How to Find Your Bra Size

How to Find Your Bra Size | Musings of a Housewife

Last summer I wrote what turned out to be a very popular post on the importance of proper undergarments. It was so well received that I decided that it’s time for another reminder. In this post, we’re going to focus on one specific undergarment: your bra. More specifically, how to find your bra size.

Sorry, men, but you may want to take a rain check on this one! If the title didn’t already scare you off.

It’s not always the most popular fashion topic, the bra. I mean, I can think of a LOT of things I’d rather shop for, but if you’re wearing the wrong size bra, you might as well forget about those cute boots or fabulous statement necklace, because everyone is going to be too distracted by the fashion emergency taking place in front!!

Little known fact about me: I used to work in a lingerie store. And guess what? It is estimated that 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size.

Crazy, right!?? So don’t assume that just because you’ve been wearing the same size for the last 10 years that it is still the right size for you. Our bodies change and our bra sizes can fluctuate with weight gain, child bearing and just age in general. So it’s always a good idea to get a new measurement every year or so.

In fact, a bra is only supposed to last you about six months. So take a look at your lingerie drawer and see if you need to do some updating.

Here are a few tips that will help you know if you need new bras or if you’re wearing the wrong size.

5 Signs That You Need New Bras

1. The elastic in the band appears puckered and shows signs of wear. It’s probably not gonna do a very good job of keeping the girls in place if it’s all stretched out. Time for new bras!

2. Do your, ahem, bosoms pop out over the top of the bra cup? Also known as the quadraboob. Oh yes, I’m going there! If you can see this happening under your shirts, your cup size is probably too small. Go up a cup size and see how it looks. Also, different brands and different styles will fit differently, so try a few to see which works best for your body type.

3. Does your bra strap ride up in the back? Or do your straps cut into your shoulders? This means that your band size is probably too large. You may need to go down a band size and up a cup size. Try it and see if it’s more comfortable!

4. Does your bra feel too tight, creating a bulge of skin in the back? Your band size is probably too small. Go up a band size and then see if you need to adjust the cup size or not.

5. Does your bra cup gape or wrinkle? Your cup size is probably too big. Try a size smaller and see if it looks better. But please avoid the quadraboob (see #2 above.) If you’re going to err on one side or the other, this is definitely the side to err on.

How to Measure Your Bra Size At Home

Not sure where to start? Kohl’s is sponsoring this post, and they have provided this nifty bra measurement tool to help you determine your correct bra size. It’s not a fool proof method, but it’s a great place to start. Try it and see how the results compare to your current bras.

Then take a little trip down to your neighborhood Kohl’s and take a look at their bra collection.

  1. I’ve taken advantage of that coupon deal twice in the past week! It was waaaay past time to purchase some new support for the girls. Plus I love that Kohls allows you to use up to 2 codes online!

It took me years before I found the style of bra that I liked and would do the job properly. Now I buy one brand and one brand only, Vanity Fair. For me they trump Victoria’s Secret BIG time, which is where I used to shop exclusively because my size is hard to find.

A good fitting bra can definitely make ALL the difference!

  2. I was just at Kohl’s wish I knew about this coupon, will definitely be using it because I am in dire need of a well-fitted bra – Thanks.

  3. Oh lardy. I’ve been pregnant and nursed 6 babies so my size is all over the map depending on what my youngest baby is doing. Lol! Add to that, my left is a cup size bigger than right. It was the “favorite” side. I think I’ve given up on finding a perfect fit!

  4. I can never find the perfect size since they don’t make bras small enough for me. 🙂 Also difficult when one side in a bit bigger than the other.

  5. Thank you for the info. I can never get a proper bra to fit .I’m now wearing 48 DD and I have to sew on either side. I’m now looking at wearing size 42J. Your assistance would be most grateful. Awaiting a reply soonest.
