Casual Camel Coat Outfit

Well, it’s here! 25 Days of Winter Fashion starts NOW and today I have a casual camel coat outfit.

I’ve been trying to update my winter coats over the past couple of years. I used to wear one main coat all winter long — a long, gunmetal grey puffy coat with a fur hood. I wore it for casual and for dress-up and everything in between. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that, in fact, it’s probably admirable, but a coat can be a fun accessory, and it’s nice to have some variety for different occasions.

A long wool coat in a great neutral like black, camel, or grey, is a classic that you can wear for many years. I had a black one many moons ago, so this time I decided to go for something different. I chose camel.

Nordstrom is a great place to shop for coats because they have a huge variety. I actually purchased this wool blend Reefer Coat during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale last summer. I love the classic lines and simple silhouette. It also comes in grey and black.

It says that it is narrow in the shoulders and to size up if you’re in between sizes, but I ordered my usual size 8, and I felt like it was huge. I ended up going back for the 6 a few weeks ago, and it has plenty of room, so I am going to tell you it is true to size or runs even a tad large. It also comes in Petite sizes. As always, shipping is free both ways at Nordstrom, so if you want to order this coat and you’re unsure of the size, you can order both and return the one that doesn’t fit.

The nice thing about this style of coat is that you can dress it up or down. It is perfectly appropriate over dresses for church, and it looks equally chic over jeans and a sweater, as I’m wearing it here.

These boots are from last year, but again, I’ll link to a few options below. I like having tall black leather boots when the weather gets dicey in the wintertime because you can wear them even if it’s slushy and mucky out, unlike suede, which is kind of fussy. Black Hunter rain boots would also be gorgeous with this outfit and are practical for winter weather. I wear mine all year round. If you’re worried about your feet being cold in the rain boots, wear thick wool socks inside.

I like how the plaid scarf finishes off the outfit and coordinates with the sweater I’m wearing. It also makes a pretty pop of color on top of the neutral coat.

I’m wearing a simple ribbed mock neck pullover from Nordstrom. For size reference, I’m wearing a small. I often wear a medium in sweaters, but this one seems to run a bit big, and I’m not a fan of sizing up for a more oversized look. That’s kind of trendy right now, and it works if you’re young and super skinny, but for those of us with curves, it’s more flattering to buy clothes that fit. 🙂

I like the trendy split step hem and interesting stitching details on the sides. If you like long tunic sweaters, this one has a nice slim silhouette, and it creates a nice palette for scarves and necklaces.

For an affordable pair of skinny jeans, you can’t go wrong with these Wit & Wisdom Ab-Solution Skinnies designed with Ab-solution power-mesh panels to slim and hold, including a waistband with interior control and booty-lift construction. They are super comfortable, and they look great on.

I also carried a black leather shoulder bag with gold hardware to coordinate with the boots. I love how chic and effortless a casual camel coat outfit is. I will definitely be wearing many variations of it this winter!

  1. How do you feel about the neckline on that sweater? Looks like it might feel constricting.

Just found out we’re going to Ireland next summer, so I’ve got to dig thru your old posts to find your trench coat links.

  2. Such a great, classy look. I love how the coat brings the casual sweater outfit up a notch. I love that sweater too. I have it in two colors and can’t wait to be able to wear them! And I never made it to checkout with that scarf before it sold out..Bummer because those colors are so gorgeous.

    1. I’m so bummed it’s sold out b/c I want to keep styling it and I know it’s annoying when I link to things that are sold out. I really love the red Sole Society scarf I linked to as a substitution, but that one has sold out a few times and I’m not sure how long it will last. I ordered one and it hasn’t come in yet.

  3. I love all things fall and love to wear scarves and boots! Would love to see some more scarves and how to wear them every day.

  4. Love the color combination! Could you recommend some 100% wool sweaters this winter? I’m finding so many sweaters are acrylic and they just aren’t holding up well. Thanks for all the gorgeous inspiration!

    1. I do think wool always holds up better than acrylic. Cashmere is my favorite but even with cashmere, I notice a different in quality from one sweater to the next. A sweater like the one in today’s post will probably only last for a season or two. It’s trendy, and for the price, I’m happy if I get a couple of seasons out of it. I don’t expect it to be a classic wardrobe staple for many years like a more expensive cashmere or wool sweater. I hope that helps!

    1. I’ve been thinking of doing a post on how I curl my hair. I’d need to do a video, though, and they are such a production. Haha, no pun intended! My husband does pro video work so we really should buckle down and do it. Maybe after the holidays when things slow down. 🙂

  5. So excited that the 25 Days of Winter have started!! Of course, the whole outfit is a winner. I haven’t had a classic camel coat in years. Now that I’m seeing how you’ve styled it with jeans & boots, it’s got me to thinking maybe it need one! It really is a classic timeless piece. And now that I know you’re only an inch taller than my 5’4″ , it give me a perspective on what that length will look like on me. (To me you always look very tall)! Re your floors, I bet you feel like you’ve got a new home and the all the excitement of decorating that goes with it. I just saw some beautiful area rugs from the Magnolia line, (HGTV Fixer Upper, Joanna Gains). Couldn’t believe how soft they were and the patterns were striking!

  6. Is it true that not using a scarf can be more slimming? I am large chested and when I wear scarves I feel even larger and self conscious.. Maybe scarves aren’t for everyone? Maybe thinner scarves wouldn’t add bulk. I do love a pretty scarf and the one you are styling compliments so well!

    1. Hey Abbe, scarves definitely add visual weight, and particularly when you’re large chested, they can make you look heavier than you are. I do wear them, but they always feel fussy to me. I finally learned from that Adore Your Wardrobe class that why I feel that way is b/c of my body type, and they really aren’t as flattering as a necklace. I prefer to wear scarves as a warm layer for cold weather that I take off indoors, as opposed to an accessory to an outfit that I wear all day. This scarf is very thick and is really not something I would keep on inside. That’s why I also put a necklace on with this sweater, so when I take the scarf off, I have an accessory. I probably should have photographed it like that too.

      1. Thanks! I just need to remember scarves are a warm layer to remove once inside…thanks for your reply! There are so many pretty scarves out these days! Have a terrific Tuesday!

  7. I love this coat. Such a classic look and long enough to wear with tunic sweaters! I enjoy all the looks that the two of you share with us and learn something new all the time. Thank you for all the effort that you put into the series.

  8. Love this outfit! I inherited a camel coat from my grandmother and I love how I can dress it up or down. Although I am in the deep south and we don’t have enough to cold weather to get to wear it often. Entering the giveaway and look forward to the winter wardrobe series!

  9. I’ve struggled with finding the right color “camel” that doesn’t look sickly with my skin tone. This looks great on you!

  10. Your outfit almost makes me look forward to the cold!

LOVE your coat..! I have always got with black but am definitely seeing camel as a palette with so many options…will be on the lookout to add one to the closet.

The hardware on your boots and bag really elevate your outfit to a whole other level.

If I looked as good as you do, I’d surely say, “Okay winter, bring it on!”

  11. I love this sweater on you! When I clicked over to Nordstrom, I realized it isn’t something I would have normally chosen. But with your pics and description, I’m going with the black one! Thanks! 🙂

  12. Love the combination of colors! Would you share what size sweater you’re wearing?
You look beautiful in this winter outfit!

  13. Love how this whole outfit looks together – especially like that scarf! You mentioned this briefly in a recent post, but I’d like to see your take on different lengths/styles of necklaces and how they change the look and proporotions of an outfit.

  14. Great outfit! I have that sweater in the same color and also the hunter green, It does run a little large but stuck with my usual medium for a slightly oversized look and I love it with leggings! That coat is great and I have been looking for a basic coat to add to my wardrobe! Love your blog!

    1. I can see how it would look better with leggings if it was a bit oversized. I think I am in between sizes now that I lost a few pounds, so it makes recommending sizing more difficult. I used to be a pretty solid medium, but now I can definitely go either way, depending on the style.

  15. Love this coat, a bit pricey for me and the widget you have on the bottom of your post has the wrong price on it…it states $147.40 which I thought was within my price range but when I clicked on the coat it states $220? Just thought I’d let you know!

    1. That’s annoying! I think it’s because it was on sale when I originally saved it to the widget. I may be able to fix that so it doesn’t look like bait and switch! 🙂 Hopefully it will go on sale again.

  16. My challenge is staying on trend with shoes. I wear a size 4 and none of the shoes in that size (when I can find them) are particularly affordable.

  17. I am so excited for this round of 25! I would love to see some holiday dress ideas. I fell in love with and bought a red lace sleeveless sheath dress. It is cold here and I don’t normally go sleeveless. Is there anything that you could suggest for warmth when styling this type of dress?

I love the camel coat. The entire outfit is just beautiful and your hair looks amazing! I especially love your necklace under the scarf. I would not have thought to put the two together and it looks great!

      1. Thank you, I really love the look of this capelet. It I would look beautiful with my dress in addition to providing warmth and coverage. I am going to see what colors and styles of faux fur wraps are out there now. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

  18. Love, love, love that camel coat! I really appreciate your style. I always have discussions with my daughter and friends about how it doesn’t really take that much more effort to put a cute sweater or t-shirt with jeans than a sloppy, oversized t-shirt with jeans or leggings. And, the results are miles apart! Also, you inspire me to walk into my closet and see the new ways I can put together the stuff I already own!

    1. Preach it, Ana! This is my mantra, and sometimes I even preach it to myself when I’m tempted to pull on yoga pants and a sweatshirt. I tell myself it is no more work to pull on jeans and a sweater, and I always feel so much better when I’m dressed nicely. Glad I’m inspiring you to shop your closet. 🙂

  19. Another fantastic outfit Jo-Lynne! I wish the cold weather here in south central GA stayed cold long enough to wear coats and heavier tops, etc. It was 32 earlier this morning and is quickly going up in the 70’s, so layers are in order.

Would live to see a pic of the floors once they’re done!

  20. Wonderful post, can’t wait to see the upcoming posts in your series! Stay warm up there in PA, it’s not too bad down here in Atlanta:)

  21. I love the idea of dressing down a camel coat…mine rarely comes out of the closet because I think of it as being dressy. Thanks for the great idea!

  22. This may be a challenge for you, but how about styling a look for winter in warmer climates (I live in Texas, and it is going to be 80 degrees today.). Also, how can you call yourself fuller figured??

    1. 80 sounds lovely, but I do think I would miss sweaters and coats. Hopefully some of my fall outfits will help give you Southern ladies some “winter” style inspiration?? https://jolynneshane.com/category/fashion-and-shopping/fall-fashion-2

And when I said fuller figured, I was referring to shape, not size. 🙂 I’m never sure how to refer to my body type. If I say curvy, that also has a weight connotation, but maybe it’s more accurate.

        1. They’re in the shopping widget with the pictures, but you may have to click the arrow to scroll to the right or left to get to them. I put a lot of links in there this time! 🙂 I will add them to the text links too.

  23. I love everything about this outfit. I am loving the wine/burgundy color trend – just got a pair of pants in that color but have not worn them yet.

  24. Love the boots! Are they comfortable? On my wish list. Also I appreciate the tips about the sweater size… may try and see if I can try it on this week in store. Great price.

  25. I definitely need layering help to stay warm. Either it’s warm outside and everyone has the AC blasting or it cools off a little and they blast the heat! I just can’t win!

  26. I’m relatively new to your blog but I’m really enjoying how you put your outfits together. Some don’t apply to us in California (we have to do a rain dance to get any wetness from the sky!), but that’s ok. I appreciate the links to the different pieces as well. Looking forward to your 25 days of winter!

  27. Thinking of pulling up old carpet and doing wood floors in great room and dining room too! Let’s see the finished product , if you don’t mind sharing!

  28. I love this coat and the shade of camel. It doesn’t look as yellow as some. My coloring doesn’t handle yellow tones of anything. So excited for these next 25 days from my favorite two bloggers!

  29. New blog reader here! I’m definitely going to check out those Wit & Wisdom jeans…they sound like the perfect skinnies!

  30. I’m surprised how good the camel looks -I would have skipped over it for black with my darker hair but after seeing it on you would give it a chance. Looking forward to the next 24 days!

    1. You know what? I actually ordered the black originally, back in July, and it sat in my closet for months. Then after re-watching Gilmore Girls this fall, and seeing how amazing Loreli looks in her classic camel reefer coat, I exchanged it for the camel. LOL!!! So yeah, I naturally gravitate to black as well, but I am loving camel right now — not just in coats, in sweaters too. 🙂

  31. Such a pretty outfit, JoLynne! I’m looking forward to the rest of this series. I look forward to each and every outfit you and Cyndi style. 🙂

  32. Hi Jo-Lynne! Great outfit today. The camel colored wool coat is timeless and so versatile, like you’ve shown. My question for you is: Can a short gal wear over the knee boats without looking stumpy? And, what are some good choices for otk boots for vertically challenged gals like myself?
    Thanks a bunch!

    1. That one’s a hard one for me to answer since I am pretty average, and I think I take for granted that I can wear almost any height of boot. I will say that some OTK boots are higher than others. The ones like I’m wearing in this post barely come up over the knee, same with the ones Cyndi is wearing today. So I’d suggest sticking with those styles. When shopping online, most sites will list the height of the boot shaft, so you can compare that way and try to stick with ones that are lower. 20″ seems to be about the lowest that is still considered OTK. Some are 22″ and even 24″ tall. This pair that I linked to today is the shortest at 19 1/2″ – https://bit.ly/2eXkdBS.

As far as not looking stumpy, the best advice I have is to pair your boots with similar colored pants. Dresses don’t matter so much because you are pretty much breaking up your body into 2 equal portions without much in between. But with jeans and a sweater, you should try to keep the jeans and boots in the same tone (or close) to create a long, lean leg line. And then the sweater can contrast, or it can also be in the same tone if you want an all-over monochromatic look, which can make you appear taller.

      I hope that helps!

  33. I was going to ask about scarf styling, but I saw you answered above. That’s exactly my issue with wearing a scarf, it’s not for larger chested gals. I would love to see some Party wear for the holiday season. Love, love your blog. I always get so many awesome ideas from you!

  34. The scarf is beautiful and hope you continue to feature scarves. I’m somewhat flat-chested and actually run a size smaller on the top then the bottom. Scarves really help to balance me out so I wear them as often as I can.

One of your other readers mentioned a preference for wool over acrylic. I agree that wool hold up better and lasts longer, but as a post-menopausal women, I appreciate that acrylic is a little cooler. I also like the price point on the sweater. I like to look good, but we lead a very casual lifestyle and it s hard to justify spending a lot of money on my clothes.

One question: the sweater does look much more red on the website. Does is coordinate with the plaid infinity scarf that you featured a few weeks ago? I’m referring to the one that has camel, red and green tones. (Love that scarf!)

    1. Yes, then scarves will definitely work well for you! So much depends on body type. Because I’m pretty evenly proportioned, I can get away with a lot of styles, so I do try to style a variety. I’ll definitely continue to feature scarves. 🙂 I also try to feature a wide variety of price points because I know not everyone has the same budget or prioritizes the same things.

I think this sweater would look great with that scarf. And yes, too funny that Cyndi styled it today!

  35. I love a simple classic coat. I have one in black that I wear all the time whether dressed up or down. I think it’s time to switch to a camel one. Going back to check out the other links. That purse has my attention, too.
Can you do a post with short booties that have a low heel and are comfortable to wear for hours? Like you, I have some foot issues and need to baby my feet.

    1. Yeah, most of my boots are pretty high, aren’t they? These are lower but they are $$$$ – still, if you are babying your feet, they might be worth the investment. https://jolynneshane.com/striped-poncho-with-low-heel-booties.html

Also, I did quite a few last year because my feet were more sensitive then. I highly recommend checking out The Walking Company. I wore a lot of their boots when I was babying my feet. This pair is similar to the pair I featured in the link above, but not as $$$ – https://bit.ly/2fWjbbY I had a lot of luck with the Umberto Raffini Nilea brand.

  36. Love this look on you. I am considering the sweater as I really like the look on you. Can’t wait to see more fun winter fashion. Thanks!

  37. I love the camel coat ! Beautiful ! I would love a post on appropriate outfits for banquets, dinners and get togetherness when you want to look great but comfortable and more casual.

  38. Thank you for the giveaway! I love your blog and how you put outfits together :). I love the colors you’ve been using lately too!

  39. This is beautiful! I love camel coats and have been looking at this one. So nice to see it styled and so adorbs with plaid scarf.

  40. Thank you for your seasonal series. I love this look! The sweater is much more flattering on you than the website! 😉

  41. I enjoy your blog because your style and body shape are very similar to mine. You even live in my area so I don’t have to worry about climate differences. Please style snow boots!

  42. I LOVE the camel coat! I wish I had a reason to buy it; in Texas we don’t get enough cold weather to justify it. With my “power surges” and a jacket I’m usually warm enough.

    1. Hi Deb, it could definitely work, but you might prefer a shorter coat and sweater so you don’t feel swallowed up in them. Or a similar coat in a Petite size would probably work.

  43. I’m sticking with dark coats while I have a toddler since I don’t want to be dry cleaning them often 🙂 I know you did a post on brown boots with black pants, and I do that pretty often, but what’s the verdict on brown with grey pants? I like my grey and brown boots better than my black ones, but I feel like I have to wear black boots with grey pants. So far I’ve just been sticking with my black booties, but it’s getting cold!

  44. Hi JoLynne! I just got done with the adore your wardrobe class and just got my winter coat–big and bulky since we live in Michigan! Love, love, love that camel color, I am petite so I’m thinking the shorter length would be good for me!

  45. I have a camel hair coat similar to yours that has been in my closet since college. It is a classic basic that never goes out of style. I love it paired with the scarf. My office is moving downtown and I definitely have to step up my scarf, glove and hat game since I won’t be just running from my car into the office anymore!

  46. Love this look! I sometimes wish I had dark hair so I could wear more of the fushia/pink/purple colors. I wear them anyway because with curly red hair not a lot looks good but expect maybe green. I love your blog! You’ve been a great fashion consultant! ????

  47. Thanks to you and Cyndi for all the effort that is put in your blogs. I have fewer clothes in my closet but more outfit choices.

  48. Love your walking in the woods outfit! I love the fushia, plum, and black together. The camel coat is great – too bad it sold out in camel.
