Daily Mom Style: Casual Fall Outfit for Women Over 40

While I’m focusing more on fashion here on the blog these days, and I have fun putting new looks together, I still spend many days in simple outfits because I’m at home most of the time. I mean, there’s no need to dress to the nines to greet the mailman.

That said, I’m grateful for the accountability of my weekly Daily Mom Style posts over the past few years because they forced me to get out of the yoga pants rut and put a little effort into myself. It really makes a difference in my outlook on life, and I know my kids and husband appreciate the effort as well.

While I won’t keep posting an entire week’s worth of outfits every Wednesday, I plan to keep Wednesdays dedicated to those simple everyday outfits that I wear when I don’t have anywhere special to go. If you’re at home every day as I am, perhaps it will inspire you to take a few extra minutes to put on pants that button and add an accessory or two. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, you know.

This is a typical daily outfit for me. I wore this casual outfit to my son’s band cavalcade last weekend.

While the daytime weather was lovely, we knew it would be cold in the outdoor stadium that night, so I decided to take my new BearPaw boots for a test drive. These were sent to me from Sole Provisions. They kept my feet cozy and warm all night long, and I was thankful I had them. It did get chilly!

I love the button details. I might have to fight my daughter to keep them. My 12-year-old was eyeing them up, and she wears the same size I do. By the way, these are a size 9. I usually wear 8 or 8.5 but the website advised to size up if you’re a half-size, so I requested the 9 and I’m glad I did. They fit perfectly, especially after I put my orthotics inside to give them more support.

The burgundy sweater came in my last LeTote. You may remember, LeTote is a fashion rental service. If you want to try it, signing up through my link will give you $15 your first month’s subscription. I wore this utility jacket (old; see below for links to similar products) and brought my puffy winter coat along with me just in case. My daughter ended up wearing it, so it’s a good thing I had it!

The jeans are also no longer available, but they’re my super skinny cropped jeans. I love how easily they fit into the boots – no rolling or tucking shenanigans required. If you’re in the market for jeans, ShopBop is having a 25% off Friends & Family Sale, and these are similar. For $169 + 25% off, they are $126.75, and that’s with free shipping. Use the code INTHEFAM25 for the discount!

  1. I recently started following your blog through Cindy Spivey. So glad I did. I’m a PA gal as well, only up here in the North Pocono region. Got a kick out of seeing your Camelback picture on Instagram, as its about 30 mins from where I live! I’m a 60 year old “full time” grandma, meaning we (Papa & I), volunteered to help out our families by getting the kids on & off the bus, as well as babysitting one rambunctious 2 year old every Thursday & Friday, along with our 4 year old grandson every Friday after pre-K. The reason I mentioned all this is because of what you said about the yoga pants, and trying to dress up somewhat. I was in the same rut, especially during the colder months up here. Sweats were the order of the day. After following Cindy for a number of months, then finding the link to your blog, I have been able to get out of that rut! I’m usually up at 6:30, since the kiddos come at 7. I now put on jeans (i have a wide assortment of colored jeans as well), a nice top, makeup & earrings. I’ve been skipping the lip gloss until after the kids are on the bus. They were wiping Grammy’s lip gloss off their checks before getting on the bus! And the little guy would literally run in the opposite direction if I tried to kiss him with lip gloss on. I love that your lifestyle is one of easy fashion but so stylish & comfy. I’ve added quite a few pieces to my wardrobe after seeing how you style basic elements. I’m also back in that season of my life with the 4 & 6 year olds getting involved in soccer & T-ball, so I appreciate the tips for making it though those chilly games. With all that being said, thank you so much for helping me reinvent myself! (And getting me out of those sweats)!! God Bless You & your family!

    1. Hey Gina! So glad you found me. 🙂 And I love that you’re full time grandparents. What a blessing to your children. I wish my mom and dad were closer. So glad you’re enjoying the blog!!!

  2. You’re outfit looks great, as usual. Thanks fo keeping us moms who are at home often up to date and thanks for motivating us to get ready and look nice!

  3. Super! Some thoughts: I would like to see you tuck your shirts in more often Jo-Lynne, at least in the front (just casually tuck a portion in above one pocket or to one side. You obviously love beautiful accessories, but the piece you choose will be much more appreciated if it does not compete with big earrings, a watch and multiple bracelets or necklaces; try cutting the accessories to one — I think you will like it. Too much effort, the appearance of, is aging. You have truly the face of classic beauty; when wearing long, dangling earrings, as you tend to, gather your hair into a chignon. Your earrings will be appreciated while at the same time, with the chignon, your beautiful face is open, you will complement your neck and jawline, and lengthen your look upwards rather than pulling it down. Your face (again, beautiful) is a long oval; your longer hair makes it appear even longer. Your blog is wonderful, fresh and real. I look forward to seeing if you try any of these petits changes. Merci!

  4. Great casual mom look as usual! I’m like you…it definitely makes me feel better about myself and more motivated every day if I get dressed and accessorized even if it is just for a playdate. I’m glad I’m not the only stay at home mom who does this. And, according some of my friends, I guess I am inspiring and motivating them to do more for themselves as well. And that was kind of my goal anyway! Rock on, Moms!
