Outfit Inspiration: Black + Olive

Do you ever get into an outfit rut with colors? I do. Some weeks I look back at my outfits, and they’re all neutral. One week they all seem to incorporate black, and another week, they’re all blue or coral or whatever. Lately, I’ve been feeling the neutrals. I did a post on denim and white last week, and the next day, I found myself gravitating to black and olive.

Black and olive is a classic combination that I never seem to tire of. It’s probably not the first color palette you think of when you think about spring, but I find myself wearing it all year round because I enjoy it.

One tip for keeping a neutral color palette interesting is to add a pop of color somewhere. It can be in the shoes, handbag, or jewelry. In this case, I carried a coral handbag.

Another tip is to choose pieces of clothing with unique details. I love the detailing around the neckline of this top. It’s hard to see it in these photos, but it’s not just a plain black t-shirt.

And the olive pants are cargo pants, so the pockets and zipper details add interest to the outfit as well.

Black and olive can be heavy for spring, which is why I chose coral as my accent color. Pink would have worked as well. The gold espadrilles also help keep it light. For jewelry, I wore this black and white bangle and the gold star bangle together.

I didn’t want to interfere with the detailing on the top, so I skipped a necklace and wore gold hoop earrings.

Shopping links are a bit scarce for this post. The black top was from the LOFT several seasons ago, and I haven’t seen anything like it since. You probably have a cute black top in your closet, right? If not, remedy that situation immediately!

The olive cargo skinnies were from Stitch Fix. My orange bag is also old, but Nordstrom has a nice selection to choose from. I personally love this reversible faux leather tote for $48.
