Make-Up Tips from Sonia Kashuk

One of the highlights of my trip to the Target HQ with the Inner Circle crew was our makeovers with celebrity makeup artist Sonia Kashuk. What made it a true learning experience more than just a fun makeover was that she set us up with our own makeup and brushes and lead us through the process while we applied our own makeup.

Her good friend and also an acclaimed makeup artist in his own right, Edward Cruz, circled the room and helped us if we got stuck and gave us suggestions to push us out of our comfort zones a little bit. It was super fun since I love makeup but often feel like I don’t know what I’m doing.

I thought I’d share some of the tips that I particularly liked from the session.

Make-Up Tips from Sonia Kashuk

1. Start with eyes so fall-out from eye shadow doesn’t mess up your face. (This is also how the makeup artist who did my face for my Cosmo photo shoot did it.) I don’t know about you, but I always start with foundation. I’ve been trying it this way, and it does make a lot of sense!

2. Apply eye liner right into the roots of the eye lashes. I’ve been making sure to do this for a while, now, and it’s amazing how much better it looks. You don’t ever want to see skin between the eye lashes and your liner.

3. Smudge the eye liner with a fine-tipped makeup brush and set with powder. THEN apply eye shadow. So brilliant! This solves the issue I sometimes have of my eyeliner getting onto my eyelid.

4. If you don’t have eye shadow primer, use foundation to even out discoloration on eye lids before applying eye shadow. I tried it, and it worked! This is also a great tip for those lazy Saturdays when you don’t want to wear eye shadow. The foundation evens out your skin tone so you don’t really need it.

5. When using a bold lip color, take a finger tip and smudge it a bit around the edges of the lips so it isn’t so harsh. I love this tip because I always shy away from bold lip colors because they feel too stark against my skin. With this tip, I have found myself gravitating to brigher lip colors, and I really like the effect.

6. You don’t necessarily need foundation over your entire face. Apply it where you have discoloration and blemishes, but go sparingly everywhere else. If it’s the right color, it will just blend in to the areas where you don’t apply it.

7. Go easy on face powder; sometimes all you need to do is blot with a big brush. This is so true for me. My skin gets so dry in the wintertime, sometimes all I need is to blot my makeup with a big brush. Powder can start to look flaky.

8. Keep a tissue handy and wipe your brushes between each color. This sounds obvious, but it’s something that I never thought to do. It definitely helps keep your palettes clean and the right color on the brush.

9. Keep an extra clean eye shadow brush on hand for blending. I love this idea too! Sonia is all about her brushes, in fact, it is her brushes that have brought her the most acclaim in her Target collection. Using an extra clean brush to blend in the eye shadow at each stage of application really helps you get a more professional look.

That is 9. I feel like I need a 10. Surely I’m forgetting something. I’m sure it will hit me as soon as I hit the PUBLISH button.

Here is a photo of me with Sonia when we were all done. She had actually been doing her makeup right along with us!

Do you use any of these tips? Anything surprise you? Which is your favorite?

disclosure: As a Target Inner Circle member, this experience along with my travel expenses were provided by Target. I also received a collection of Sonia Kashuk makeup and brushes to bring home with me. I am not an employee of Target, and all opinions are my own.

  1. I always put foundation on first, but tomorrow I will try things the other way around! I do keep a washcloth to wipe my brushes on while I’m using them, but, dare I admit, I never actually wash my brushes and I suspect I should. I never use face powder. I have dry skin and powder makes it gross. I like the idea of blending between steps. I’ll have to try that, and the lipstick smudge tip too.

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. That’s why she suggests going over your face with the big brush, I suppose? I need some, but I prefer to use a mineral foundation/powder b/c it gives extra coverage and it’s not as drying.

  2. I love Sonia Kashuk – and her makeup products. So cool that you got to meet her and the tips are awesome. I totally need to do my eyes first as I normally do that towards the end of my routine. You look beautiful, no surprise.

  3. What a fun time you must have had! I’m curious to know what you think of the Sonia Kashuk makeup line and the brushes? I haven’t used her makeup and I think I have one of her brushes. Going to try the eye makeup before foundation tip. Seems to make sense.

    1. I love the brushes. I am using them already. I like some of the makeup more than the rest. I love her eyeliner. Goes on really nice. The foundation didn’t have enough coverage for me and didn’t wear as well as I’m used to. And the eye shadow seemed to disappear after a day of travel, but perhaps if I’d used more it might have held up better. I will definitely buy her eye liner and I’m loving the new lipsticks!
