Fall Sweater Dress Outfit with Booties

Hello, friends. Happy Tuesday! I’m back today for Day 17 of 26 Days of Fall Fashion with a casual sweater dress outfit.

While I’m not a huge fan of dresses in general, something about a sweater dress has always appealed to me. Perhaps it’s because it’s more relaxed than the structured sheath dresses I’m typically drawn to, and I love the casual vibe. Plus a sweater dress is cozy and perfect for pairing with boots on a crisp fall day.

This is the BB Dakota Marisa Cowl Neck Sweater Dress, and it’s currently available at Nordstrom in black and oatmeal. I purchased this redwood color last week, but all of the sudden that color is gone from the Nordstrom website. I did find the redwood on Shopbop, though, and there’s a pretty latte color at Swell that’s marked down to $40! (It is $98 at Nordstrom and $105 at Shopbop.)

This dress is really cute on, plus it’s soft and comfortable. It skims the body nicely without clinging, and I like the drapey cowl neck and split step hem. The chunky ribbed knit is cozy for fall, and when it gets colder, you can layer a long sleeve tee underneath or throw a jacket or cardigan over top. For size reference, I’m wearing the medium.

Here’s a look at the back, and pretend I ironed it. Ha!

My only complaint with this dress is that it’s cut a bit low under the arms, but if you have a bra that works with it, it’s not a big deal.

For jewelry, I kept it simple. I wore chunky silver hoops, my mixed metal link ring, and a couple of Yurman bracelets on my watch arm. These are all pieces that were gifts from my husband over the years.

The polish on my fingernails is CND Fedora. I love deep nail colors in the fall. I have a dark gunmetal grey on my toenails, but I can’t remember the name. It’s an Essie color.

I paired this dress with the Katleen Peep Toe Booties from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. They are FINALLY back in stock, although a few sizes are already gone. This is such a great transition shoe. The low vamp and curved slit ankle is flattering and helps to visually elongate the leg, and the chunky stacked heel adds height with plenty of stability. I’m kind of wishing I’d bought them in black, though. I’ve seen a few other bloggers wearing the black, and I really love how they look on.

I thought this Angled Leather Day Clutch in the grey snakeskin was cute with this outfit. I purchased it a month or so ago, thinking it would be a nice piece to have on hand to jazz up date night outfits and such. Naturally, it went on sale and then sold out. Ba-dum-cha!!! I have a gift, it appears, for finding the products that will sell out the fastest. Ha! It’s a bummer because it was affordable, and I can’t find anything quite like it to link you to. At the moment, it is still available in the Tan Sparkle Lizard (and on sale for $46) but I don’t know how long that will last.

This bag has a chain that you can choose to use or not. I usually opt to use it. While it’s kind of chic to hold a clutch, it’s not very practical. I prefer to have my hands free, so it’s definitely something to consider when purchasing a clutch.

This outfit will be perfect for church this fall and other events that require something other than the jeans that tend to monopolize my closet. I’m still on the lookout for a good sweater dress with long sleeves, though. If you know of a nice one, let me know!

I hope your week is off to a good start! I finally got around to listing some of my clothing and shoes to sell over on @shopjolynnescloset. It’s a separate Instagram account I keep for selling things I’m ready to part with. Most are like new. If you wear a size 8 or medium in apparel, and/or a size 8 or 8.5 in shoes, you may want to check it out. There are a few handbags for sale as well.

Today my goal is to bang out a couple of posts and get my office organized. I hope you have a fantastic Tuesday!

Don’t forget to visit Cyndi and see the fall outfit she’s styling today!

  1. I do love sweater dresses—let’s just say I have a few—ha ha!
The color is perfect for fall, and the booties are perfect with it!
It is usually an easy fix to close up that opening a bit under the arms if it bothers you—I think that’s easier than having to remember to wear a certain bra!

  2. I just purchased a great long sleeve (more 3/4) sweater dress by Clavin Klein at Macy’s yesterday (I can only find the plus size version online however mine is a medium 8-10) for an upcoming winter wedding, It’s a plum color but I am having a hard time figuring out what to wear for shoes? I think boots would work but what kind? I need help!

    1. Hey Kim. I think beige or taupe colored booties are ideal because they are close to flesh tone and help your legs look longer. You can also wear knee-high or OTK boots if you like that look. With plum, grey is pretty!

      1. The wedding is in January, in PA! (what are they thinking?) So I don’t think booties will work but I like the idea of grey boots with the plum color! The dress comes down too long for OTK boots. But the boot should have a heel right? Not a flat riding boot?

        1. Ohhhhh… I was thinking this time of year. Then I say definitely knee-high boots with a heel.

I went to a January wedding in New England once. It’s risky, and it did snow, but just enough to be beautiful. It was really perfect. 🙂 Our bridesmaids dresses were a deep midnight blue velvet.

  3. This dress looks really nice on you with the ankle boots…..very sophisticated but it looks like you pulled off the look effortlessly. I also like it that you show a lot of jeans- that’s the item of clothes I need to wear most often and need the most help with!

  4. This is a great dress Jo-Lynne! I agree that is very versatile and a piece you can get a lot of use of. One question, does the back hang down a little longer than the front? It seems to in some of the pictures. Thanks & have a blessed day!
