar.

As usual, all jewelry is Stella & Dot.

Or if you have nowhere to go, feel free to wear something like this.

Whatever you do, be sure to enjoy your day because on January 2nd, it’s all about nose to the grindstone, New Year’s resolutions and being efficient and productive. Bah humbug.

  1. Thank you! Now I know what I am wearing to the airport tomorrow to pick up my Sister. The first outfit 😉 A long day of adventures in and out of the car. Yay!!

  2. We typically host a New Years Day party (complete with barbecue, black-eyed peas and collard greens, a MUST in the South, at least), but this year we’ll be in Vail. So, I’ll be all bundled up in ski gear. I bought the gray CAbi jeans and am glad to have some outfit inspiration!

  3. I love the pants in outfit #2, where are they from? I’m headed to H&M this weekend for some things for my daughter, that sweater just might fall into my bag!

  4. New Years Day brunch is a great idea. I also love the focus on everyday style for New Year’s day instead of the typical New Year’s Eve style post, because , let’s face it moms don’t go out in mini skirts and platforms….or do they?!

  5. Hi sweet thing! I love the H&M sweater and have just discovered their very cute, reasonably priced clothing in the last month. In El Paso, we seem to be the last ones to get the movies, the restaurants and the stores. I found a similar sweater at JCPenney that I am hoping Santa will favor me with. But sadly, it is no longer available…EVEN TO SANTA??? You can check it out on my blog post about winter hats – https://onceuponatimehappilyeverafter.com/?p=579. Will be checking out your suggestion to wear with camos. Great post.

  6. Do you have a source list for the comfy, nowhere to go outfit? I do recognize the Dearfoam slippers but I’m curious about the rest of the items. Thanks!

      1. Thank you so much for responding. My daughter has flipped over the coffee tumbler. I’ve googled but can’t locate it. Any ideas?

  7. We stay at home for NYE … usually take the kids out for dinner and then come home and play board games and watch a movie. My two kids are 13 and 11… time is just going way too fast and we are trying to spend as much time with them as we can! Scary to think how soon they will be out of the house!! Happy New Year to you and yours! Looking forward to more of your fashion posts in the new year… hoping for some ideas about how to mix and match things I already have in my closet!

  8. We are having my mama & daddy over tomorrow afternoon, and my outfit will most definitely resemble your “stay at home” version! 😀
