Fashion Over 40: Daily Mom Style 05.06.15

Welcome back to my weekly post where I share what I wore this week and link up with other fashion bloggers around the web. I’m just your typical suburban mom trying to stay fabulous after 40 and sharing what I learn along the way. I hope you find some spring fashion inspiration here!

I was traveling for the better part of this past week. For those who haven’t been following along, I attended the Mom 2.0 Summit in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was 100 degrees, so my goal was to look professional and put together without being uncomfortably hot.

The first day of the conference, I wore this Dot Fuse Dress from Athleta. I picked it up on their 20% off sale a few weeks ago. (Thank you, Darcie, for taking these pictures for me! We walked all over the resort in the heat of the day to find a shady spot, bless her heart.)

I love the structured material and the color blocking. It is shapely in all the right places, but it doesn’t hug anything you don’t want hugged, if you get my drift. I was up a few pounds on this trip, plus I was retaining water because of the heat, and I still felt good about the way I looked in this dress. I got tons of compliments too. Plus has moisture wicking qualities and has vented fabric in the back, so it kept me cool all day long.

I don’t have a photo of the dress I wore the first night, except this one of me with Steph and Darcie.

It’s the same one I wore to dinner with my family when I was in Arizona a few weeks ago. I picked it up on sale at Nordstrom last summer before I went to Costa Rica, and it’s come in handy quite a bit since then. Unfortunately, everything in this outfit is old, and I don’t have any product links for ya.

I didn’t get any more outfit pictures in Arizona. I didn’t have my photographer-hubby with me, and I felt dumb asking my friends to take pictures of me everywhere I went, lol!! I wish I’d gotten a picture wearing my Blogger Life Tee, though. I thought it was cute with my white jeans and black sandals. It was the right crowd for it, and I got a lot of compliments.

It has suddenly turned quite warm here in Philly, and I’ve been spending most of my time at home, so my outfits are pretty casual. I wore this on Sunday to go out to eat with the family and then to hang out with friends in the ‘hood.

Fashion Tip for Women Over 40: Cuff your straight-leg jeans to get cropped jeans.

White and denim is so crisp and clean, and I love this easy tee from White House Black Market. I cuffed my jeans to make them cropped, and I accessorized with gold jewelry.

I wore these adorable Brielle Sandals that were sent to me from The Walking Company. I love that they have arch support and ball-of-foot metatarsal support. So, so comfortable.

Plus the rhinestone medallion is a great little embellishment and keeps them modern.

And I wore this on Monday, just hanging out at home… my Ramones tee from Kohl’s and my old faithful cuffed denim Bermuda shorts. We thought it would be fun to get a picture of my outfit sitting down, since I feel like I’m always standing in the same pose for these photos, but no sooner had I sat down than Savannah hopped up into my lap. She always does this when I go sit down outside.

So I just gave up on my outfit pictures and started loving on her. My daughter kept snapping pictures, and I couldn’t resist posting them. I love that little mutt. She keeps me company all day while I’m at home.

Finally, I wore this yesterday. Leave Nothing But Footprints sent me some summer clothes to sample, and this Carly Skirt is one of them. I love the diagonal striped paneling and the side slit. This skirt is so comfortable and easy to wear. The lightweight bamboo fabric is soothing, and the pattern is flattering.

It was a hot day so I paired it with a tank top. I know that the outfit would be more flattering with a structured jacket — I’d totally wear this with my denim jacket on cooler days — but it was far too hot for that, so I just did the tank and skirt thing.

  1. I love the dress you wore in the first picture! I am trying to find something in red for my son’s confirmation in 3 weeks and my trouble is short and stout, so certain things cling to places I don’t like. Do you have recommendations?

Love all the outfits you shared, and would have loved to have been in Arizona!

    1. Hey Jen! My best advice is to look for a fabric that has some weight to it, so it doesn’t cling, and then make sure it is cut in a way that is structured – either an A-line, that floats away from the body and disguises larger hips, or a sheath style that highlights your curves – depending on what you’re going for. Does that help?

OR. Those stretchy twist dresses – like the black and white one I wore to the baptism and the navy blue one that I wore to that Bubby’s Cookoff – those also tend to be forgiving, even though they’re clingy. I can’t explain it, I guess it’s the ruching. You might try that style too. Ross had a few when I was there. I bought 2! (Posting both tomorrow.)

  2. I’m with you white + denim is always great!! I LOVE that white top from WHBM, I might have to check into that one. I purchased the cutest maxi skirt from J Crew last fall (HUGE sale price too) and it’s navy with gray stripes and a runched waistband and I have yet to wear it. 🙁 I love the way they look on everyone else but every time I put it on I feel frumpy. Any thoughts besides a tank? The girls and I feel very self conscious just wearing a tank.

  3. If it’s not too personal, I’m curious as to what kind of undergarments you wear under your tanks to keep from exposing straps? Love the outfits, particularly the casual ones! I’d love a post on your thoughts/take on white shirts. I bought this one from Loft recently and while I love it, I am wondering if it should be more structured? https://www.loft.com/linen-cotton-henley-shirt/360983?colorExplode=false&skuId=18835212&catid=catl000011&productPageType=fullPriceProducts&defaultColor=9000
I’m thinking with statement necklace and skinny jeans, cuffed, I’d be okay. I’d love your thoughts!

    1. I don’t mind at all. I get that question a lot, actually, lol. I wear this bra almost exclusively – bit.ly/wacoalembrace
I have it in about 5 colors. It works great under tank tops but gives me enough support, which is hard to find.

As for the shirt, I have a hard time with that style. I definitely think it would be cute with cuffed jeans and a statement necklace. If you feel it needs more structure, you could try belting it. Or wear it unbuttoned over a colorful tank top?

      1. Similar, but different, from this big white shirt, I got a loose fitting western style button-up shirt by Arizona (Penney’s) in shades of pink and white. I am thinking of wearing it over a solid tank. Should I wear it open, or partially buttoned up? With denim, of course.

  4. Love all of your ourfits! I agree white and denim is a great combination! And although I loved all of your pics, I especially LOVE the ones with “Savannah” TOO CUTE! 🙂
