Fashion Friday: Fall Leather Jacket Outfit

Good morning! Happy Friday. Today I’m styling a fall leather jacket outfit that can be a template for so many outfit variations.

I think I probably speak for all of us when I say, I am more than ready for the weekend. Can I get an amen? I wish I could just hibernate with a good book and an endless cup of coffee all weekend, but we have a lot going on including my son’s 17th birthday party. Seventeen. Seven plus Ten. I am officially old, y’all. How did we get here?

I guess it was inevitable. After all, Time and tide wait for no man. Or, as the wise Truvy once said, Honey, time marches on and eventually you realize it is marchin’ across your face. Truer words were never spoken.

Anyway, let’s move on to more pleasant topics, like fashion! Last year when I discovered Trunk Club — the personal shopping service owned by Nordstrom — this leather jacket was my very first purchase.

I had been wanting a leather jacket in a color for a long time, and this deep plum color pairs well with denim and grey and black — the neutrals I tend to wear most. It felt (and smelled) fantastic. Haha! There’s nothing like the smell of leather. When I put it on, it fit to a T, and I knew I wasn’t going to want to part with it.

I enjoyed wearing it some last spring, and I’ve been looking forward to wearing it again ever since I packed it away at the end of the season.

This outfit is simple but the color combination is pleasing, and it’s versatile enough to wear in a variety of situations. I can easily swap out the booties for flats or tall boots depending on the occasion.

I’m wearing the Caslon Slub U-Neck Tee in Beige Rainy Day. This runs large, so you’ll probably want to size down. I’m wearing the small.

My jacket is no longer available, but this Bernardo Quilted Leather Moto Jacket is gorgeous in the Deep Wine color, and it’s on sale. And this BLANKNYC Leather Moto Jacket is more of a red, but it is gorgeous!

There’s just something so chic and sophisticated about a leather jacket. I’ve always had a black leather jacket in my closet, but I’m enjoying a color for a change.

I believe this is one of those wardrobe pieces worth splurging on. I’ve had a faux leather jacket, and it looked fine, but I found that I got oddly sweaty when wearing it, even when it wasn’t hot outside. There’s certainly nothing wrong with faux leather, but I think it’s worth it to save up and invest in the genuine article.

That said, I know we all have different budgets, and Forever 21 makes several cute and affordable faux leather versions here and here.

The booties I’m wearing are the Vince Camuto Feina Booties from the #NSale. They’re almost sold out, but of course there is no shortage of ankle boot options these days!!! I really like the Franco Sarto Delancy in the Dark Khaki Suede. It also has a slightly lower heel at 3 inches.

And these are my AG Ankle Super Skinny Jeans, which are currently 25% off at Nordstrom. Woot!!! I like this dark wash for a dressier look. I think these run a little on the large side. I like that they’re not super skin tight, but I think they’re supposed to be. A great budget option is the Wit and Wisdom Stretch Denim Skinny Jeans for $69.

I wore silver teardrop earrings and a long silver charm necklace. Both are old and no longer available. Same for my French Grey Tory Burch crossbody, but the Tory Burch Britten Combo Crossbody also comes in French Grey, and I also really like the Thea Foldover Messenger. For a more budget-friendly option, Sole Society has this Vanessa Crossbody for $39, and Target has this lighter grey crossbody for $34.

I’m still loving my Maui Jim Moonbow sunnies in Pink with Pink Tokyo that I received as part of a campaign I did with Maui Jim back in the summer. They work in great with the color of the leather jacket.

This outfit is a basic template with so many possible variations. Swap out the ankle skinny jeans for bootcut jeans and the booties for pumps. A black or grey tee would change the way you look at the outfit, allowing the jacket to be the anchor. If I did a black or grey tee, I’d go with black or grey booties. I like the way the beige tee draws the eye in and creates a column, but I’ve worn this jacket both ways.

One of my favorite outfits with this jacket was with a black tee, grey jeans, and black booties for a fun GNO look. I also wore it with a grey tee and black distressed jeans with Chucks for a casual weekend look. If you don’t have a plum or burgundy leather jacket, a cardigan can achieve similar results.

  1. That jacket is gorgeous! The fit, color, and style are so perfect..likely one of my favorite pieces you’ve styled. I’ve been wanting one for awhile now, but I’ve been torn on which color to get. I try them on everywhere I go and have even ordered and returned one with no luck. I’m looking for faux because of cost per wear, but it would be hard to turn this one down if it was sent to me and looked this perfect, ha!

    1. It was definitely an investment. At the time, I didn’t have any Trunk Club credits. But I have worn it more than I thought I would, and I’m really glad I have it. I like the bomber style, I think it will be more long lasting than a moto style, which is still going strong, but I feel will eventually look dated. Keep looking! I hope you find something awesome! 🙂

      1. I have a faux leather jacket in that exact style and color. I always get compliments when wearing it. I think it makes our complexion look youthful. Lol

  2. Beautiful jacket, JoLynne. I love purple and I always thought if I ever could afford to buy a sports car, I would get a purple one. Ha, ha. Leather is such a great staple to have in a wardrobe and as you say there are so many possibilities, even with skirts! I’m jealous that you have a leather jacket in this color! The whole outfit is lovely and your pictures are amazing. Love the bridge and the fall trees in the background. Very pretty. Thanks for sharing and for hosting the link up. – Amy

  3. I LOVE your jacket and the one you linked too!!! I am so tempted. I tried on a fake one because I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money and it just didn’t work. Somethings you go big or just don’t do it in my opinion. Thanks for hosting!

  4. Hi Jo-Lynne, I don’t get much time and peace to comment these days (1 and 3 year old girls on the loose, ha), but I read you each day and you’ve changed me – I now shop much more intentionally, I feel much more stylish and current than I used to and am enjoying and wearing my clothes so much more. I love 80% of my closet, wear it loads, and am working on the other 20% and adding pieces to it that I am missing that are ‘essentials’ and would add depth to my closet, but all in good time, because b-u-d-g-e-t !! LOL Your pieces inspire me – because I live in the UK I have to hunt around though to find similar things, but that’s part of the fun.
Anyway, this outfit is absolutely fantastic, you look so stylish AND effortless, the colour of the leather jacket is beautiful with your hair and complexion and the other colours in your outfit. I want it – but it’ll have to wait due to no extra cash at this time of year… I love that is has no collar, I don’t like jackets with collars much as I find it makes wearing scarves and jewellery awkward at times, and I love scarves and jewellery!
Have a wonderful weekend, touting your leather jacket!

  5. Beautiful jacket! Didn’t realize how versatile that color was until you showed a few variations with it. With my current lifestyle, I probably wouldn’t invest in the real thing, as far as the jacket, but for what you do, it would definitely be an investment piece. You’re right, nothing like the smell of real leather. I still have a black leather blazer in the closet, that I’m hoping will come back in style, LOL! Thank you yet again, for another great outfit! Enjoy the weekend!

  6. I started with Trunk Club several months ago and although some of their pieces are super steep in price, everything from them is well worth every penny 🙂 as clearly in the case of your leather jacket, Jo-Lynne, how beautiful and rich is that colour!!!

I’m talking about legacy on the blog right now. What it means to me. How I want the world to remember me. That and my weekly Project Sister Act Link-Up is currently live, and will be up until next Thursday, and I would so love for you to come over and join in xoxo

    1. I agree, the prices can be steep with Trunk Club, but I have selectively added a few pricier pieces to my wardrobe using Trunk Club credits, and I am very happy with them. I feel like they are investment pieces that I’ll have for a long time. Your legacy project sounds cool!
