Casual Summer Shorts Outfit

Today I’m sharing a casual summer shorts outfit that is something I’d typically wear working from home, but it’s also nice enough to wear if I need to run out to the store or to a doctor appointment or if I want to take the kids to lunch.

Everything I’m wearing in this outfit is a piece you’ve seen before if you follow my blog regularly, but I haven’t put them together before.

If you are a stay at home mom or work from home as I do, you probably know how easy it is to fall into a rut of resorting to old, schlumpy clothes or staying into your pajamas until noon. I won’t lie… there are days that I do just that, but I try not to let it become a habit. While I don’t need to dress to the nines every day, I like to look polished and put together so I’m ready for whatever might come up. Plus I swear I’m more productive when I get dressed and put on make-up and make the extra effort to throw on a few accessories.

This is the Dolman Jetsetter Tee from White House Black Market that I styled with cuffed skinny jeans and caged wedge sandals earlier in the season. This time I threw it on with my white denim jean shorts. I like how it’s essentially a black tee, but it’s got a little more pizzazz.

When I wear black and white, I like to incorporate a color into my accessories — whether it be with my jewelry or shoes or handbag. In this case, I wore green beaded bracelets from the Alex and Ani Deep Sea Collection.

I’m loving their beaded bracelets this season. They sent me two sets — this green set and then a set of white ones, along with the sand dollar charm bangle. I’ve been alternating between the two almost constantly!

The mermaid ring I’m wearing is also from them, but my 13-year-old daughter is OBSESSED with mermaids, so she has already claimed that.

My AG jean shorts are from last season, but I’ve been linking to these Paige as a similar option. They’re on sale for $99. These by 7 for All Mankind are cute too. For a less expensive option, I like these Gap ones a lot. These actually look most like mine because they have the distressing. If you prefer a longer inseam, these Kut from the Kloth are more modest without being frumpy.

I would typically wear my nude Tory Burch Miller Flip Flops with this, but I decided to break out my leopard slides for the fun of it. These make the outfit a little bit dressier.

My bucket bag has been discontinued, but this one is similar, and this one is also cute and only $25!

I am actually selling my bucket bag on @shopjolynnescloset, if you’re interested. (To shop my Instagram, you just leave your Paypal email address in the comments of the item you want to purchase. I will email an invoice and ship the product within 48 hours of receiving payment.)

After we photographed these pictures, I realized that my bright green satchel would also be fun with this outfit, so I snapped a mirror selfie for Instagram carrying that bag instead. I really like the pop of color with this outfit. (And I cleaned my mirror as soon as I saw this picture! Yikes!!!)

I kept the rest of my jewelry simple — the 3-disc necklace fills the V-neckline nicely, and the Bungalow Hoops are a little more fun than plain hoops.

This is a great example of how easy it is to dress up a casual black and white summer outfit with a great pair of sandals and a few pretty accessories. I also hope it helps to see me repurposing some of the items in my closet. This black top and these white shorts have been in heavy rotation this summer because they’re both so versatile.

My lipstick, by the way, is Gin Fizz. It is very bright so I toned it down with lipgoss.

  1. My only work is blogging and caring for my two little ones so I am always “from home”! And I definitely feel better and get more accomplished when I put myself together. Sometimes it is just shorts and a tee, but I like to pull it together with pretty accessories and fabulous shoes! Your outfit is super classic with the black and white combination and then your wonderful leopard slides! I also am loving the Alex and Ani beaded bracelets. Lovely!

    Have a great weekend.

  2. I work from home and totally get it! Sometimes I stay in cotton shorts and a t all day…. but I try not to do it more than a day or two a week. A girl has to get out.
Love your shop the closet– what a great idea!!! I’d totally snag that bag if I needed a new purse right now. 🙂

  3. Thank you for your words this morning following the horrendous news. You put into words what I felt in my heart and gave it a voice – thank you!

  4. Thanks for sharing your thoughts/feelings on Dallas. I’m reeling from the shock.

Cute outfit, and I agree that it is too easy to become sloppy when staying home. I do try to make some effort 🙂

  5. Just curious … Do you know how many articles of clothing you have in your closet? I am currently preparing for a cross country move. The new house has a smaller closet so I’ve decided to convert to the slim velvet covered hangers. When I counted to determine how many I’d need, I was surprised what the total added up to – over 300. It made me wonder, do other women have this many clothes or do I need to find the local shopaholics anonymous? LOL

      1. Well it is an occupational hazard. I am a Style Expert at Chico’s. I stumbled on your blog a few months ago and I really enjoy it. You have great style!

  6. I saw this top on your previous post and had a gift card for WHBM so decided to get it. It just came and I love it.
Thanks for all the great tips especially the ones for the sale items!

  7. Such a tragedy of the 2 innocent men that were shot by police officers as well which is what ignited this whole thing.
Tragedy that police officers lost lives in the line of duty.
None of this should have happened.
Prayers for everybody involved and for the poor little 4 year old that witnessed the shooting. So sad all around.

On another note, I love when you style shorts. This is a great look 🙂

    1. Absolutely, all 3 events are tragic. I wish we could all come together and grieve together and try to understand each other rather than picking each other apart. (Thinking of the conversations I see in Facebook and elsewhere online.) It’s been weighing heavy on my heart all week.

Thanks for the comment on the shorts. I am pretty much living in them right now, it has been so stinkin’ hot and humid this week.
