My Favorite Christmas Music

favorite christmas songs

The turkey’s been put away, the decorations have been brought down from the attic, and Christmas music is wafting through my house once again! I guess it’s time to share my favorite Christmas tunes. I posted this a couple years ago, but not much has changed. I could really use some new tunes to spice up my December!! If you have any suggestions for songs to add to my list, please let me know in the comments.

My 15 Favorite Christmas Songs

1. Ring The Bells :: Travis Cottrell (featuring Natalie Grant)

2. I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day :: Casting Crowns

3. It Came Upon A Midnight Clear :: Mercy Me

4. O Come All Ye Faithful :: Martina McBride

5. Deck the Rooftop :: Glee Cast

6. Joy to the World :: Yancy (from her Have A Fancy Yancy Christmas album)

7. Joy To The World :: Jewel

(I couldn’t resist. I love both versions of Joy to the World! Very different versions of the same song.)

8. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlmen :: Mercy Me

9. Here With Us :: Joy Williams

10. O Come All Ye Faithful :: Josh Groban

11. Silent Night :: Jewel (This one of my favorite Christmas songs ever; the theology never ceases to humble me.)

12. O Holy Night :: Martina McBride

13. When Love Came Down :: Point of Grace

14. The First Noel :: Josh Groban and Faith Hill (Duets always do me in.)

15. Little Drummer Boy :: D Bowie & Bing Crosby (cheesy but I love it)

Still, I admit, I am tiring of the same 4 (or 24) songs over and over, so if you have some you think I should add, please let me know!!

  1. I am a total Christmas music junkie! I have a flash drive I listen to in my car that has 30 or 40 Christmas albums on it. Of course, I keep finding myself going back to the same favorites and skipping the rest. So, here are a few favorites of mine…

Non-traditional: Labor of Love (I think it is written by Andrew Peterson and sung by Jill Phillips) from The Nativity Story soundtrack and Joseph’s Lullaby by Mercy Me – these first two give a fresh perspective to Mary’s & Joseph’s part of the Christmas story; Light of the Stable by Selah; Let There Be Light by Point of Grace

Traditional: Silent Night by Mercy Me with Amy Grant (definitely country-fied but I like it despite that fact ;-)); Chris Tomlin’s Glory in the Highest Christmas cd in it’s entirety; for background music I love Chris Rice’s Living Room Sessions: Christmas (all piano – beautiful!).

    1. I forgot a really good one – The Twelve Days of Christmas by Straight No Chaser – an AWESOME acapella group, if you’re not familiar with them.

  2. Now I need to go and listen to your favorites. As part of my list, I have always loved the song “It’s Christmas Time” by City on a Hill and last year I found Audrey Assad “Winter Snow”-just beautiful!!

  3. Two of my favorite Christmas CDs are When My Heart Finds Christmas by Harry Connick Jr and Aaron Neville’s Soulful Christmas (song, “Such a Night” is my favorite) – they are both full of great songs. I find myself listening to those over and over.

  4. The Good Lovelies – Under The Mistletoe. Great Christmas album. They are a great Canadian girls singing group that have amazing voices. I saw them live this summer, wow!

  5. Angel (Holiday) by Jack Johnson, Silent Night by Boyz II Men, and Breath of Heaven by Sara Groves…I could go on and on, but those may be a good match for you.

  6. Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas CD is great to listen to, and their music is even better in concert. I also have to listen to The Little Drummer Boy by Bing Crosby and David Bowie every Christmas.

  7. I love Harry Connick Jr.’s Christmas Albums! I’m a sucker for his voice. Also, Josh Grobin’s “Oh Holy Night” gives me chills. I’ve started listening to Pandora a little more. I just park it on an “Andy Williams” or “Bing Crosby” Christmas station. You end up hearing classics from the classic artists which I love too. My Mom was a Christmas music lover and an Oldies music lover, so I think that Andy Williams, Bing, Peggy Lee (Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree), etc. will always bring back warm, fuzzy feelings. 🙂

  8. You need to add Hallelujah (Light Has Come) by Barlow Girl. I think you’ll love it! I also like this Christmas EP that Leigh Nash (was/is the lead singer from Sixpence) did a few years ago, called Wishing for This. She does an awesome version of the old Dolly Parton song, Hard Candy Christmas, and another one I love called Eternal Gifts. “Santa knows what I want for Christmas but Jesus knows what I need.” Love. It’s not on Spotify anymore! I know it used to be. Maybe you can check it out somewhere else. And this might make me sound really young (I’m not) but since you have a Glee song on your list, I feel like I can go ahead mention that Relient K’s I Celebrate the Day is one of my most favorite “non-traditional” Christmas songs ever.

  9. In my house, we LOVE Christmas music! My crazy daughter even occasionally fires it up mid-summer for 24-48 hour bursts! My hubs favorite is the Amy Grant CD. My favorite cd…the one I wait till Dec 10th to fire up…is Donny Osmond – Christmas at Home. I LOVE that CD – so does my whole family and like the 20 people I have bought it for over the years 🙂 !! We also love the Jewel CD (I see you have 2 of hers above) and the Home Alone Soundtrack CD. A couple good tracks are The Smashing Pumpkins Christmastime, of course David Foster’s The Carol of the Bells and I think the Jars of Clay Little Drummer Boy is the best ever recorded (although my husband would say the White Heart version – yup they do have one, lol!!! Now I need to go fire up some Christmas tunes!!

  10. I am aware I’m late commenting here but I just discovered a new favorite yesterday. I couldn’t help but think of you. I tried to scan all the comments to make sure I didn’t duplicate but I’m at work and did so quickly. A few have already mentioned various versions of Little Drummer Boy but this is version by Pentatonix is incredible. 1. I’m in my late 60’s so the classics are what I love. (Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat “King” Cole, Perry Como). However my pick would be Breath of Heaven by Amy Grant. It never fails to give me chills.

  11. Harry Connick Jr is a must! Also any of Jim Brickman’s music. Another ‘oldie but goodie’ that we use in our house to get everyone pumped up is ‘Jesus was born today’ by the Oak Ridge Boys! Listen to it every Christmas morning!

  12. I’m getting lots of ideas here! 🙂 But one that was released as a single a few years ago, but I just love so much is ‘O Come O Come Emmanuel’ by a trio called Carter’s Chord. It’s the daughters of some older country singers. Anyway, it’s just awesome!
