4 Ways to Wear Spruce Green Jeans This Fall

4 Ways to Wear Spruce Green Jeans This Fall

One of the biggest color trends for fall 2017 is spruce green. I’m seeing it everywhere in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale — bags, shoes, jeans, sweaters, dresses… You name it and it’s available in spruce green.

You can call it spruce or pine green or evergreen or military green or whatever you like. The actual Pantone color in the 2017 Fashion Color Report is Shaded Spruce, so I’m going with spruce.

I ordered all three spruce green denim options from the #NSale so I could compare and style a few outfits to show you how versatile they are. I ordered the DL1961 Margaux, KUT from the Kloth Donna, and Joe’s Iconic Ankle Skinnies. I decided to keep the Joe’s. The fit on the KUT pair was similar, but that brand tends to stretch out and I’ve had good luck with Joe’s over the years. I didn’t care for the fit of the DL pair — the leg opening is a little wide and cuts off my leg at an awkward place. I compared the dimensions and it’s only a 1/2″ wider than the other two, but it makes all the difference.

Now if I was smart, I’d make this into a series and do a separate post for each outfit, but I’m going to put all four looks in one post because so much of what I’m wearing is selling out. Fortunately the Joe’s jeans I kept are fully stocked, so yay for small miracles! (Size down if in between; otherwise they’re TTS.)

4 Ways to Wear Spruce Green Jeans This Fall

LOOK #1: This is a simple transitional look that can take you from late summer into early fall. I paired the spruce green jeans with a grey t-shirt and taupe ankle boots, and I carried my Neverfull. I like the combination of the browns in my tote with the neutral green and grey tones in the rest of the outfit. It keeps the look casual and doesn’t look like I’m trying too hard to mach. This is the type of outfit I like to wear on a daily basis.

As an aside, I’m so bummed these booties sold out. They are soooo comfortable, I can wear them all day. I linked a few similar pairs for you.

LOOK #2: This time I put together a fall/winter look with a black tunic sweater and black peep toe ankle boots. I don’t usually wear tunics, but I really like the fit of this one and the ribbed side panel detail. Also, the cowl neck has a nice drape to it. At the moment it is sold out, but they may get some returns. I also like this Gibson fleece tunic, and the blush/heather grey color would work well with spruce green.

I chose black booties to bookend the outfit and also to keep the overall color scheme in the darker tones. The peep toe and slingback features keep them from looking too heavy and work well with the 3/4 sleeve sweater. I tried ballet flats, but because the tunic is long I need the extra height of the heels to balance out the proportions of the outfit.

LOOK #3: For this look, I topped the spruce green jeans with a white cami and blush cardigan, and I swapped out the black ankle boots for a lighter perforated blush pair. Again, this cardigan is cashmere and has 3/4 length sleeves so it’s more suitable for fall and mild winter weather, but I suppose that all depends on where you live. It’s a great lightweight sweater for those of you in warmer climates.

Blush and spruce are a great combination, and I like how this combination lightens up the dark green jeans. Incidentally, I also like this sweater and shoe combo with my merlot skinny jeans from the #NSale.

LOOK #4: For this last look, I swapped out the cardigan for a cognac moto jacket, and I decided to wear leopard flats. I think I’d like this look better with an ankle boot, but I like how the leopard coordinates with the cognac, and I wanted something different from the other outfits in this post. A riding boot or even an OTK boot could work too.

I hope you found this helpful! I wouldn’t have thought this color would be so versatile, but spruce works really well with a lot of neutrals as well as muted pink and coral tones. If spruce jeans aren’t your thing, consider a handbag or ankle boots. They can work as a neutral with so many colors.

  1. i really do love those jeans — and you look great in the black tunic – that is a very chic outfit with a slight edge, love it.

  2. Yes!! Thank you!! This is just the kind of post I need and LOVE — inspiration on how to wear a certain item! Love all the looks!!

  3. Love look #2! Beautiful! I don’t usually like tunics either, but I would consider that one. Maybe Athleta has something similar?????

Love this post! Have a wonderful day.????

      1. Love it! Thank you. I was at the mall today and walked right by Athleta. Maybe I will go back or just order online.????

  4. Awesome post! Never in my life would I have thought to pair so many different colors with spruce colored jeans. I saved a couple of the pics for future inspiration. For those of us that can’t afford to have multiple colors of jeans in our closet, what versatile color would you suggest?

We are heading to Atlanta in about one hour, so I need to get moving. Have a blessed day!

    1. Hey Ginger, have a safe trip. I think the color depends largely on what you have in your closet to go with them and which one you’re drawn to the most. Dark green or wine or plum are equally on trend and have a lot of styling options.

      1. Thanks for this–I have olive green jeans, and I’m always struggling on what to pair them with. I end up with black or white only and that gets boring! I have avoided brown so as not to look too “tree-like/wood-nymph-esque” haha but the blush and grey are great other neutrals! Thank you!! I think I’ll try darker wine too. Thank you!

  5. the spruce green is beautiful but when I look on Nordstrom’s website the color is Olive and Military Green. I can’t find the spruce.

    1. Every brand calls them something different… olive, military, army, spruce, pine, evergreen… it’s all in the same general color family. 🙂 Usually I think of olive and army green as lighter than this but this fall it seems most styles are leaning towards a darker tone.

      1. I think Pantone’s Shaded Spruce has more of a blue undertone than these more mossy/olive tones, but I really like these better. Colored but still neutral at the same time. I’ll definitely be wearing this version in the fall!

  6. Thank you for this post!!! I just bought a pair of cargo pants in this color. So many ideas!! Just in the knick of time as I maybe wearing them tomorrow as here in Minnesota it’s only supposed to be the 50’s. I guess an early taste of fall! Thanks again as the timing couldn’t be more perfect!!!

  7. Thanks so much for this post. Seeing multiple ways to wear the same colored jean is so helpful! Could you possibly do the same with a pair of wine-colored jeans? I’m debating which color is smartest for me to invest in. I’ve always been a blue jeans girl, getting wild and crazy with a black pair once in a while, but I really want to try a colored pair.

Would you say this is ankle bone length? I’m struggling with how long my skinnies should be to get the most optimum wear with different shoes/booties.

    1. Yes, I have those merlot 7 For All Mankind jeans and I’d have fun styling them different ways. The length will depend on your height of course, but I’m 5’5″ for reference. I think technically they should be a TOUCH shorter than they are on me but I like this length best with ballet flats and pumps and sandals. I think any shorter, and it would make my legs look stumpy. Sometimes they’re a touch long for ankle boots, that is why I tend to go for the ankle boots with a lower shaft, like the taupe ones in this post. You’ll notice I had to cuff my jeans with the black booties. That’s not a big deal, and sometimes I like a cuff, but I don’t particularly care for it with the raw hem.

  8. All great looks, 2 and 3 are my favorite. I like the additional styling tips on why you chose certain shoes based on your top or other outfit pieces. Those kind of tips I find super helpful since I am still learning how to style my clothes better 🙂

I have the Clover DL1961 jeans from the sale although I think I need them hemmed a bit. I’m still searching for a wine pair that fits right. Hoping Loft comes through for me when fall stuff comes out!

      1. I did and sent them back. If they had a petite version, I would have loved them. The back pockets were huge and not very flattering. I absolutely loved the color though!!

  9. Outfit number four is my favorite. I don’t gravitate towards colored denim, but the cognac jacket and leopard flats make it seem so easy. Thanks for all your fun fashion advice. I love this blog!

  10. What size did you take in the Joes Jeans? I already have the DL jeans but now I want to compare the Joes Jeans after reading this post!

  11. I recently bought a green denim Liverpool jacket from Stitchfix. I always struggle with deciding whether you can wear two different colored denims together. I love the jacket and it fits better than any other denim jacket I have had, but I don’t know what to wear with it.

    1. Hey Julie. I’d definitely wear it with blue jeans or black jeans or white jeans. Also tan or beige khakis in a light beige (just make sure there’s some contrast between the green and beige) or pants in any of those colors. It could also be cute with coral or pink jeans/pants.

  12. Thanks for all the ideas!!!! I think I need to get a pair…I was holding out because I didn’t know what I would wear with them but now I do! Also…I bought a pair of red jegging type pants so if you decide to do a post with something similar that’d be great. haha. 🙂

  13. Love this post! I always enjoy the way you show multiple ways to style the same piece of clothing. Often, one of your ideas sparks an “Oh yes” moment for me and inspires me to pair something I hadn’t thought of.

  14. Jo Lynne I have a question. Do you keep all of the clothes you buy for your blog? It’s so many I wouldn’t have the storage available. Or do you return them after pictures and keep the ones you like. I wouldn’t know what to do with so many clothes!

    1. Oh my goodness, no!!! LOL! I return a lot of things (as long as they weren’t worn, of course.) Other things I may wear a few times and then donate or give to friends and family. My closet is constantly turning over.

  15. Awesome post Jo-Lynne! I Love any green color. LOL! – I have a blazer in this color and now I can see all the other different colors that would look good with it! I love posts like this – It’s like dressing for the week – I am sure no-one would notice that I wore the same pair of pants! 🙂

  16. All are awesome looks, but #2 was my favorite!!! I’m s tunic kind of girl, and those black booties are AWESOME!!! Just ordered them, and will order the sweater when in becomes available in black again!!!! Thanks for the inspiration!!!!

  17. Really enjoy the options you provide – I can always use a helping hand.

Would you consider doing a “5” jewelry pieces that go together (or jewelry mishaps to avoid?).

Thanks again – I look forward to your daily emails.

  18. I would never have thought to pair gray with the green. I really liked that! Plus that outfit is something I can re-create from stuff I already have in my closet. It’ll be a great fall, Phoenix outfit long about October. LOL.

  19. I always enjoy your posts, but lately they’ve been extra helpful and inspiring!! Thank you for all the work you put into them.

  20. Great post! I have a pair of white Joe’s that fit perfect- glad I kept hunting for the right ones to come along. Maybe I’ll order a pair in the green/spruce. Thanks for the different combos that can be worn with this color. I especially love the black open toe booties. Many other bloggers wore the lighter colors but just love the black one!! Are they comfortable?
    Another ???? To your blog

    1. They are incredibly comfortable! I love Vince Camuto boots. I have an obscene amount of his shoes and they’re all fantastic. I do think they run a bit large, though, as an FYI. I can usually size down at least a half size.

  21. Pinned Look #2. Love these jeans. Questions about the frayed hems–how do they do when laundered? And how often do you launder premium denim? I assume they will get fuzzy/faded around the raw edge and wonder if that would change the look of an outfit like #2 after a few wearings? And do you think the frayed hems will stay in style for long or do you see it as a trend? Thanks!

    1. The frayed hems do get more frayed, but I just trim them when the strings get too long. I do think it’s a trend that will pass, but I have no idea how long it will be around. As with everything, it seems like we just get used to a new style and how to wear it, and then the trends change. Ha! I suppose you could always hem them down the road, but that might make them too short. You can always tuck into tall boots if you get tired of the frayed edge.

  22. Love this post! I needed to get a new pair of jeans in that color, so this post is perfectly timed! I’d love to be able to wear skinny jeans, but it wouldn’t be a pretty sight! I checked out the selection of colors in the store that carries the fit I need, and that is the exact color they are carrying. I already have a cognac motor jacket and a cardigan similar to the blush one, so I’m all set, thanks to you! I’m such a copycat! ???? But you make getting dressed so easy. If I’m going out for the day & need a little inspiration, off I go to my Pinterest Board of JoLynne Style! Thank you for all the hard work you put into your blog, it’s much appreciated!

  23. Love this post! I have Olive skinnies from last year. Can’t wait to style them using your ideas! I agree with Gina, I always check your blog, Pinterest and your Instagram before I plan an outfit, You’re the best!!

  24. I got the olive and Merlot jeans from the anniversary sale. Both fit great. I can only afford to keep one. Which color do you think is more versatile? I’m leaning towards keeping the Merlot bc it’s x bit more dressy maybe? I have tons of blue shades, black, and white already.

  25. Seeing this post in my inbox has me excited to shop for fall. I love olive jeans but I think these darker spruce would be perfect for fall/winter.

  26. I love these kinds of blog posts! I have a question about the tunic outfit (which was my favorite look, btw) and it is certainly not a criticism as I enjoy reading your analysis of your outfits. I would have chosen to wear a long necklace with a pendant with the tunic. Why did you choose not to wear any necklace at all? Was it so that the cowl neckline would be the focus? Also, I have a merlot colored jacket. Would the color look okay with the green jeans or would the overall look be too dark? Thanks so much for your wonderful posts, Jo-Lynne!

    1. Yeah, I tend to not wear necklaces with cowl necks because I feel like it’s busy, but when I see people wearing a long pendant with them, I always think it looks nice. LOL!! I do sometimes, but often I go without. I’m a plain jane, what can I say? LOL!

You’d have to try the merlot jacket with the green jeans – I think it depends on the shade of each and what you’re wearing with them. Maybe try a scarf to bring the two colors together?

  27. Love all these looks. I know you’re a heel wearing girl and they look great on you. I just can’t do them. I’m 5’9″ and tower over people when I do and they’re just not my everyday look. Thank you for the point about balancing out the tunic – I’ve never thought about that before so I’ll keep that in mind when choosing outfits.

  28. Thanks for this post, I just bought a bunch of new colored skinny jeans at Kohl’s and one pair is called Pine Ridge. I got plum ones, too. Another color I got, and have seen a lot of is a sort of terra cotta color. Have you noticed that trend? I even saw it in summer clothes, which I found interesting, since it looks fallish to me.
