Casual Winter Outfit Formula: Skinny Jeans + Solid Pullover + Scarf + Ballet Flats

Good morning! Happy Hump Day! Today Cyndi and I are launching a 5-part series on casual outfit formulas for moms (or all women, really!) We certainly don’t want to alienate women who aren’t moms.

I feel like this first one is a bit of a cop-out since it is pretty much what I wear all the time, but then, I certainly couldn’t do a series on casual outfit formulas and leave out my favorite!

Casual Winter Outfit Formula for Moms: Skinny Jeans + Solid Pullover + Scarf + Ballet Flats

The skinny jean/pullover/scarf/flats combo is one I wear over and over again, and it always looks put together as long as the pieces work together and fit properly.

Of course, just about any one of these components can be changed out to create another easy outfit. Swap the ballet flats for ankle boots or riding boots, swap the scarf for a long necklace, swap the skinnies for bootcut jeans, or jazz it up with a striped pullover or leopard flats for some fun pattern mixing. But if you’re at a loss, this basic outfit formula will serve you well for almost any casual occasion.

I picked up this classic crewneck pullover and the checked flannel scarf at the J.Crew Outlet last weekend. This sweater comes in 6 colors, and I love the classic fit. It’s so hard to find a sweater that isn’t long and baggy these days!

The scarf is a super soft flannel, and it’s not too thick so it drapes nicely and can be worn as part of your outfit or as outerwear.

When I wear a navy top with blue jeans, I try to wear a lighter wash denim so there’s some contrast, so I went with these old DL1961 Emma legging jeans for this post. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly version of these jeans, the Wit & Wisdom Ab Solution skinnies are a nice alternative for $69. They do tend to stretch, so you may want to size down.

I completed the look with grey ballet flats and tote.

I splurged on these Tory Burch Minnie travel ballet flats at the Nordstrom holiday party because it was a 10-point day for cardholders, and they never go on sale. I had wanted them for ages, and now that I’ve sprung for them, I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner. I find myself going for them almost every day. They’re just so cute and comfy, and they go with everything.

I still love my Sam Edelman Felicia flats, and comfort-wise, the Felicia flats are every bit as good as the Minnie flats, but sometimes the bow seems a little too precious. I like the medallion on the Minnie flats, and I love the French Grey color. I have a handbag in that color as well, and it’s so versatile.

This unlined tote is new. I ordered it because I often get requests to feature more affordable handbags, and this one is a great find! If leather isn’t important to you, this bag is a great size and shape, and I love the color. (It’s practically the same as the Tory Burch French Grey!) It comes with a removable zip-top pouch, it has a covered magnetic closure, and the sides are embellished with polished silver studs.

This bag actually reminds me a lot of this R Minkoff unlined studded tote that I’ve had my eye on for a while, but it’s a fraction of the price. If you are looking for a leather version of this bag, check out the R Minkoff one. It’s really sharp, and it’s currently on sale in the grey.

When I wear a scarf, I rarely wear a necklace, unless I’m planning to remove the scarf. Instead, I like to wear a bold earring. My current faves are these faux pearl double studs. I like how they show up in my dark hair, and they go with both gold and silver jewelry.

I got up early and curled my hair for this post because I always like my pictures better when my hair is curled, especially when I’m wearing a scarf. If you missed it, I posted a video tutorial on Monday with how I curl my shoulder-length hair.

My nail polish is CND Creekside. It’s a pretty, chalky blue, which is perfect for wintertime. I’m also wearing red lipgloss, which is a bit of a departure for me, but I’m so pale this time of year, and I thought it looked nice with the bold red and navy scarf.

  1. Perfect formula! You really can’t go wrong with something like this. Love this color combo too! I got the same scarf in a different print for Christmas and I just love it. It’s so much easier to work with than my other bulkier types.

  2. so cute – that bag looks amazing for the price………and I might need one of those sweaters and don’t even get me started on those flats, I’ve had them on my wishlist for a while 🙂

  3. Good morning! I love this look…its my everyday look as a homeschool mom! Just to make sure, the scarf that is pictured in the Shop The Post is a man’s scarf for $19.99 (red/black)…and the one listed below is a women’s for $24.99…the one you are wearing is red and blue, right? $24.99? Thanks so much…red and blue are two favorite colors to wear when I can’t wear pink! 🙂

    1. I’m sorry. Yes, it is the women’s one! For some reason, I couldn’t get a picture of the women’s one to come up in the red and navy check, but the men’s one did, and I think I got mixed up. I will fix it. Thanks for the heads-up! 🙂

    1. LOL, I don’t mind. 🙂 We get some mild weather here in PA (like today, it’s already in the 40s!) and I’m usually in the house most of the time. You can totally wear ankle boots or tall boots with this outfit, though.

  4. I have read the reviews for the sweater as I’m looking for a great non-baggy yet non classic sweater for our Fl. winter of only one week, but the reviews say this sweater pills very easily. Do you find this to be an issue?

    1. Hi Mary, I’ve only worn it once, but I did wear it all day, and when I took it off, I did notice it looked like it was starting to pill. It’s such a great basic, and the price is right, so I’m going to try to order one of those pilling removers – https://amzn.to/2ighDZK – and hope that keeps it looking nice for a while. I have other sweaters that are pilling so I think this gizmo will come in handy. It’s only $12 and it’s Prime. 🙂

        1. This is true. I have a Vince sweater that came from Trunk Club – it is AMAZING, never stretches or loses its shape, never pills, doesn’t wrinkle. But it was $$$. I splurged b/c I had credits to spend, but it has definitely made me realize the difference in quality, and I’m starting to consider the wisdom of having 5 super nice sweaters as opposed to 15 crappy, pilling sweaters, lol.

  5. So cute!! I ended up ordering the scarf yesterday after your response to me, so thank you! :). Can’t wait to get it, and it’s such an easy outfit to replicate. These shoes look similar to Tieks? How’s the arch support in these shoes? I love the gray color.

  6. Love the formula but how crazy is it that what stuck out to me was the Nordstrom 10X points??? I don’t think I knew they ever had that. The best I’ve seen is 3X. Do you have to be a certain “level” for that offer…maybe I’ll reach it sometime????

    1. Ha! I don’t think so – it was on the night of the holiday shopping party – actually, I do think you have to be Level 2 for that invite. There are 4 levels in all, I think.

  7. You look fabulous darlin! Is that southern enough for you. Ha! The red lip gloss looks awesome, and I love the scarf. When you wear the more fitted and shorter sweaters, do they stay in place? I am thicker in my hip area and have trouble with shorter cut tops staying below the waistline of my jeans, which aggravates the stew out of me. I hate to keep tugging on my clothes. And none of the tanks makes my mid section smooth enough to suit me, so I don’t like for my tops to fit snug enough to show my ridges.

    Have a blessed hump day!

    1. Hm, I guess I habitually pull my sweaters down when I stand up or after bending over, but I don’t think about it too much. It doesn’t bother me. I know what you mean about them being snug enough to show ridges. There’s a fine line to get just the right fit.

  8. I came back to add another comment, but the strange thing is I don’t see my original comment? Interesting?
I first said that I think this is a go-to for you Jo-Lynne because it works so well and looks so good on you!!
Then I came back to add that this theme is great for stay at home moms, but I think it can be perfect for retired women too! So if you need another contributor in the future—count me in!! 🙂

  9. I confess, I do look for you post every morning, but I don’t mind that sometimes it arrives a little later in the day! Loving your pale blue nail polish. In the fall, I wore a gray color for weeks– the first time I ever wore a color that wasn’t red or pink or nude! I might just try a light blue next time I have my polish changed. I like the color with your jeans and my daily “uniform” definitely includes jeans.

  10. I don’t mind when you sent out your email “late.” Doesn’t matter when I read it as it is always enjoyable. Thanks for putting so much effort into your photo shoots and emails. I really like those jeans! Would mind telling me where the top of them hits you? It says on the website that they are mid-rise jeans. Thanks!

  11. Cute look, and I LOVE the red lip on you!!
Doesn’t really matter to me when you send your email out as I normally don’t see it til after work anyway. I always look forward to reading it. Thanks for all you do!

  12. Excellent depiction of a comfy outfit. I really like how you lightened it up with the bag and shoes.
    Gorgeous!

  13. Hi Jo-Lynne,
I’m zipping back to this January 11 post. I love the lighter color denim. I noticed when I click the link, it goes to a color called crown. The sizing is a little different on this color, I think. Usually I get a 29 (size 8)in th DL1961, but on this color it says a 29 is a 6. I am wondering if you have this color on in the pic and if so, what size. Sorry to be nosey, but I seem to wear the same size and before I spend $ thought I’d ask. Thanks so much.

    1. Hey Jackie, in my experience, all the DL sizes are pretty consistent with each other – so if the 29 has fit you before, I’d stick with that. The 29 in DL1961 Emma and Florence always fits me perfectly.
