Transitioning From Summer to Fall

Transitioning Your Wardrobe From Summer to Fall

I already wrote about how I organize my closet for fall and get rid of summer clothes that I won’t be wearing. But the next month or so is always a challenge when it comes to dressing oneself in the mornings. Often the mornings are cool but afternoons are warm. I’m always tempted to put away all my white and sundresses, but that’s not necessarily the answer to this conundrum. Here are a few tips to looking great and being comfortable in these transition months.

5 Tips for Transitioning Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

1) Layer a cardigan or jacket over your favorite summer dress or summer outfit.

Layering is always a safe answer, when you’re not sure what weather to dress for. You can remove layers as the day gets warmer. I particularly love jean jackets for layering during in-between weather.

2) Pair tights with a summer dress.

I love this idea. I’m always tempted to put away all my lightweight summer dresses the second Labor Day rolls around, but you can extend the season a bit with a pair of tights or leggings with ballet flats or pumps.

3) Combine summer brights with fall neutrals.

This takes some experimenting, but it’s a great way to get some more life out of your favorite summer pieces.

4) Alternatively, go bare-legged with a tweed skirt.

When you’re breaking out your fall clothes, and it’s not really cold out yet, keep something bare — legs are the easiest way to go! I love the look of a tweed skirt with ankle boots and bare legs.

5) Add a scarf.

Many of the links above showcase this technique — adding a scarf to a lighter outfit. This is one of those fashion trends that I struggle with, personally, but I know a ton of people that pull it off with panache!

  1. Its a bit chilly today, so I paired my summer dress with blazer. If the weather gets better later on, I will toss the blazer and enjoy the sun. Love the tips, as always you’re on point.

  2. This post makes me so jealous you get to “transition” one thing I don’t get to do here in SoCal. Especially, when today is in the high 90’s. Great tips though! I hope to be transitioning soon myself…
