Easy Summer Shorts Outfit

Hello, hello! I hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend. We’ll be hanging out here at home and grilling out with friends in the neighborhood later on. I started reading Hidden Figures when I was in Florida, and I’m hoping to finish that today. Big goals, I know!

I’ve been debating about what to post today. Cyndi and I weren’t planning an outfit today since it’s Memorial Day, but I’m not feeling inspired with any other ideas — which is strange because I usually have no shortage of ideas to blog about. I think I was already in outfit mode, so I decided to share a bonus summer outfit. (I’ve also updated my Memorial Day Sales post so if you’re shopping online today, be sure to check that out.)

This is a super easy summer look that is typical of what I wear on a daily basis during the warmer months.

Easy Summer Shorts Outfit for Moms

Nothing about this outfit is creative or unique, but it’s an example (I hope) of how proper fit and balance and a few fun details can elevate a sloppy t-shirt and shorts to a cute outfit.

I’m obsessed with this little twist front tee. It’s soft and comfortable but not too thin, the neckline is open enough to be flattering but it’s still modest, and it’s just $22. I picked it up in both the white and this burgundy color. (Pardon the wrinkles, I didn’t notice them till I uploaded these pictures, yikes!)

Summer Shorts Outfit for Moms

These tees have sold out and been restocked so if you love it, I wouldn’t wait around for long. I’m wearing the medium, for size reference. This is the one they call burgundy beauty, but it looks more red on the website than it really is. It actually has a lot of purple in it, although these pictures make it look a little bit brighter than it is in person.

I paired this cute top with my go-to jean shorts from last year, and I wore my new gold gladiator sandals that I found on sale last week. If you struggle to find shorts that fit and are flattering, I have a whole post on shorts for moms that you might find helpful.

There is no “right length” of shorts — it depends on your body type and your lifestyle and comfort level, but I feel best in shorts that are 3 or 4 inches in length. It’s also important to find shorts that aren’t too wide, which can look frumpy. I look for shorts that fit close to the leg, and this isn’t always easy to find. I try on a ton of shorts every summer and usually end up only keeping one or two pairs. The pair I’m wearing here is from last year so I’m linking to this pair at LOFT for a similar option. Bonus, they’re on sale!

An easy summer shorts outfit that's perfect for casual days at home or vacation. The key to keeping this look from being frumpy is proper fit and cute accessories!

I wasn’t sure I’d like these sandals when I got them on, but as it turns out, they’re really cute and quite comfortable too. I wore them all day on Friday. The gladiator style is still going strong this season, and I like how these keep the outfit modern and on trend while still being practical and comfortable.

They’re also getting low on sizes, but I also like these a lot. In fact, I keep wondering if I should have ordered them instead because I hate futzing with buckles when I’m getting dressed and I find myself going for my slip-on sandals most often. Also, the sandals I have are available at Nordstrom in this blonde color, but they’re not on sale. I just mention them because I’ve had a couple people tell me they’re calling around, trying to find these in their size.

Also, I realize these are a little bit spendy so I linked a few similar styles for less at the end of this post.

Another one of my tips for making sure your t-shirt and jean shorts outfit looks put together is to be sure to accessorize. I decided to forego my usual long pendant necklace and wear these link chandeliers instead.

I typically go for smaller earrings for everyday, but I really like how the earrings echo the gold from my sandals and they keep the look feminine. (They’re also on sale right now!) Then I just added some Alex and Ani bangles and my usual mixed metal ring.

Finally, let’s discuss this bag. I am dubbing this the PERFECT summer tote!

I love it not only because the blue and white stripes are so fresh and summery, but it is REVERSIBLE. You turn it inside out, and you have a solid brown faux leather tote that will carry you right through fall and winter. Brilliant, yes!?!

It’s a great carry-all size. You can use it as your purse if you like to carry a lot or it would also make a nice bag for the pool or travel.

This outfit or a variation of it is pretty much what I wear everyday during the summer months. I like to find tops that are just a little bit different and pair them with shorts that fit well and are comfortable. Add sandals or fashion sneakers and a few accessories, and you’re good to go!

  1. Does the t-shirt run large at all, Jo-Lynne? I’d like to order, but the size I need isn’t available in the color I would like. Thanks for the bonus outfit, and enjoy your Memorial Day!

    1. I work at WHBM and find most of their things run a little big. I’m wearing a T right now that’s a M, but I wish I’d bought a S.

  2. This is a great ‘everyday’ summer look on you. Bright colors are truly beautiful on you.
Can you share the link for your watch? I know you’ve done so on many occasions but with Nordies sale and then their upcoming big sale in July hoping to find it for a few dollars less.
    Thanks much!

  3. Do you need a cami under the white tee? I might have to just get one since I’ve been admiring it for a while!

  4. Thanks for all your amazing posts! I just started reading and I’m totally hooked. I’m obsessed with this t-shirt too! Been wearing in white and just ordered the black. Now I’m thinking I should order that color! It looks so pretty! Thanks again!

  5. I know this probably tells my age but…….I think young Moms in their 20’s and 30’s look cute in short shorts but by the time Moms have teenagers, I think longer shorts are more appropriate. Like you, however, unless shorts fit close to the leg, they look frumpy.

  6. Well I have to say you look good in everything. I live in a very small town and it seems as if everyone wears athletic shorts and t shirts! Lol. I have bought both Bermuda ands shorter shorts but have not had weather to wear them. So getting to my question now. How do you find a pair of denim shorts that don’t seem to bag out? I don’t like tight things and I don’t like baggy. So what’s the secret?

    1. It takes a lot of trial and error, to be honest. And I hate to say it, but the premium denim definitely fits better than less expensive brands and doesn’t tend to stretch out as much. Kut from the Kloth makes a decent denim short that fits well, and LOFT does okay too. I love my pricey AG and Citizens but I know they are out of budget for many. Around here, most moms seem to wear jean shorts (various lengths.) I don’t see a lot of athletic shorts. Even Gap, Old Navy, and Kohl’s have nice looking ones, but you do have to try a lot on to find the ones that work best for you. It depends a lot on the size of your thighs. I think they look best when they fit close to the body but not too tight.

      1. Thanks. I help my mom with daycare so I would like to wear more denim shorts and t shirts. I don’t have big thighs or hips. I think that’s why they bag. Out. I will try premium denim and I won’t have buy very many.

        1. That, and just look for a slimmer fit, and size down if you are buying a brand that you think will stretch a lot. It’s tough b/c no one wants their shorts too tight… so it can be tricky.

  7. When I first saw this, I just assumed they added new colors in this top! I would’ve never known it was the burgundy one. I tried it in grey and white a few months ago but returned both for sheerness..now wishing I would’ve tried this one!

  8. Cute and comfortable! This outfit is also my everyday outfit for the summer. I am so glad you got those sandals. They are so cute! I know what you mean though about the convenience of slip-ons, but I think these really make your outfit stand out.

  9. I am so happy I ordered these shorts. I spent what felt like weeks trying on numerous pairs of shorts in various lengths and came home frustrated and empty handed each time.
These arrived yesterday and fit great.
    Thanks for sharing.

  10. Love the outfit! I ordered the twist front tee in XS, I’m hoping it shrinks a little. Did your tee shrink in the wash/dryer? I got the tee to go with the LOFT Bermuda raw edge denim roll shorts you recommended, yah!
