Transition Outfit with Leggings

As summer starts winding down and the kids get ready to go back to school, I start itching to break out my fall clothes. Alas, it is 95 degrees here in Philly today, and fall seems pretty far off at the moment, but I’m teaming up with Nordstrom to share a fun transition look for when those cooler days arrive.

Transition Outfit: Lightweight Poncho with Leggings and Suede Boots

I actually think the fall transition season is my favorite time of year. I like it when the temperates are still mild enough that you don’t need a coat but not so warm that you break a sweat walking to the car. Plus the kids will be back to school, and I’ll get my house back during the day. (Wait. Does that sound bad? Just keeping it real.)

This Splendid Knit Poncho is one of my favorite purchases from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It’s the perfect transition piece because it’s lightweight and breathable for those warmer fall days, and when it gets colder, you can layer a long sleeve tee or a turtleneck underneath it.

Funny thing, I overlooked this poncho when I first saw it on the rack at the store, but then I saw another fashion blogger style it and mention the fabulous drape, and that reminded me about the one I got during LAST year’s #NSale that I loved so much.

I’m so glad she caused me to reconsider because this poncho is my new favorite. She was right on about the drape and the softness. By the way, that’s the key to a poncho being flattering and not overwhelming you — especially if you are petite.

I think I actually like this one better than last year’s because this one can be worn alone, and that one couldn’t, so I didn’t get as much wear out of it as I was hoping. For size reference, I’m wearing the M/L. I didn’t want to run the risk of it being too short, and I like my ponchos to fit generously.

This poncho has so many styling possibilities. I can see it with skinny jeans and ballet flats or ankle boots, and it would be equally cute with bootcut jeans and platform sandals. I can’t wait to try it with my new Aubergine skinnies, but for this post, I decided to style this poncho with black leggings and tall grey suede boots.

Let’s just discuss these boots for a minute. These are UGGs and they are actually water resistant! I’m a huge fan of suede, but let’s face it, you can’t usually wear it when it’s yucky outside. But these are water resistant, making them that much more versatile.

Plus, they are so cozy and warm inside. They have a memory foam-cushioned AND shearling-lined footbed so they’re super soft and they will keep your feet toasty warm all winter long.

They also come in black, chestnut, and a pretty latte color. I chose grey because I tend to wear cooler color tones, especially in the winter months, but I’ve seen other bloggers style the chestnut, and they’re gorgeous too, and of course you can’t go wrong with black. I think blondes always look great in lighter colored shoes, so that latte color would be so nice on someone with lighter coloring.

These boots have a 2 3/4″ heel, which is perfect in my opinion. They give you a nice boost in height but they’re still comfortable to walk in.

I carried this R Minkoff Dog Clip Leather & Suede Saddle Bag in Port because I liked the contrast of the deep red against the grey and black. This bag is such a cute addition to a fall wardrobe. It’s also available in a more subtle Whiskey color.

For jewelry, I kept it simple with some of my classic silver pieces. The necklace isn’t available online, but these Y Necklaces are trending right now, and this one by Kendra Scott would be perfect on this outfit.

I’m wearing these Ponte Knit Moto Leggings, which I also picked up at the #NSale. These are so thick, they’re almost pants, especially if you don’t size down. The website indicates that they have a generous fit, but I didn’t notice that when I tried them on in the store. Now that I’ve worn them, I can say they do run a bit large, and you may want to size down if you like a snug fit.

Fall Transition Outfit: Lightweight Poncho with Leggings and UGGs

This outfit will be perfect when the weather starts to turn. I’d totally wear this to an event at my kids’ school this fall or to meet my hubby for lunch. We often have lunch dates when the kids are in school because the evenings and weekends get so busy and we don’t like leaving them alone for too long.

How about you? Are you ready for fall temperatures, or are you wanting to hold onto summer a little bit longer? I wasn’t really ready for the change of seasons until the temperatures soared up into the 90s this week and the humidity practically chokes me when I walk out the front door. Now I’m hankering for fall!

Did you notice that I forgot my earrings? Oooops! I don’t think I’ve ever done that! I would probably wear my diamond studs or silver hoops with this outfit.

  1. Loving these neutrals and your amazing boots! It is entirely too warm here for any style transitions at the moment, but I am looking forward to wearing them when I can. Thanks for hosting and have a wonderful weekend.

  2. Wow, I love everything about this look. Poncho, purse, boots. I would like a pair of boots like that with a shorter heel. I am slightly over 5’10” with finicky feet and bad knees. But what a lovely look on you!! Beautiful.

    1. These are really very comfortable and don’t feel high at all, but I have had foot injuries, and I know where you’re coming from. There are also lots of flat boots and boots with 1″ heels out this fall. 🙂

  3. Sorry, this teacher is hanging on to summer as long as possible!! It’s 90+ here in Michigan too, with that spa-like humidity! Like you, just hoping for some comfy summer days! Love the outfit, just not yet! Haha! Will be in those colors long enough in the months ahead! But, I know, you’re just doing your job! Enjoy the weekend!????

    1. Ha! Girl, I hear ya. I had committed to posting this today, and I almost cringed when I realized I had to put it up in this crazy weather. Yeah, it’s a little early to think about wearing those boots. I am shooting a few looks this weekend, and they will definitely be lighter than this. 🙂

  4. I love, love, love everything about this outfit! The colors, the boots and I have serious poncho envy going on! Kicking myself for not getting it during the sale.

  5. This is such a cozy and classy look, I love it. Yes, I am craving fall and cooler temps too..I’m so over this smothering heat and have been for weeks. I can’t wait to try these boots too -they are gorgeous on you! I ordered the chestnut a couple weeks ago (taking forever to arrive but due here today!). They may be too warm for our weather here, but I may just deal if the fit is right. 😉

  6. Gorgeous outfit! I can totally see myself wearing something like this for fall. I’m kind of on the short side and I appreciate the tip of not looking overwhelmed by fabric when wearing a poncho. Thanks for sharing and hosting the link up as well.

  7. Well as much as I hate to see fall looks right now since the first day of fall isn’t until September 22nd, gosh, I love this outfit. It is fabulous! I love the tall boots with that poncho!

  8. I love this outfit so much! That poncho was one of my last Nsale purchases and it just arrived yesterday and I love it! So soft and pretty. And those boots are to die for. I wanted some SO bad but alas, fat calves here, so no go for me, even most wide calves dont fit me. I do have a pair of taupe suede boots thoufh that I think might work. I’ll just have to try them and copy this outfit when the weather cools down! I also love your idea of aubergine skinnies. I have some of those and so I think I’ll try that too! Love!

  9. I bought those boots in Chestnut at the Nordstrom Sale because both my mom and a girlfriend vacationed in Italy this summer and said that they saw Chestnut leather EVERYWHERE which makes me think that it will be a huge trend here in the next year.

Anyway, I got the boots a few weeks ago and am OBSESSED. They are a bit big around the calf for me without jeans but have a nice slouch which will be cut with skirts!

  10. I love this look and your blog in general! I was only able to get the ML in the poncho during the sale and it swallowed my 5’2 frame. I just sent it back to exchange for the smaller size today. Am hoping it will be in stock to get the smaller size. Can’t wait to then replicate your look. Thanks!

  11. What a truly pretty outfit! And one of the beauties of it, to me, is that anyone – no matter their age or size – could look good in it as long as the proportions are adjusted for the individual. So classy and beautiful.

It is in the 90s here with a heat index of 100 today. No playground time for my first-graders; that wouldn’t have been wise. I am very much looking forward to autumn! I will forever have etched in my mind getting off the school bus as a child, feeling the warm sun on my back with a bit of cool breeze in the air while walking through my backyard, crunching through the leaves. It’s my favorite time of the year.

  12. I love the boots and the purse. I’m totally not ready for fall yet though. Can we switch to highs around 80 though? LOL yes, I’m being picky. Would be nice!

  13. JoLynn, you look adorable in this outfit! I love the inspiration and the challenge of putting a classy outfit such as this for way cheaper then 735.00. Shopping my closet helps! I’ll be hoping and watching for that poncho to go on sale though! I should have shopped the anniversary sale! Thanks for always giving us great fashion tips and fun styles to experiment with; you’re a sweetheart!
