Sonia Kashuk Makeup Primer #BestOfBeauty

It will probably surprise no one that I’m a bit of a product snob. I buy most of my skincare and makeup at a department store (actually, right now I’m using and loving the Theraderm products for skincare; I write for their site so they send me free stuff. WOOT!) But you get the point.

I generally believe that you get what you pay for, but I’m always happy to try out lower priced products because every once in a while, I discover something that I truly love that’s a true bargain. And let’s face it, Mama was right; money doesn’t grow on trees. So like most of us, I pick and choose, and my beauty arsenal is a conglomeration of both budget and luxury products.

Recently I discovered a budget product that I have to tell you about. Every day when I use it, I think, I have to blog about this!!! I’m finally getting around to it.

When I visited the Target HQ last month, I was treated to a makeup session with Sonia Kashuk, makeup artist to the stars and creator of her own line of makeup and skincare for Target, and they sent me home with her entire line to try and use.

First, a word about my relationship with Target because I know people are curious, and I want to clear up any confusion. I am never required to write anything for Target, and I am not paid to promote them. They don’t tell me what to say or put any requirements on my content. As an Inner Circle member, they provide me with experiences and opportunities that I can share if I want and how I want. They do cover travel costs and have provided several gift cards to facilitate some of the activities I’ve done with them, but there is no obligation to write about any of it. Of course I do because naturally any relationship with a brand must be reciprocal to be a value to both parties, and because I am a huge fan of the brand and most of my readers are middle class Americans who also love Target so it feels like a good fit for my audience. But I choose what I want to share and how I want to share it, and every Inner Circle member gets different experiences that fit her brand and her content so that we are all offering something unique and original that is well suited to our audiences. I hope that makes sense!

So I have been trying out some of the Sonia Kashuk products since I got back. I am loving experimenting with her lipsticks. I tend to get in a rut with my makeup and wear the same thing until it runs out, so it’s fun to have all these colors to try. I’m having fun changing up my look each day with lipstick.

I’ve tried some of her other products, and honestly most don’t quite measure up to my standards. The eye shadows and foundations didn’t last well for me, and while I like the color and staying power of her eye liner, it’s not precise enough to give me the definition that I’m used to. They’re still good products for the price point, but I find myself going back to my tried and true.

I absolutely love and adore her Priming Vitamin Serum

Sonia Kashuk® Priming Vitamin Serum

And that might possibly be the longest intro for a product review ever in the history of blogging.

So why do I love it? I have tried other makeup primers, but they just go on like a moisturizer. This one goes on thick and smooth and I can almost feel it filling in my fine lines and imperfections, providing the perfect canvas upon which to apply my foundation and the rest of my makeup. My foundation goes on so much smoother than with other primers and stays put all day long.

(A priming serum goes on after your moisturizer, but before your foundation and fills in imperfections, smooths out your skin, and basically helps the foundation go on smoothly.)

Her Priming Vitamin Serum contains Vitamins C and E, which are supposed to deliver antioxidant protection and reduce free radical damage, as well as Vitamin B to help your skin to retain its moisture, and it claims to stimulate cell turnover with salicylic acid and bark extract, which should improve your skin’s texture and radiance. All that for $18.89, which I realize isn’t chump change, but if you compare it to department store products, it’s still quite a bargain.

Incidentally, I also love her Weekender makeup bags. They sent her makeup home with me in 2 of these, and they are fabulous makeup bags. I can finally find everything I need at a single glance, and they’re cute too!

I need a new way to store my makeup, the link doesn’t have any pictures of the inside of the bag, care to share with us?

  2. Jennifer O says

Thanks for the tip! I’ve never used a makeup primer, but I will have to try it out.

Also, I love that you have a relationship with Target, and that you blog about it. Target is my favorite “non-department” store, and I’ve gotten lots of great ideas/tips from your posts.

I love Sonia’s lipsticks also and actually it is the only thing I’ve ever tried from her line. I will definitely try the primer once my current brand runs out.

I would love for you to do a makeup tutorial on your current routine. Or at least a rundown of the brands you are currently using. It always looks fabulous in your posts.

I wear a tinted moisturizer as my foundation…do you think I would still put the primer on after that? I love hearing about your recommendations!

Great question! I’m pretty sure you use the primer before your tinted moisturizer. I often use Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer in the summertime, and I actually bought her primer to go under it because they recommended it at the makeup counter, and they told me to use it under.

I too would love to know what other products you are currently using. I have been feeling in a bit of a make-up rut too (and clothing rut and exercise rut… Spring come quickly!). I’d love to know what products you like. I have too many cosmetics in my cosmetics grave yard to make a leap without recommendations these days…

I am always looking for something to help my foundation last longer during the day. I’m going to Target on my lunch hour. I’ll have to see if I can find it.

This will show how knowledgeable I am about makeup. For some reason, I thought primer was only for the eyes and not all over the face. Silly me.

I may actually try this. I’ve been using MAC Strobe Cream under my foundation and I really like that product, but it’s completely different from primer.

Thanks for the review! And, honestly, it’s my dream to be in a relationship like that with Target. 😉

I like Sonia Kashuk lipsticks and of course the makeup brushes. I always use primer – my favorite is Nars. I also like to use eyelid primer when I can remember. My Nars is almost gone so I’ll check this one out. I just got a great coupon in the mail from Target. :)
