Summer 2017 Trend: Denim Tops

One of the big fashion trends this season is denim tops. If you’ve been reading here long, you know I love my denim so this definitely a bandwagon I can climb on!

Sometimes denim can be stiff to wear so I love to find tops that look like denim but they’re really a softer knit material that are dyed to look like denim. Case in point: this indigo cap sleeve top.

When I saw this top online, I didn’t order it because I thought it was denim and I imagined that it would be stiff and uncomfortable to wear. Lo and behold, I was in the store one day and came across it and realized it is actually a really soft cotton knit top that just looks like denim. Happy day!

Unfortunately, I think everyone else liked it too because it is almost sold out. If you’re an XS, grab it while you can because it’s on sale and will go fast. You also may be able to find one in your local LOFT store. It’s also available in petite sizes, by the way — and those are fully stocked.

FYI, it runs big; I am wearing the small and it is plenty roomy even after washing. (I washed it on cold and hung to dry before I photographed this outfit.)

If you like the style of the top and don’t care about the denim look, it also comes in red, yellow, and white and there are more sizes available in those colors. I like how it is loose but has some shape to it. The length is nice too. My only complaint is that blasted boob pocket. I hate those. Why do retailers do that? I should look into having it removed, but I’m afraid it will leave marks.

Since this post is about denim or denim-look tops, I wanted to share some other cute options. I love this denim tank, and this peplum tee is adorable in the denim color. This cold shoulder top is more of a sweatshirt, but it would be cute with white jeans on a cooler evening. I know everyone is getting tired of the off-the-shoulder style, but this chambray tie shoulder top is sooo cute.

For a lighter blue, this chambray tie waist top is fun, and while it’s not denim, this navy and white printed tie shoulder top looks great paired with white shorts as well. I hope that’s helpful. I hate to feature something that is pretty much sold out, but we took these pictures before I realized it.

Let’s talk shorts for a minute.

Shorts can be tricky, but in some climates they are a necessity. I recommend trying on a lot of different pairs, and just like jeans, always look at your rear view. I think shorts look best when they fit close to the body but aren’t too tight. If they stick out too far from the thighs, they can look frumpy.

I’ve had these white denim shorts for several years; I remember picking them up for a steal on an end-of-season sale back before I became such an AG fan. I wasn’t even searching for white jean shorts; I just saw them online and liked the sale price and lucked out that I really liked the fit. For me, these are perfect with a 22.5″ leg opening and a 3.5″ inseam. Now that I know those measurements work for me, I can compare when buying other shorts.

I know they’re spendy, even on sale, so I also found some other less expensive options to recommend.

These Kut from the Kloth cut-off denim shorts came in my last Trunk Club, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well they fit. I wore them all day and they didn’t bag out although they did stretch some in a comfortable way. They’re flattering from the rear view as well. They have a 4″ inseam and a 22″ leg opening. I also noticed that they have the same fabric content as the AG pair that I love — 98% cotton and 2% spandex.

Another pair I recommend looking at is this pair of denim flip cuffed shorts from LOFT. They’re definitely the most budget-friendly of the lot, and if you wait, they will probably go on sale.

And yes, I realize not every woman wants to wear their shorts this short. Definitely find the length that is the most flattering and comfortable for you. I’ve just ordered a few more pairs to try so I can report back, but since we are all built differently, what works for me may not work for you, and vice versa.

I accessorized with gold jewelry, and I also wanted to mention that my mixed metal bracelet watch by kate spade new york is 40% off at Nordstrom. I love this watch because it has both gold and silver links so it goes with all of my jewelry, and it looks good with casual and dressy outfits and everything in between.

I would normally wear an outfit like this with flat sandals or Converse, but I decided to take it up a notch with platform wedge espadrilles. Also, this Lucky Brand tassel hobo bag is marked WAY down — it’s on sale for $169 and then 50% off that, bringing it down to just $85! It is very good quality, and I personally think it’s the perfect size for everyday.

Denim tops are trending, but sometimes denim can be stiff to wear so I love tops like this that are made of a soft cotton knit and dyed to look like denim.

indigo cap sleeve top (also in red/yellow/white) // white shorts (similar for less) // taupe wedge espadrilles (similar for less) // grey tassel hobo ($85!!!) // Moonbow sunnies c/o Maui Jim // initial pendant // bracelets c/o Alex and Ani // beaded hoop earrings // mixed metal bracelet watch (40% off)

  1. LOVE this outfit – I just added the top to my “cart”………thanks for the heads up because I too looked at this online and went on my with my shopping thinking it would be thick and too hot for summer………..great find 🙂

  2. It’s nice to hear that this top isn’t “real” denim that is stiff & weird!! But I know what you mean about the pocket—I like interest on a shirt, but I don’t love that added volume on the chest—eeekk!!

ps…I remember once you talked about trying to add a little personal from your life in the emails—there’s a group of us keeping track of our month with a sentence a day, and I thought of you. If it’s something you’d be interested in—you could join in for June….

  3. You are preaching to the choir about the boob pocket! I dislike that so much…. I usually won’t buy a top that has one! How do comsumers get the word out to designers and manufactures about that sort of thing??? When so many of us think the same way about it…. one would think they would like to know????

  4. Hi Jo-Lynne, I love that outfit! I bought the Kut from Kloth white shorts and am eagerly awaiting. those. I hope your vertigo is better. I work in a pt office and we see tons of vertigo patients. There are special positioning techniques used to ease and eliminate vertigo symptoms. I hope you are feeling better.

  5. I actually just bought those white shorts from loft and I LOVE THEM!! I bought the same style in denim too!

  6. Morning! Looks so cute! The shorts are perfect on you! I bought this top a while back and have already worn it twice with distressed blue jeans. Next time I’ll go with a white bottom because they look awesome together!

  7. Love this, Jo-Lynne! Your legs look a mile long in this outfit! I wish I would’ve noticed this top while I was shopping their free shipping sale recently. I’ve always loved the look of denim tops but rarely wear them anymore because there so many more comfortable options. This is perfect. I actually don’t mind chest pockets either 😉

  8. I didn’t really like the denim look until this year and there are so many styles to choose from. Some of the more dressier looks I am even comfortable wearing to work. I found a very soft denim sleeveless collared shirt at Target over the weekend that I bought. I don’t wear sleeveless by itself but it will look great under a summer cardigan. I like the look you are styling today!!

  9. Well today I learned that I don’t like boob pockets either. Up until now they didn’t really bother me, kind of neutral about them. But when I saw today’s shirt, I didn’t really like it…and I normally adore the things you wear. When you mentioned the pocket and I pictured the top without a pocket, all of a sudden I realized I’d like the shirt a lot if it were blank. The pocket kind of takes it down a notch. Why, oh, why are pockets on all these tops? I do love the combination of the denim, white, and that taupe neutral. Looks super sophisticated.

  10. Wow!!! I must be the only one who likes the pocket on the shirt. I actually look for ones that have pockets to add interest and something different to my tee shirts etc. I usually find them at GAP. 🙂 Anyway, I think the shirt looks great on you and the pocket side view picture of you looks just fine. I wish I would have known about the Loft white shorts, as on Memorial Day I stopped in at Loft and they were having 40% off reg. price and 50% off sale and I bought the very same shorts in the darker denim. I love the fit. Not too short or to bermuda looking length. I don’t really like shorts so this was a good find for me. I might order the white online when they go on sale. Sometimes I find the white of any of their pants fit smaller than the denim in same size. It might just be because its white and feels like it shows more. I have a denim, soft shirt from GAP last year that goes great with white. You really look great in this outfit and the shorts fit you great. Thanks for all the infor. in this post.

    1. No, I too love the pocket! I do think it gives interest to the shirt. I bout her this shirt a couple of months ago in sale and I love it!

  11. Love the denim shirt, I don’t mind the pocket, I will be shopping for one today. You look super cute in the outfit and I love the way
you are wearing your hair. Looks great!

  12. Love the top,, I bought it when it first came out and it is my go-to shirt. Amazing fit and comfort!!! So cute on you!!!
