My New Love Affair ::

True confessions: the main reason I wanted to switch to an iPhone was for that nifty app.

(Of course, the irony here is, Instagram is soon coming to Android. Oh well, too late!)

Oh wait. Before you ask.

What is

According to their site:

It’s a fastbeautiful and fun way to share your life with friends through a series of pictures.

Snap a photo with your iPhone, choose a filter to transform the look and feel, send to Facebook, Twitter or Flickr – it’s all as easy as pie. It’s photo sharing, reinvented.

Oh yeah, did we mention it’s free?

When I decided to delve a little further, I discovered that the name of the app was inspired by the desire to capture and combine the magic of the Polaroid pictures of old with the immediacy of a telegram. Clever, huh?

When I describe Instagram, I like to say that it’s a cool way to share your life in photos.

It allows you to take your basic iPhone camera photos, crop them, and then apply any one of a vast array of filters that instantly transform your plain camera phone pictures into stunning works of art. Here you can see some of the filters you can choose from.

For example, I took this boring tree photo . . .

and turned it into this . . .

And that Santa picture I posted the other day? It started out like this . . .

With Instagram, in a matter of mere seconds, I had this . . .

I mean, seriously, HOW FUN IS THIS? To say that I’m mildly addicted is . . . well . . . putting it mildly. HA!

Sharing is Easy

Instagram also makes it easy to share your jazzy photos with your other social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, or you can zap them out in an email to anyone who isn’t on the social media band wagon just yet.

Not Just Photos!

What I didn’t realize about instagram until I started using it is that it’s actually a social network too.

I know, I KNOW. Who really wants another social network to keep up with? Certainly not me! But this one is fairly unobtrusive.

On your iPhone, you can see your feed — which is basically a timeline of the photos of everyone you follow. Or you can select a specific person and see only his or her feed. Here is mine.

And each picture has the option of having a caption and a location attached to it. So if you use it often, you end up with a mobile photo album. See what I mean? Life in photos!

You are also able to leave comments on individual photos or on people’s profiles, so you get that instant gratification which we modern consumers all love so much! Oh admit it, you know you do.

And you can click the heart under anyone’s photo, adding it to your favorites. The most popular photos (the ones that receive the most hearts, I assume) are visible if you click on that Popular tab you see in the photo above. So, like all other social networks, there is an element of popularity contest involved. But for me, it’s more about sharing my life in photos, and the community that I’m building with those I follow.

So, there you have it! Everything you wanted to know (and probably more) about Instagram and why I’m an addict already.

In fact, I like it so much, I think I might start posting my favorite Instagram photos each week. That might make a fun carnival, dontchathink? Who’s in?

I love Instagram! I take so many more pictures because of it. There is already a carnival, Insta-Friday, hosted by someone (MarathonBird usually links up, so you could find it there). I’m sure you know you can also import photos you took on your phone but not in IG. I use Camera+ sometimes for more editing options and then share on IG. It is just so fun.

Also, now there is where you can have magnets made from your IG feed. So fun! I have some on my fridge of my favorite pics. Will be ordering some for godparents too. They are not super strong magnets, so really decorative rather than useful, but still fun.

I just got an iPhone 2 weeks ago and instagram was one of the first apps I downloaded. It is so cool. I had been coveting it on friends phones forever!
