Spring Outfit: How to Wear a Neck Scarf #FashionFriday

Hello, Friday! This week has flown for me, how about you? It is not only Friday, it is also day 3 of 27 Days of Spring Fashion.

If you’re just now tuning in, I’m teaming up with Cyndi from Grace + Beauty, and we’re each styling a new spring outfit every day (except Sundays) for the entire month of March. That’s a total of 54 outfits for your spring style inspiration! If you missed the first two days, you can catch up HERE.

Styling a simple spring outfit showing how to wear a neck scarf, a popular fashion trend for spring 2017! The distressed jeans keep it from being too sweet.

The neck scarf trend is really hot right now. I’m seeing these everywhere, and I think it’s such a cute way to elevate a basic look. Take for example this outfit — a simple scoop neck tee, white jeans, and espadrille sandals would be fine on their own (and let’s face it, that’s what I live in for most of the spring and summer!) But when you add a printed neck scarf, suddenly you have a stylish outfit that can take you almost anywhere.

Spring Outfit with Neck Scarf

This silk neck scarf is from LOFT, and it’s 40% off! It’s hard to see from the way I have it folded, but there is some blush in the floral print, which I thought coordinated nicely with this tee.

SALE ALERT >> Everything at LOFT is 40% off right now with code NEWNOW, plus you will receive $50 in LOFTCASH for every $50 you spend.

The easiest way to wear a neck scarf is to tie it in a simple knot. First, I folded it into a triangle, and then I just rolled it up, put it around my neck, and tied it into a loose knot. You can play around with it to see how tight you want it. I think when a scarf is skinnier, it looks better to tie it a little tighter. You can wear it right in the middle of your neck, but I like to turn mine to the side a bit, like you see here.

This linen scoop neck tee is from Banana Republic, and it runs small. I’m wearing the medium, and even the medium is pretty fitted, so I’m hoping it doesn’t shrink in the wash. This “blushing pink” color is on sale for $23.

While I love this blush color, it’s probably not the best for my skin tone, so I like how the printed scarf brings more flattering colors near my face.

These Marc Fisher espadrilles spoke to me when I was shopping at Nordstrom back in January, and I snatched them right up. Now I’m seeing them everywhere. I thought they were a nice alternative to the other Marc Fisher style that’s so popular.

They come in mushroom, cognac, black, and the blush suede that I’m wearing. They’re super comfortable and easy to walk in. With a 4 1/4″ heel and a 1 3/4″ platform, you don’t feel like you’re walking in heels, but you get the benefit of the added height.

I like how these distressed white jeans add some texture to the outfit and keep it from being too sweet. These are actually part of the Shopbop Go Big Sale that is running right now, and I absolutely love them. I think I got them around this time last spring, and they’ve held up extremely well. They’re super comfortable and have just the right amount of distressing (in my opinion!)

Of course, I know not everyone can get behind the destructed denim trend, and that’s totally fine. Wear whatever you are most comfortable in. However, if you do like them, but you’re afraid to try them or you’re wondering if you are too old, I say, nonsense! It’s not about age, it’s about your personal style aesthetic. If you like them, you can totally wear them.

Finally, Kate Spade is running a 25% off sale through Sunday! That includes this mylie hobo in the rose cloud that I’m carrying here, as well as the grey and pink versions that are already on sale, so an additional 25% off that!

Also, this bag is a great faux leather alternative for $35.

This is the type of look I love to put together because you can recreate it with what you have in your closet or with your favorite retailers at any price point. (But definitely grab one of these scarves while they’re 40% off! LOFT has a ton of cute ones to choose from.)

  1. I totally agree about the neck scarf, it’s the perfect accessory to dress up an otherwise basic look! I love these perforated wedges, too! Marc Fisher has the cutest sandals. Have a great weekend!

    1. Yes, I also wore those in the 70’s but it’s a classic case of what’s old is new again. Looks great, by the way.

  2. I LOVE (i know I shouldn’t yell—but I’m so excited) this neck scarf look! In fact, I wore it in real life yesterday for that same reason (and to keep warm).
Man, your look reminds me of spring, Jo-Lynne!! We get to visit Phoenix next weekend, so I’ll be able to know what it’s like to wear short sleeves again—ha ha!! And to bare my tootsies—eeekk—i better go get a pedi!!

  3. I’m loving this blush and white! It’s like these pieces were made for each other. Those wedges are just gorgeous!
By the way, I got an email about 25% at off Kate Spade with code purpose 🙂

  4. I love neck ties and I just picked up a bunch from Forever 21 for about $1.00 each! Fabulous spring look. I love the blush tee and you’re right, the necktie really adds a lot to the outfit.

  5. Your hair and makeup look so good and the scarf brings the eye right to your face! I think I’ll have to try this look!

  6. Jo-Lynn, you look so beautiful with this outfit!! How can white jeans be sooo flattering??
And those shoes!!!! I am going to have to find something similar!! I just need a lower price point….. 🙂

  7. You know I always thought of wearing silk scarves with just dressy items but this is sooooo cute and it does really elevate the look. So I went and bought some scarves at Loft just now – can’t beat the 40% off plus the $50 in Cash if you spend $50!

Now I can’t wait to get my scarves and wear them with a casual look. 😉

BTW – tell you husband Happy Birthday and that 48 isn’t the end of the world (this coming from a 55 year old). LOL.

  8. I was hesitant at first to try out this type of scarf as I associated it with more ‘mature’ ladies, lol. But the way you style it, with the jeans and sassy sandals, it works! Now I have a scarf to shop for!

  9. Jo-Lynne, You look fabulous in this outfit! The scarf is stunning. I guess for women like me that get really hot on the back of my neck, I could leave the scarf tied loosely. It definitely changes up the outfit.

    Have a blessed weekend!

  10. Another great outfit! I agree that the distressed jeans add a little bit of edge to the outfit. I’m not a fan of distressed jeans for my own lifestyle but I like the way they look on others. What really makes the outfit for me are the shoes. The heavier shoe with the heal balances out the extra weight that the scarf brings to the top of the outfit. It also makes the outfit a tad less casual which fits with the scarf. Scarves, for me, always elevate an outfit beyond the basic, casual, “what-I-would-wear to the grocery” store level. I have a whole box of neck scarves in my closet. They were a staple of my professional wardrobe back in the 90’s and 00’s. Looking forward to wearing them again :).

  11. Well it will probably take me a bit to get on the scarf band wagon. LOL… It looks cute on you and others but sometimes I just have to come around to new things. Love those wedges. I know the platform helps with balance, but I’m still a little worried I’ll manage to fall off of them and break an ankle.

  12. Jo-Lynne, you look fabulous and if I didn’t know you live in PA, I’d think you were somewhere much warmer. Ha, ha. You look ready to do the outdoor mall, the beach boardwalk or an outside cafe…but it has to be a bit warmer. It is snowing here in Ohio today! Yuck. I am so over it. I love the blush color and I think adding the scarf really packs a punch. Great look. – Amy

  13. You look stunning!! Have you seen where they tie the scarf on the wrist? I like that look too. I think I’m going to have to get that purse now. Have you seen the grey in person? I would love a light grey for Spring as I’m just not a pink girl.

    1. I did see it and it is gorgeous. I already have a grey bag, and I was specifically looking for one that had some blush undertones to it, so I went with this one. But the grey is a nice mid-range shade that would work all year round.

  14. If you could pick one purse that you could carry with everything. Which one would it be? What color?

    1. Ooooooh good question. It depends on the season, but something in the grey/beige/taupe range – actually, right now, this rose cloud is perfect. It has hints of grey, pink, and beige, so I feel like it works with almost anything. But I think it’s more of a spring/summer color. In the winter, I probably carried my black bag the most, or the grey. I think for me, grey is the most versatile color, but that is because I wear a lot of cool tones. Some people would say cognac.

      1. Great advice! I want to invest in a bag. But I am just not a change bag for every outfit kind of gal! I am more of a change the bag for the season! lol

  15. Just wanted to let you know that suddenly I’m not receiving your daily post in my mailbox. I received it March 1 but not yesterday or today. I tried to just resubscribe, but I get a message saying I’m already subscribed. I wanted to let you know in case I’m not the only one having trouble. Thanks!

  16. Sweet as sugar in that blush but you are right, it is very close in color to your great complexion. The scarf is perfect for kicking thing up a bit. Great fit on the tee. Hope it doesn’t shrink. I hang-dry most of my clothes because one good dinner out and nothing fits anyway. Can’t afford to chance shrinkage in the dryer. How do you have your tee tucked…not exactly tucked, but rolled under? Love how you did that.

  17. My husband always says I’m trying to look french when I wear a neck scarf like that. I have a significant silk scarf selection and use them regularly. Is this the only tie that is showing up? Also, mine always shifts to the front rather than the side and then I have to keep fussing with it. Tips??

    1. My husband said the same thing when I wore one for the first time, lol! What do you mean, is this the only tie that is showing up? The LOFT website has quite a few: https://rstyle.me/n/cg7w6mgthw

I don’t have any great tips for keeping it in place. I will try tying mine tighter next time and see if that helps.

  18. These colors are very flattering for you! Brings out the best of your natural coloring and vibrance! I have an outfit with these colors that I have been waiting to wear as this has been a long winter here!
