Outfits That Didn’t Make The Cut

I just wrapped up a series where I posted 25 winter outfits, and would you believe that I still have several outfits that I photographed and never shared with you??

Some didn’t make the cut simply because there wasn’t enough time (and I’m saving one or two of those for a rainy day, so to speak) and others didn’t make the cut because I didn’t love them or they seemed repetitive. That said, I went to the trouble of putting the outfits together, taking pictures, and editing them (to say nothing of taking a shower and doing my makeup, ha!) so I thought I’d share a few in a bonus post today.

Outfit #1: Red + Leopard

Winter Outfits for Moms: Oversized Red Sweater with Black Jeans and Leopard Flats or Leopard Pumps

Yes, another red sweater! I knew this isn’t the most flattering cut for me, but I still felt cute in it. I like the seam detailing and the low scoop neck. I wore it to my daughter’s holiday chorus concert at the middle school last week (with suede boots for a more casual look) and then I returned it to LeTote. (LeTote is a clothing rental service. Basically they send you clothes, you wear the ones you like, then ship them back and get a new box. It’s pretty fun.)

For these pictures, I wore the sweater with my black jeans and leopard ballet flats. This would be cute for a casual lunch with friends or volunteering in your kid’s class at school.

Just for fun, I also tried the outfit with my leopard heels. The sweater is really too casual for this, but it just shows how much longer and leaner we look when we wear heels!

Outfit #2: Stripes + Olive

quited vest 8

This outfit is cute, but I think I’d like it better with my black infinity scarf — or maybe even the oxblood fringe scarf.

I also struggled with what to do with my pant legs and these ankle boots. I don’t like the messy cuff that I ended up with. Here’s where taking pictures is helpful. If I wear these pants again with these ankle boots, I’ll leave them uncuffed and just let them fall where they may.

The quilted vest is fast becoming a wardrobe staple. I find myself wanting to wear it with everything, and it’s perfect for this mild weather we’ve been having because I don’t don’t need a coat yet. It’s also 40% off right now with the code GIFTNOW, and it comes in 8 colors. The final price is $58.80, and it was originally $120. I think I am going to snap it up in another color!! Also, the site says their Free Shipping ends today, AND they are guaranteeing Christmas delivery. (For size reference, I’m wearing a small.)

Outfit #3: Pink + Black

I wore this outfit last weekend when we took our family out to dinner and to local Christmas music production. I didn’t put much thought or planning into this outfit. I had the black jeans on from earlier in the day, and I just threw on the pink sweater and the heeled ankle boots and walked out the door.

I love this sweater — the color is unexpected, and the detail on the sleeves is pretty. However, because I tend to carry my weight in my top half, I look better in turtlenecks when I wear something over them, such as a jacket or a vest. I love this sweater with my black down vest (shown above) and you can see how that outfit came together here. Also, a long necklace would have helped to break up the front — or even a scarf. I also could have thrown my black leather jacket on with it. These are the reason this outfit didn’t make the cut. It’s fine, but it needs a few tweaks to make it really work for me.

I carried my grey satchel, and I wore the heeled ankle boots in an attempt to dress up the casual outfit for a night out.

  1. Love the casual but polished looks. You look amazing in every outfit. Thank you for the inspiration. I work at home and its very easy to get in a rut but throwing on a cute v neck sweater or scarf kicks it up a notch with jeans from ideas i got from your winter outfit pieces. So thrilled i found your blog and facebook. <3

  2. Jo-Lynne, I really appreciate you showing us some of your out takes because it tells me that you too struggle at times with outfits you put together. I guess it reminds me that you too, are human. Ha! If I needed a wool sweater I would definitely order the pink one. It is very different and an awesome shade of pink. I hope you have a fantastic weekend. Today is the last day of school in our county in GA until the new year, so kids are super excited about the two week break. As much as our 16 year old granddaughter loves school, she’s ready to sleep after the Nutcracker performances this weekend. God bless!

  3. I really like the outfit with the olive pants. I got an Old Navy black quilted vest off eBay and, like you, find I want to wear it every day (if I’m not wearing the green military vest). It is thin and so doesn’t add bulk. And I have come to be like you in wanting “something” over a sweater–at least a scarf if not a vest or jacket. I don’t think I used to have that hangup. Merry Christmas!

  4. I can totally relate to posting these because it does take a lot of work. There are so many times I look at some of our pictures and think….uhg! But it is a learning process, right? I will say I really like all these looks. I think my favorite is the red sweater and leopard shoes (and I’ll disagree that you say the sweater is not super flattering—I think especially with the skinner jeans, it’s a great proportion!) jodie

  5. I like these outfits. My favorite is the first. Love the red sweater. The color looks beautiful on you and the neckline is so flattering. I like the dropped shoulder and details, too. Can you get that one back lol?

The pink sweater is also very pretty!

  6. I love them all!
Oh, and off topic, I finally ordered that port Lush tunic you posted in the fall, lol. How couldn’t I, for $25?!

  7. Thanks for showing us some of the “behind the scenes” pictures. It’s fun to hear about how you think through your outfits, and the changes you make.
